Been a fan since watching my first NFL game - the 1971 Super Bowl when they lost to the Cowboys. I cut my teeth on those 70's squads and, even to an extent, the early 80's teams and you are 100% on point that the incompetence over the couple of DECADES is way beyond "old". Their front office/player decisions have been awful. When I started watching the NFL, we only had the Phins and I also have too much time invested!

did i say Ke or Kobe over him?. Naw just said there isnt some huge gap of outstanding plays that he has/had over them last szn. Thats for sure.

I mean i would like to have my safeties have some turnovers...if were calling them elite. He doesnt get more than 2 ints a year.

He's a high iq guy (coaches kid) you can move around and wont kill you at any position.

He got the hype from Nick Saban because he came in and started as a freshman. And from then on he just got labeled as the best db in america.

Derwin James got the same thing at FSU and that sort of continued int he NFL to this day

my college teammate my freshman yr in college transferred to our team from Iowa.

Think he was in that class with Bob Sanders or the year after and said the hardest he ever got hit in his life was from Bob Sanders. And my teammate was about a 6'1 195-205 pd wr not a small guy at all. lol

Everything when brought up about him is things that arent from a production level...

Saban would of loved Bryce Fitzgeralds ball hawkin *** as well cause his dbs started to be toast around that time lol

Ill take Caleb Downs on my team every day of the week.... BUt when you say ELITE safety play...and ive been a fan of the Miami Hurricanes my whole life i know how that looks and where he would fall in reference to that type of player.

This is a lazy take tho, saban got top dbs every year and we didn’t hear about all of them like this. The ones who are elite are the ones we hear about, he left saban and had his best years. Idk why yall think everyone is just giving him the best db label lol he earned it

And i have no idea why yall keep pointing to derwin as the reference when he has been elite in the league when healthy. He is more similar to branch to me but better

I think in general, people just dont value the "box safeties" who dont turn the ball over.. Dont consider them elite if they not in coverage even if they are highly valued (NFL dont pay people even if they valued lol and Derwin is one of highly paid in league)

I think Downs is overrated by media because of the teams he played for buttt coaches love him also which when you watch the tape, he just doesnt make many mistakes at all, coaches LOOOOVE that lol.. But he not making splash plays so he seem ho hum.. I would never draft a in box safety that high tho, I remember reading some study on roster build for super bowl teams and wasting 1st round, especially that high on safety just seems dumb. Which I think where the overrated comes from..

The thing is I AGREE with the assessment on box safeties. I always thought ed reed was light years better than troy for that reason, thought earl thomas was best player on the legion of boom Seahawks.

This is where i think there is some misconceptions with downs, he is elite in coverage too and makes splash plays. People see low turnovers and automatically think well this is just a safe no mistake player that coaches love and thats just not the full truth

As far as where he got drafted, alot of people think he slipped because alot of people thought he was the best player in the draft. He slipped because of positional value, but they desperately needed secondary help.

I actually don’t disagree with people saying he’s overrated because of his position in a team building sense. But in this modern nfl with so much chess matches being played with personnel matchups having a guy like him is super valuable so i can understand a reach. But just jumping to no turnovers and thinking ke & jakobe are close is insane to me.

hes overrated bro...and was overrated because of what saban said because of exactly what you just stated ..."saban doesnt talk about them like this".

Im pointing to Derwin James because its similar to him as well....Jack of all trades guy, playing all over the field, on avg likely finishes a season with 2-3 ints and a good amount of tackles. I also think Derwin James is better player coming out than him too as he is more athletic and got him by maybe 2-3 inches in height..

Excuse me for being a UM fan and having to watch Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Blades play and know what elite safety play looks like to what good safety play looks like.

Yall throw around "elite" to much...its similar to "GOAT" HAVE THIS GENERATION SAYING this one is GOATED, blah, blah when goat means GREATEST OF ALL TIMES......I havent forgave Xavier Restrepo for saying an fsu bum *** wr was "goated" for making a game winning td catch on a busted coverage.

GOATED, GENERATIONAL, ELITE all over used terms int his generation.

On the bolded is what i got at....if my Dolphins drafted Downs i was about to be ****ed....and we have a severe safety need!!.

Off the top 10 nfl safeties i think only Kyle Hamilton n derwin were drafted in the first...they all gonna be second rd or third.
