Man you just missed the entire point. LOL
My point is this, you dont think that Richt can come in and consistently win 10 games a year at Miami? Because thats what he gives you. For me that is his value proposition; 10 wins a year and a major bowl. I dont see him running off 34 wins in a row.
I think Richt is capable of that but I have my concerns. He doesn't have the SEC and the great college gameday atmosphere to sell anymore. Also I'm concerned about his ability to address the foundational aspects of this program that need to be completely overhauled. I'm also concerned about the way his team's perform in big games. That and he's too squeaky clean. I want a coach that's going to unleash to potential savagery we can recruit here and terrorize the ACC.
Don't get me wrong. Im not saying that Richt is a bad coach. I think he's a good coach who is miles better than Golden. I just don't think he is the right guy for this program at this time. Let me put it another way. Richt would be a fantastic choice is he was following a guy like Butch.
Good points. What do you mean by foundational aspects of the program? S&C? Culture? I feel like Richt is more of a solid hire than a great one. But I dont think any of the guys at this point is a great hire.
Yes S&C and culture are definitely a big part of it. This is only my opinion but I think Butch would bring back a mental toughness that we haven't had here for a while. He has an eye for talent and he can develop it as well but we need to completely overhaul our strength and conditioning program and put the emphasis back on the OL and DL. Also Butch's practices are tough. We have been soft for years. I believe Butch fixes that in short order. I could also add fundamentals and attention to detail. I remember an interview Butch gave in 97. They asked him to describe exactly what he was doing to bring the program back. His answer was "I'm building foundations.".
Looking back on it I think that it is very clear that he did just that. I think it was more than him lucking out on a few HOF players. He created the culture that allowed those players to flourish. He laid down a foundation of hard work, discipline, leadership, accountability and attention to detail that allowed a career assistant like Larry Coker to literally put it on cruise control and go 35-3 with 2 title appearances, 1 national title and an Orange Bowl victory in a 3 year stretch. That and he got us to that point after having to deal with 31 scholarship losses with everyone in the country saying we would never be back. So yes, I give the guy a ton of credit for that.
Look, I know that Butch has his shortcomings. I don't see him as some X's and Oo's genius who is going to waltz in here, take a look at the roster, make a few changes and magically have us in the playoffs next year. There are a few rare coaches that are capable of that or something close to that and Davis isn't one of them. He wasn't blessed with the ability to engineer a quick fix. Davis is the kind of guy that is good at doing all the tedious thankless grunt work that people take for granted. My opinion on this entire matter is that I am confident we will get this from Davis. I'm not sure we will get that from Richt.. Shutters, nice windows, Italian tile, crown molding and state of the art appliances are great but they don't matter until the concrete is poured and dried, the frame is put up and the electrician does his thing. Like I said before this is just my take and I'm not saying that Richt is not a good coach nor am I attempting to belittle his accomplishments at UGA.
Excellent post..
