any idea what has changed here? Seemed like he was a FSU and we weren’t that interested.

Hurricanes may not be done when it comes to finding prospects who can get to the quarterback. One who has been as productive as any in that regard is Tampa (Fla.) Wharton Top247 EDGE Booker Pickett Jr.

As a junior, the Miami legacy totaled 30 sacks. That came one year after collecting 22 as a sophomore. Pickett is causing havoc in backfields as a senior as well, and that his ability to impact the quarterback has Jason Taylor and the Hurricanes excited this fall.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder is set to watch Miami play on Saturday as they host No. 23 Texas A&M, which will allow Pickett to be around his father’s alma mater for the first time since January.

There was a time where things were blurry from a Miami perspective as far as its pursuit of the Hillsborough County product. It’s clear now that mutual interest is picking up early in the college football season.

Touching base with 247Sports director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong, it does sound like if Miami makes a push, which is believed to be the case at this stage of the process, the Hurricanes could be tough to top.

- Cane legacy
- From Tampa
- Over 60 Sacks & 40+TFL's in 3 years as a starter
- Long armed, skinny kid but with room to grow
- Natural pass rusher

There's not much else to consider, even if you have concerns about his weight, just put the kid on that Feld Steroids... I mean "Weight gain" plan & see what happens.

You take a flyer on a kid like this every time, even if it doesn't work out both parties can remedy the situation with the Portal.

Andrew Ivins compares him to Chris Rumph Jr and here's his write up:

A dangly speed rusher that's full of juice. Racked up 60 sacks his first three years at the varsity level including 30 as a junior. Size hasn’t been verified in a while, but is believed to be over 6-foot-3 and carrying roughly 205 pounds. Obviously, will need to add some mass moving forward, but bloodlines suggest that shouldn’t be much of an issue as dad played defensive end at Miami while his uncle was an NFL defensive tackle. Terrorizes opposing offensive linemen (and quarterbacks) with an elite first step. However, isn’t one that just wins with his get-off as he’s already well-versed in a few different pass rushing moves and can swim/rip his way around the edge. Ability to dip and bend is extremely encouraging at this stage in his development. So is the fact that he understands backside pursuit and is constantly trying to produce negative plays. Biggest question moving forward will likely surround his future position/role. Seems destined to tack on muscle and settle in as a “Jack” linebacker in a 3-4 front, but might be able to eventually put his hand in the dirt and operate as a wide 9 in a 4-3 look depending on how his body fills out. Regardless, should be viewed as one of the top pass rushers in the 2024 cycle, and has the production to back that up. NFL upside.
