No sour grapes or weird homerism but I’d watch a lot of OSU games and he was just never a guy that you went “wow game changer”

It’s not all about turnovers like was being discussed but I dunno…he just didn’t pop off the screen to me very often. Smart very good football player though for sure just rode that freshman hype a bit imo is all

Yup. Same. He's definitely overrated but none of us are saying he's not a good player. I suspect he will have a decent NFL career but get exposed a bit by NFL wr

Yeah insane vertical jump too. He was pretty short and had no real offers in high school went to Iowa from a coaching connection.

super nice quiet kind of guy but killer on the field type. He was getting the start as a freshman at Iowa and he said Ricky Williams was talking a lot of **** (Texas Tech RW). He hit that kid so hard so many times he tapped out and left the game

Anyway…cool story right…
 
I'll add...both our guys had a better game than Downs. Keionte we all know won the game. Jacobe had that entire OSU offense looking for him. He had Tate basically running to the locker room and tapping out.

What I don't know is if our guys are that good or was it more our DC is both genius and insane. I think it's mostly the latter.

I am all for slandering Ohio State, but Caleb Downs was essentially a defensive coordinator on the field for Patricia and his presence allowed them to do coverages that they would not have been able to deal without him and his football IQ - people are underestimating what he did because it wasn’t just purely in the stats
 
Downs was good, not elite. No way he should have been drafted over Bain. Thinking we will look back 3-4 years from now and Downs should have been a late 1st/early 2nd rd pick.

I thought Downs was really good, at least against us. I refuse to watch OSU otherwise (unless they are down by 7+ points in the last few minutes of a game). But I don’t think Downs was drafted too high as much as Bain was just drafted too low. Everyone above Tampa in the draft might be questioning their scouting department in a few years just as the Ravens made a lot of teams look stupid for where they were able to select Ed Reed.

I’m still disgusted that Arvell “no show” Reese was drafted ahead of Bain.

Jakobe always got a ton of love here so I won’t pretend like he was unheralded or anything

But when Scott got hurt, Thomas jumped into his spot and we barely skipped a beat

I’m hoping Thornton can fill that void because Thomas was incredible last year

He’s more a linebacker. He’s not a Derwin James (if we use a non Cane I hate) type

He made a 17 year old fumble a couple times though

Itll sound like homerism if I keep going but Keionte Scott was more impactful than Downs last year

Reading your other comments though yeah he’s a guy you take that has almost no downside. He will play Day 1 I think. I wouldn’t say that I would take Scott over him in the NFL draft context

Yea i disagree because he was great as a freshman at bama but he was way better at osu imo. The hype only grew, i don’t think he’s a generational type player like a eric berry or st. If he’s derwin level he is an elite player in the NFL, if healthy unlike derwin

As a giants fan, it was very telling when Harbaugh passed on Downs. Harbaugh knows his safeties, so he would have been picked if he thought Downs was a generational prospect. The giants have probably the worst secondary in the league, so it was a huge need. I'm glad we went with the 10+ year guaranteed starting lineman
