Ok, so I had to get to the fights on ESPN(Stevenson-Herring) after the game last night. So some quick early morning thoughts on the victory over NCState....
- The end of the first half -- on both offense and defense -- was mind-boggling to me. No urgency when we had the ball, then we have a defensive break down and call a TO(when the Pack had none) that helped them re-set their offense for what would be a TD. Announcer at the national level hate to really be critical of coaches, but I give Golic Jr credit, he flat out called that stuff out. It was THAT bad
That was world-class corching
Honestly, for an 'analytics guy', you dont expect stuff like this to happen.
- Again, young players flashed a lot. James Williams is a real talent. He should never come off the field, I'll live with his mistakes
- Rooster needs at least 15-20 touches of some sort every game. And not with inside runs, that's not his game and quite frankly, we dont block well upfront. But get him down the seam, into the flat, quick tosses, screens, jet screens, end-arounds -- things of that nature. He brings an electricity to this offense. But with that said, all that grinding stuff up the middle, let Cody Brown and Thad Frankling get some burn in these roles
But I'll say it again, Knighton should be the foundation of this offense.
- Where is Brashard Smith? Again, IMO, we are playing with fire when you sit some obviously talented players in the era of the transfer portal
- I thought we played pretty physical upfront defensively. Overall, the tackling was better. But lets be honest, Devin Carter (88) for NCState should be investigated for point shaving. He helped out a LOT. Two really huge drops last night
- TVD had another strong game, he can play. Not sure if he's a perfect fit for what Lashlee wants, but the kid delivered, and seems to be getting better. I think the TVD vs Jake battle next spring will be very interesting.
- OK, now some will point to this as a defense of Manny Diaz, that hey, this is a good team. That if not for a play here or there, or a kick that goes a few inches to the other side, that they are 3-0 in ACC play. Alright, I look at it differently, that with better coaching and leadership, those games are more definitive wins, or wins bottom line. To me, this doesn't lower the temperature on his hot seat. Bottom line, these are games he is supposed to win
Diaz can't have it both ways. Say that he has a good football team in his lockerroom(which I agree with for the most part) and then have a losing record while in the ACC Coasta.
Now, we go into Pitt. And if they are reasonably healthy (I know they had some key playmakers knocked out vs Clemson yesterday) the Panthers are a team we will have issues with. And now they have some real momentum and confidence, and we never react well in weather below 80 degrees.
Lets see what happens there
