Let’s summarize. One poster says if we can’t win Coastal then Diaz may not be who we think he is. Another poster says if we don’t win coastal then Enos may not be who we think it is. Typical responses by “entitled” Canes fans who pull trigger if THEY feel team, coaches and players not performing up to THEIR standards. How did Jimmy Johnson do in his first year hear?
As someone who wasn’t even alive in 1984, let’s get something straight here about Jimmy Johnson’s first season at UM: that schedule was beyond insane. He wasn’t losing to the mediocre — and that’s being generous — coastal division opponents we’ll see this year.
Let’s dive deeper into 1984. We played 3 top 25 teams in 12 ******* days. Open up the year against #1 Auburn and Bo Jackson; then, five days later, you go play at a top 20 team in UF. You win both those games, but you don’t even get a breather because you have to go on the road to play a ranked Michigan team. A game we definitely dropped because we were emotionally and physically exhausted.
A couple weeks later, you get destroyed by a ranked FSU team, which there is no excuse for, but it’s still murderers row as far as scheduling is concerned.
To finish the season, you choke away a 38 point lead to a Maryland team that finishes the season in the top 15. And then, you lose the following week on a Hail Mary to a 10 win and #5 ranked Boston College team. You then play in tough bowl game against #10 ranked UCLA and drop a nail biter.
Even with all the close losses against (except FSU) very talented teams, you can boast that you beat a UF team that finished the season ranked #3 and an Auburn team that finished #14. We also beat a ranked Notre Dame team that year.
Now, take a look at the pathetic joke of a schedule we have this year. Diaz may see three ranked teams all year — if he’s lucky — so comparing it to Johnson’s 1984 season is apples to oranges. Again, I wasn’t alive at the time, so if the older guys on the board want to point out innacuracies or something I missed, I would appreciate it.
