There is no denying that Butch Davis like all one hit wonders caught lighting in a bottle and built the greatest team in the history of CFB.

However his cult status following here is wildly misrepresented at best he’s 4th on the pantheon of great coaches at the U and doesn’t even make the pantheon of greatest coaches in CFB history.

Misrepresented? Lightning in a bottle?

Maybe - but Butch Davis sure ****es a lot of folks off - and that's the entire purpose of the exercise!

Was he Lightening in a Bottle when HE closed on the Majority of UM kids from 84-88??...
Ask JJ bout Butch, as I did in Islamorado in 97 on vacation with wifey over lunch...Lol...
This site wouldn't even exist without him...

As I recollect, Jimmy let Butch pull out on Thursdays to go evaluate and recruit. Jimmy certainly had input - but Butch was the farmer bringing in the harvest.

So. He recruited JJ's teams. When JJ left - Erickson was able to play the recruits Butch put together - and did pretty well.

Butch went with JJ and won a Super Bowl, stayed after JJ left - and won another.

Returned to a broke-*** team at UM, and as he rebuilt it - put together the greatest college football team of all time. EVER!

you seem pretty in tune with canes history, did you play or coach in some capacity ? just curious. go canes

Miami should win 100 out of 100 games vs FIU. Butch being 1-1 vs Miami is an achievement.

Although I blame Manny for the loss more than I credit Butch for it.

There are tons of top teams that have lost to teams they should be 100 out of 100 times. It happens. In fact we needed it to happen to help get rid of Enos. So in a way it might have worked out.

Miami would be a better program today had they rehired Butch instead hiring Richt. They might not be competing with Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, LSU, and Alabama for NCs but I doubt 2019 would have ended 6-7 and a 14-0 loss to Louisiana Tech in a garbage bowl game.

I am looking forward to this season and hope the change to a spread offense is the spark leading to a resurgence of Miami Hurricanes football.

Used us as a stepping stone? You do realize UM wasn't exactly breaking the bank to keep him, right? We have always been on the cheap side, and we were not ever going to pay him what the Browns were offering. He took it, and I completely understand him doing so. Stepping stone... That's absurd. He took over a giant mess and rebuilt it into a monster, which was no easy task. He deserved a big pay day.
