BREAKING: Tennessee officials discussing football coach Butch Jones’ immediate future
By Mike Griffith

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — University of Tennessee officials are discussing Butch Jones’ immediate future as coach of the Vols on Sunday afternoon, according to sources close to the program.

Tennessee (3-5, 0-5 SEC) has lost four consecutive games, including a 29-26 defeat at Kentucky that registers as the program’s second loss in the past 33 years to the Wildcats.

Jones told the media Saturday night he was “absolutely” certain that first-year Vols athletic director John Currie would support him the remainder of the season, but it appears that might not be the case.

SEC Country reported last week that Jones likely would need to win the rest of the games in the regular season to be retained, starting with the Kentucky game.

Florida reportedly decided to part ways with coach Jim McElwain on Sunday, a day after the Gators’ 42-7 setback to rival Georgia. Tennessee fans, meanwhile, have been vocal about their displeasure with Jones this season, to the point of frequently calling and emailing Currie.

Jones normally meets with the media on Monday at noon, but plans for this week have not yet been announced by the school. Tennessee has five coaches on Jones’ staff who have been been head coached in a full-time or interim basis.

With a December 1 early signing period, the firing/hiring period of head coaches is dramatically shortened. Expect a number of schools to fire their head coaches this week. Nebraska, Arkansas, etc.

Not sure if it’s still true but a couple of years ago Tennessee had the highest recruiting budget in the country (bags not counted)

Early signing period starts Dec 20 but your right it will shorten the cycle.

I think Auburn, Tennessee, TAM, Nebraska, UCLA, Arkansas will all come open this year. Ufag will have plenty of competition for head coaches.

I wonder if Manny gets a look from one of these schools?

Manny quite always from being named a head coach at P5 school. Defense to undisiciploned everywhere he been and owes Richt a big favor bringing him to Miami.

I keep hearing the talking heads mentioning Auburn as possibly opening up.
I don't get this one.
Isn't Malzahn doing a good job there?

Problem is they still cant talk to other coaches before the end of the season. They can use agents and intermediaries, but hiring still takes time, interviews and homework.

Who was that one kid with the giant belly button that spurned us for Tenn? Does he play? His Twitter was something fuzzydildomuffin or something like that

If they finish 8-4 this year I don't know how he will have any support left among the fan base, esp. ones with inferiority complex such as Auburn fans. I think he has to beat Alabama this year at minimum to keep his job and that will be a tall task.

Yeah, heard similar on that goodball Sirius College Football show with that chick who is an Auburn grad.
She claims Malzahn is not safe if he doesn't beat one of UGA or Alabama.
Auburn fans are out of their mind if this is true.
He's done a pretty good job this season.
Some good coaches on his staff too.

Al Golden Jr will be fired and Scott will be given the boot. What a great OC Larry Scott turned out to be. NOT!

Too many loses to their chief rivals in the SEC.

The fans would probably be ok if Gus could split with Bama, UGA, and LSU. But if he loses to UGA and Bama to end this season, that’s 0-3 for 2017 and 1-8 over the past 3 seasons ... With that one win requiring a play review to overturn a call to end the game against LSU, or that would have been a loss.

Your correct my buddy is an Auburn alum and follows college fb closer than anyone I know and Malzahn has worn out his stay. They're fanbase doesn't care for him anymore

That is a lot of big name jobs open, plus the jobs that open up when HCs leave to take each one. Lot of movement this year. We need to keep winning and cash in on the recruiting advantage this year. Mark needs to dust off his best St Bobby impersonation and rob himself a bunch of top studs on the signing days -- early and regular. This can be dynasty building year -- if we keep winning.
