It turns out that for decades - prior to Butch arriving - all student athletes - and regular students - had crip courses they could take to increase their GPA - again - all students could take these courses, and student athletes were able to take advantage of them as well.

Butch was hired as the football coach - he wasn't involved in the academic portion of coursework or who chose what courses were appropriate - or if the instructor was qualified to teach the courses. That was all admin - and in no way the responsibility of the football program.

UNC gets busted for providing crip courses. To avoid NCAA sanctions - they up and fire Butch - and he didn't even know what the **** they were talking about. Academic advisors worked to provide a full course load - and he logically assumed it was all legit.

So they fired Butch - and later - the AD, the President of UNC - and others stated clearly that they did Butch dirty. That they never should have fired him - as he didn't have anything to do with the decisions and practices the University put in motion decades prior.

He'd built up a pretty good team - and now of course - several were prohibited from playing some games, and others were pretty much dismissed. That year - they were expecting with great confidence to win the conference. Butch's teams just get better and better and better.

In spite of losing several players - he still managed to win his bowl game.

I know all this - as a good friend was involved at UNC and couldn't believe that they fired Butch for THEIR crap.

You guys realize Butch went 3-1 against us. Like he beat us with a 4 win team. He really did have UNC on the verge of being really good. Maybe he wouldn’t get us there, but with his current success and our current state of ineptitude it’s pretty damning.
Honestly I can’t wait to see what he turns that program into in a few more seasons because he does have a legit eye for talent.
I’m not a BBB guy, but right now I am an anyone but what we have guy. I think this is the worst it’s been since the expectations were so high. It’s even destroying our recruiting faster than in previous regimes. It’s kind of scary what this roster could look like if a few kids leave early and transfer. It could easily become a 3-4 win team.

Actually that’s exactly why I don’t want butch. I want a coach who’s gonna win more than 9 games a season and not get blown out by Wisconsin...or in Butch’s case ECU, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, West Virgina, UCLA, Virginia Tech, Arizona State, and Washington.


I also don’t feel like being 1-3 through the first 4 games or 2-3 through the first 5. Butch has done that twice.

I'd rather go young but let's pretend butch was hired...I have no doubt that his predecessor would already be on his staff. Davis surrounds himself with good people and I have no doubt he would assemble a great staff.

I understand the "fascination" with coaches who do well at smaller programs - and turn them around - but I also see that frequently, those who want to move up to a top tier level of football - find themselves in over their heads.

Once in a while it works - but often - it doesn't go nearly as smoothly or nearly as quickly as one assumes it would be.

Some coaches burn it at a school, go to another for big bucks - and just can't quite get everything working like before. There is a long list of this.

We had some burner coaches at UM, but Schnellenberger couldn't do it elsewhere, JJ could do it all, Erickson couldn't, Butch was doing it elsewhere until the UNC sacrificed him, but no one since.

That's why Howard said Cinderella never got back to the Ball, and that's why Butch would give anything to return to UM. He knows exactly what he could do here - he KNOWS.

Am I supposed to be impressed with butch for 9 wins at year 2? Richt got 10 in year 2...and he also topped him in year 3 7-6 > 5-6.

If Butch Davis had the same money - I think I heard we had $1.5 mil for our Coordinators - Ho Li Blazing Blisters! Yeah, he'd make his hires - and again - Butch knows that the foundation of a great program is Personnel - players and coaches.

Nobody cares. Butch lost to inferior opponents EVERY YEAR with superior talent just like Richt does but here you are telling me I need to hire the same problem I’m trying to get rid of. I’m guessing you love sulking in mediocrity.

Butch's first year here was no bowl due to probation. First year! But Dunning-Krugers will pretend the worse non-death penalty sanctions had no effect on UM. It's a heck of an affliction :)

What was his excuse in ‘99 then? What was his excuse in ‘00?

What was his excuse in ‘09 what he had a multitude of talent at UNC and probably the most talented team in the ACC and maybe college football?
 
Where Butch beats most is at talent evaluation. With him now, we wouldn’t beat Saban and Dabo for all of these 5 star kids, where we would beat them tho, is on the field, when those 3-4’s developed. What Butch knew, more than anything else, was WHO to recruit. Stars be damned.
As far as Richt’s recruiting is concerned. I’m beginning to see that CMR can’t recruit without UGA’s bag men behind him. He was known as a top notch recruiter at UGA, and now he’s struggling trying to get top flight kids to stay home. He got a decent amount of top flight kids from So. Fla when he was at UGA. Now he’s the HC at the U, and all of a sudden, he can’t recruit no more? Wait.... Did I just see CMR retired?! WTF?!
