Butch On 790 Last Night

All I'm saying: Flowers is a nice little tackle, McKinnie was a transcendent talent.

sack rate is not 100% attributed to the O line quality either though, a lot of that lies in the quarterback and his ability to move, or how long he holds the ball. see: alabama having a higher sack rate.

If anything, I think we were even better in pass protection than the sack rate reflects. Morris wasn't exactly Peyton Manning in the pocket, and we ran a lot of long-developing pass plays.

I agree with those saying we could have been better on the OL. That was a unit with elite talent and good (but not great) results. But to say they have been holding us back is an overstatement. Truthfully, I attribute a lot of their inconsistency (especially in the running game) to playcalling.

Our offensive line has been the least of our problems.

Our sack percentage over the past two years has been very solid (31st and 32nd, higher than Alabama and Wisconsin). Our yards per rush attempt has been a little above average nationally (48th and 51st), and it's been elite when Duke has been running the ball. Our rushing yards per game are in the lower half, but that has more to do with the playcalling. It has not been a Top 10 unit or anything like that, but easily one of the better groups in the conference.

The two inexperienced starters on the right side had a rough first game in Louisville, but the real problem was numbers. We did not adjust to Louisville stacking the box.

of those stats, yards per rush is really the only good indicator. and that is not very impressive, that is middle of the pack.

we obviously don't have a total **** o line, but it has been over valued when the the weakness of the unit has seemed glaring. that is across the board too, we have people here talking about flowers as a high first round pick at times. the dude isn't even all conference as of yet.
It's also tough for an OL to look great in a basic trash predictable system like ours. Everything is inextricably intertwined. That's why parsing out this abortion that is UM football by individual units is useless.

I love it...Butch is sitting in the background waiting and just prodding Folden through the media. THAT'S MY COACH RIGHT THERE!

Great interview overall, but one thing that really stuck out were his comments about the offensive line.

Butch said he always had talented skill position players at Miami, and that was never an issue. But what brought them to the next level, and what he believes turns an 8-9 win team into a title contender is the offensive line.

He said it wasn't until they got Bibla, McKinnie, Romberg, Sherko and Joaquin all next to each other and rolling that they made the leap into a great team. You have to be able to control games, the clock, and dominate with your OL, or you'll never be great.

We all knew it starts in the 'trenches, guysm!?!' But it was cool to hear his thoughts, and also disturbing because as he was talking, I had flashbacks of Gadbois and Isadora getting thrown 15 yards backwards.

Getting thrown 15 yards backwards? Whoa the guy was past them before they ever got out of their stance.
