Update: PJ is apparently going to Boston College. King walked away from Houston and is supposedly visiting UM.

I figured it'd be a good time to take a quick look at the stats of some of the players being discussed on the board. Obviously, there are many other variables that stats can not account for, e.g., character, level of competition, mental toughness, maturity, coaching, compatible offensive system, etc., but past performance is often a good predictor of future performance and there is no question that today's college football requires elite QB play to win a national championship.

Here are stats for D'Eriq King. I've included both his high school and college stats so you can track his production over time.

By comparison, no QB currently on our roster and no other QB who we are currently looking at in the portal has D'Eriq's production in high school as both a passer and runner.

In high school, D'Eriq King threw for 8719 yards, completed 66.3 percent of his passes, and he threw for 126 TDs. He also rushed for 2709 yards and 37 more TDs. Playing part of the season in 2019, King took a step back probably because of changes in the composition of the roster and staff at Houston. Below his stats are tabulated.

If we are going to compete for national titles, we must have an innovative OC who can also recruit an elite QB. D'Eriq would be a step in the right direction, but ultimately we need to bring in top or near top of their class QBs year after year just as Alabama, Clemson, Ohio States, etc. do.

Does TVD have a chance to be good, or even a starter here? Does he have the skillset to run the spread?

Indeed he does, but his numbers do not look like PJ's or D'Eriq King's. I actually thought he would be closer in comparison to Sam Howell at UNC. I have their stats as well.

HS stats are not relevant when discussing grad transfers.

They are when you only have a small sample size for the player at the college level. So you don't think LSU considered that Joe Burrow had thrown for 11,416 yards, completed 69% of his passes, and 157 passing TDs while in high school when making their decision?

Appreciate the effort, but looking back on HS stats 3-4 years after the fact is an act of futility.

Jurkovec is expected to go to Boston College. A Transfer QB that has to sit a year is not what Lashlee is looking for either

Didn't realize he was headed to Boston College. The post is really about looking at the numbers in comparative perspective. We need QBs who come to us with better stats to begin with and again, if, we could have gotten them, their numbers reflect those of the caliber of player we would want.

A question was raised about TVD's numbers. Here they are. They are clearly stronger his final two years, and he got much better in his senior year, which is a good sign.

What are Tate Martell numbers? Don't think these numbers are everything though odds def better for success if in the right system.

@coffeecane here are Tate's numbers. He threw for 7507 yards and completed 60.4% of his passes. He also rushed for almost 2300 yards.

This are from MaxPrep. I use a spreadsheet to do a quick check for the accuracy of the totals.

Thanks for this. Those are nice numbers but didn't translate to college (at least in Enos system). Anyway just goes to show it really doesn't matter what your HS stats are. I think competition and system mean more.
