Bring Back Butch?

Tell me why it's impossible for the best evaluator in the history of the game to build another incredible roster.

Don't just tell me it's impossible trying to be the faqqy contrarian; tell me why it's impossible. Do you think he got lucky last time and followed that up by getting lucky again at UNC building the most talented roster they've ever had?

The man has a clear gift. If anything, it'll be easier to do it again because this time he'll have the benefit of busting out for recruits a giant portfolio of 1st rounders, NFL All-pros and even some HOF'ers that he produced. He didn't have that portfolio the last time he did it.

Nothing lucky about what he did the first time around, I'm just looking at it purely as "can he really do it again"? I think that answer is no, due to the fact he did it perfect the first time around. Whether you think that answer is yes, just play along. If he doesn't have the talent, is he going to drum up a flawless game day strategy and win with lesser playmakers?

The stench of Golden is so heavy that we're going to have to prove to recruits that we're back not by talking a big game, but by winning the big games. Does a Tom Herman drum up the right game plan and win those big games quicker than Butch?

While I see your point, I think you are ignoring some key facts. Coaches may get old but their ability to evaluate talent typically does not. What he did both at UM and at UNC make him a clear cut #1 choice, especially given UM's coaches salary limitations. Butch can be had on the cheap.

Sincerely,

Cane Dynasty

He doesn't have to recreate the 2001 team. He's going to recruit this area well. We're going to get our share of local talent. He will have assistants that will develop the talent and his teams will not beat themselves. He may not out scheme you to death but his teams are disciplined. We will be in the mix every year.

I think this negates everything that I bring up about Butch. Given our vanilla wafer soft schedule, he'll get us to an ACC championship game year in and year out.

Butch doesn't need to recreate the 01 team. You can win a title without being as good as the 01 Canes, considering every title-winning team of the last 14 years hasn't been as good as the 01 Canes. Butch will identify and get talent from SoFla, his teams will be disciplined, and he won't coach timid and afraid. I'm not saying he's the only choice, but he deserves to be on the short list.

Another thing Butch did was assemble one of the greatest staffs in history.

Three NFL head coaches (Schiano, Pagano, Chud), multiple college head coaches (Curtis Johnson, Mark Stoops, Shannon, Coker, Cristobal) and two UM legends (Soldinger and Kehoe).

I like the way of putting that....what coaching candidate would scare FSU and UF the most? It's a good question

I guess Butch is up there

Firing Day is 53 away.

However, Butch might be coming in ahead of schedule, while we impatiently wait.

When driving south, to Miami, on I-95, we've always had Arturo Sandoval's Hot House CD, at the ready; to be played upon sighting of the first palm tree.

Why is there even talks of a new coach when the current coach is still there? If he is going to be fired why keep him around and not fire him already? I am skeptical there is actually any talk of getting a new coach until we lose every game in October

Look at it this way: the minute Butch steps up to the podium and takes the job from Frenk, our only serious competition south of the I-4 Corridor will be Jimbo and the Gator. Butch will bring instant credibility for minimal cost. The High School coaching Mafia in Dade County know Butch, an they know the team's he built with their kids.

This is a no brainier.

The only problem is the sh*tty conference. As JJ pointed out in his interview; Miami was an Independent in the mid-Eighties, so a lot of their games were marquee matchups against ND, Oklahoma, etc. now that they are in a powder puff conference, it works against their ability to sell kids on marquee games.

He had carolina on the verge of being really good before the academic scandle. Alot of the players he recruited went to the nfl.

them boys flew to the football and has lsu on the ropes as in athlete for athlete, i memba watching that game and decided then that it wasnt miami it was butch.

He had like 11 starters suspended for that game and still almost beat a very good LSU team.

Great point, D. That's almost as important as his talent evaluation. If he puts together a young, hard charging, innovative staff, it's a wrap.

At the same time, for every pagano and schiano he had on his staff, he also had a Miller and a Coker (they were vilified on the boards back in the day).

Miller gets a bad rap but I'm pretty sure he went on to do good things after Butch relieved him of his duties. He just didn't have the best stint while at UM.
