Butch Davis' North Carolina Years

Here's something else to get excited about:

In Fedora's first year at UNC with Butch's players, he led UNC to their first winning ACC record since 2006 under John Bunting, and their first win vs NC St. since 2006 under John Bunting.

Actually, that was AFTER the team Butch had to work with, went though so much crap and suspensions.

Not exactly the same team.

WhatTheHell, who are your top choices for the job?

1. Mike Gundy
2. Dan Mullen
3. Butch Davis/Tom Herman - keep flipping back on forth on this

I end my list here because Butch is ours if we offer.

I like that list a lot. It's really hard to say what order. Maybe Herman 1, Gundy 2, Mullen 3.

I still have my dreams of reaching even higher. But thats a great list WTH

I do, too.

This list assumes we've already spent hours pitching guys like Gary Patterson, Mark Dantonio, Chip Kelly, Les Miles (if he's free) etc. After we've made the effort on more accomplished guys, I move on to this list of 4 I feel are a combination of realistic and talented. I don't even want to bother with other names I've heard because I have Butch over them, and if you make it down to Butch on your call list, the search will end there.

I have the exact same view of this search as you do. Hopefully those that matter do as well. Cross your fingers.

Good post. And while the North Carolina years are relevant, what he did at Miami is much more relevant to what he would do at Miami.

You're right. But the point people fail to see is Butch built a national championship caliber squad at UNC. People can say whatever about Davis' 2010 season, but I can't deny the fact that that team was on schedule for a break out year. Before the NCAA came knocking on the door and gutted the defense, people were talking about UNC as a potential national champion. UNC!!.

Here's another stat on his royal highness Butch Davis: 0-3 vs Al Groh while at UNC.

Combined 0-7 vs Tom O'Brien and Al Groh.

"I have consistently had Butch as a top 4 candidate, check my porst history." FOH, you have overtaken Chise as #1 Butch hater.

Butch hater? I think Butch is the GOAT. It's a travesty he hasn't been inducted into the HoF, ring of honor, and the Hollywood walk of fame.

The guy walks on water and would easily win a NC with Miami next season if hired. Just like he did in 83, 87, 89, 91, and 01.

His 2010 UNC team had 9 guys drafted and he showed with his 4-4 ACC record that season he can contend for the ACC CG.

I'm with you until Miles. If we're going in that route, I rather roll the dice with Herman.

This.

Why do the slurpers get to give Butch a pass on the most recent part of his career but other coaches are chastised for theirs?

There is no way to slice the UNC years as good.

He had time and had no winning records in the ACC. None.

Butch needs Miami to win. The talent in Miami allows great recruiters and developers to win it all. Its that simple.

Dont feed me BS why Al and Onion were great recruiters because they were horrible in SFL getting enough absolute difference makers, creating depth and filling dire needs.

You are trying way too hard and falling all over yourself. You're playing with cheap stats that even the biggest anti Butch person can see through it. If you tried to be reasonable about your statement, people might actually take you seriously.

Let me ask you, if Harbaugh had the same suspensions in year 4, what do you think his overall record would have been at Standford? Butch had a better first 3 year record than Harbaugh did.

Mike Gundy is a born and bred Oklahoma State Cowboy. Former quarterback there, started his coaching career there and has been a coach there for 21 years.

You think we pulling this guy away from there? His wife and kids will love making a life change to come down to Miami and dealing with us. Not buying that this is even a remote possibility.

I know he would have a winning record. Also how long do you think Harbaugh would be looking for a job? I am thinking it would be in the tune of minutes and not years.

I think what Butch has done at both programs talent wise is remarkable! Even what he did in Cleveland was awesome! What I don't get is why hasn't any other program come after him? Even another NFL team?

Again with the context. You answered the first part of the question with winning record, which in case you didn't realize, Butch had a winning record, even with the suspensions.

You then answered the second part of the question as if there were no investigations. If Butch had no investigations, he would only be looking for minutes also. If Harbaugh had the same investigation, he would be waiting awhile for a job just like Butch. How is Jim tressel doing as a college head coach right now? Oh that's right, he's not.

You guys are going out of your way to avoid the context like it was a plague, because your entire argument is over. There is one legit argument against Butch and that is year 3 at unc. he should have done more. Oh well, sometimes we don't hit the mark, but based on history, Butch has hit more than miss (of course only if you account for context)
