Bob Shoop to Miami

On describing his defensive philosophy to the fan base…

"What we are striving to have is more personnel-driven rather than scheme-driven. The unique thing here, there has been so much stability with this team with Coach (Dan) Mullen but also instability in regard to the defensive staff. The guys who are fifth-year players on this team, I am their fifth defensive coordinator, which is kind of strange. The guys who are fourth-year players, I'm their fourth defensive coordinator. Between Manny Diaz, Geoff Collins, Peter Sirmon and Coach (Todd) Grantham, it's kind of unusual. They have seen a lot of different schemes and a lot of different identities. Rather than recruit players to fit a scheme, you try to tailor your scheme to what your players can do. The analogy I used is LeBron James in basketball. What position does he play? Well he plays them all. If you have LeBron James on your team, you are going to utilize him in different ways than you might use a different player. What is non-negotiable, is we are going to be in your face. I truly believe in that. That is something that is important to me. We are built on relentless pursuit and never-ending pressure. That's what we talk about all the time. We fell short at times to that style of play at Tennessee. I don't think we were as consistent as I liked us to be. The things that are important to me are having the ability to stop the run and having the ability to eliminate chunk plays and having the ability to create takeaways. Be disruptive. Tackles for loss and sacks are something that's important to me. We must continuously be disruptive on the field. The phrase we have adopted on the defensive side of the ball is hunt. HTB – hunt the ball. We want to hunt the ball in everything we are doing. Thus far in the handful of weeks working with the guys, that's the mindset and the vision we have tried to create for those guys. I am looking forward to having that vision play out on the field this spring as we lay the foundation for this team."
Posted a piece of this in another thread, dude is like Manny twin.. Their philosophies are very much aligned. Crazy ho wboth had elite defenses in 2018. MSU allowed 12 TDs that year in 12 games, 3 to bama alone, which means in other 11 games only allowed 9 (we allowed 8 TDs to unc), SHEESH

They absolutely can be on the field. Bama analysts are on the sidelines every game.

Yep. They aren't supposed to actively coach during gamedays, and are supposed to have minimal contact with players, but that's actually become the biggest joke in college football.

Remember reading an interview with some Bama players after Sark replaced Kiffin where they said the switch wasn't a big deal because they had gotten to know Sark well because he coached them every day....this from an analyst role.

Breaking rules involving both the analyst role and the hours limitations on 'coaching' are how the big boys have been doing it now for a decade.

Funny how Diaz felt LB was easiest position to recruit and evaluate and he ******* sucks at it, lol.. wtf

Seems to be near identical defense. SIAP

@Coach Macho what's your view on the move + a potential LB hire
I freakin' love this move!
Older, experienced, somewhat proven defensive coach with expertise in the secondary.

I'm waiting on this LB hire. I'm hoping it's a strong recruiter.
I'm just glad to finally have a staff that's NOT filled with Manny's boys.

Yeah I just don't understand why we don't make him DC and let him call plays? I understand he's not a good Recruiter but maybe we can hire him as DC and then hire T Will as LB Coach?

Only room for one more onfield coach unless Patke goes to an analyst role.

If we make him a position coach, we'd null his payout from Michigan. Its cheaper to bring him as an analyst because he still gets his payout, and we can keep him employed and making more. Its why Saban always hires fired guys to be analyst for him. Cheaper, less stress for the individual, and experienced thoughts around.

Shoop has jumped around a lot. Was sued by PSU for breech of contract when he abandoned ship for Tennessee. In and out at Michigan. Interesting move.

rob likens is in there too... this made my heart happy when asked who the best player he ever faced was...

Likens: [Former Miami safety] Sean Taylor. When I was at Temple, he was at Miami, and he had my receivers scared to death.

Sorry I just popped in to the thread here. But what the **** is Manny boy doing hiring so called analysts on the staff? It goes without saying that only Bama is allowed to do something like this. Next time, please let me know when the rules change so I don't look lost when good things happen around here.

I like the hire just based off the video that keeps popping up every thread. I would Salt the **** out of Pepa!

So how do Shoop, Diaz, Reed divide up responsibilities? That's a lot of chiefs with no direct accountability. I hope there's a plan to name a coordinator sometime soon.

WTF this means.

Diaz is the Head coach, Reed an off field adviser and Shoop is an analyst.

it’s pretty clear who the chief is.
So who's accountable if the defense sucks again next year? That's when Diaz will finally hire a competent DC, he'll buy himself another year, and everyone on CIS will crown him again as an offseason deity.

You.

We are gonna blame you, sorry.
A useful reminder not to post. Maybe someone else who is capable of reason, an insider perhaps, can comment on wether there’s a plan to hire a DC. If not, no worries. Carry on.

Your question has no sense.

Manny Diaz is the HC and he will be responsible for the good and the bad whether if he hires a DC or not.
