Bill OBrien

College and more specifically, Miami, is a different game. The value of transitive properties doesn't work with him being a successful NFL coach and being a CFB coach. He might be good, but we need more of sure thing in our next hire and I don't think Bill is as much of a sure thing as Mark Stoops, Schiano, Mario, Lane, etc.
I hear what you saying but historically Miamihas thrived with former NFL coaches taking the reigns like Butch Davis, i just think as a fan base we are sleeping on how good bill O’Brien would be for us or even a Coordinator from the NFL

Has there been any chatter about O'Brien's interest in coaching the Canes?

I’ve defended him a lot in this thread and just to clear some air… I agree with all of this. All valid concerns.

I do think he’s a good coach and is capable of running a program though. We would not be in bad shape under BOB. But how quickly does he go 9-3 or 10-2 and bolt for the NFL?
Honestly, I think his timeline at PSU would be a great indicator, if he went 8-4 and 9-3 the next 2 years, and had a HC offer from the NFL he would be gone.
I also believe that Miami is not a final destination job for the majority of coaches, our history would indicate that at least, but maybe our admin would pony up to keep our next successful HC.

I have a senior contact at PSU.....he gives Obrien very high marks for his coaching, not so much for his personality/interest in recruiting. He also follows the Canes and thinks we could do a lot worse than him, especially if he has been humbled by his Houston experience.
That’s sounds about right. He also went at it with the athletic department to get more investment in the facilities. He was supposedly promised things when taking over that never came…..although they did later once Franklin signed on.

Name to watch. Guy can coach an offense. They have 5 stars all over but his offense stretches the field and he uses all his weapons. Also brings HC experience from college and NFL. Would be in my top 4.
You realize O'Brien was hired on January 21, 2021 and he wasn't responsible for any of the recruits on the team or signing a few days later. O'Brien was 2-4 in the NFL Playoffs, 4 games over .500 at Houston (52-48) and never won more than 8 games at Penn State in his two years. He would be disaster at UM, just a different type/level of disaster.

He's a really good coach. But he's also a real *******. Perhaps we need a real ******* here, idk, ymmv. We've had some real softies over the past 20 years.
Randy was an *******. Golden, despite appearances, was an *******. Being an ******* in and of itself isn't an answer to anything.

First handmade, Randy was an ******* to the media, but was far from it with the players. Golden was a phony in every way.

Do you really think his relationship with South Florida kids that actually are destined to have multiple kids while in college is going to be any better than his relationship with Deandre Hopkins? It would be a disaster.

You have to have a guy like Jimmy who demands discipline on the field but still allows these morons to be themselves. You can't change an entire culture from where these guys came from, especially in a country where bad behavior is considered acceptable.

The BOT has only had chatter about the next event at La Gorce Golf Course

He didn't draft Clowney or Watson. He wasn't the GM at the time and the belief in Houston is he wasn't all that happy with the Watson pick. Rick Smith made those picks and Bill O'Brien traded Clowney away the first chance he got. Clowney got traded just over 2 months into O'Brien's interim turned permanent GM tenure. He didn't make the pick on Reid either. Giving him credit for those picks would be like giving a GM credit for a great game plan in Week 12.
IMHO Clowney is still living off that hit in the backfield against Michigan in the bowl game. He's been kinda meh in the pros imho for where he got picked.

He changed things at Penn State that didn't go over that well with the fans (one of which was putting names on the back of the jerseys), the air of Paterno was still hanging over the program.

I think there are better guys we could get, but he would be light years ahead of Manny. (that might be a low bar lol)

Hiring Bill O'Brien would be a significant upgrade, but doubt he would have an interest. He'll have better opportunities when the time comes. He's not taking a rebuild job where the last five coaches have been fired or left before the fan base turned on them (Richt), spending his Saturdays in a half-full stadium up the interstate from campus. Or where who knows who within the administration or board of trustees has the power. Or whether a half-baked AD will hang onto his job or some new bean-counter will take his place.
If he's waiting on a college job, O'Brien will eventually do better.

What I'm telling you is O'Brian got rid of Hopkins for stuff that is very similar to what is very much a norm here. Sorry, you can't see it, but a part of Miami's culture problem is in fact its culture. South Florida kids have a lot of problems and it takes a special person to guide them and help them mature.
