Respectfully, what's the point of this thread. I will say your view of an American toward soccer is exactly why it will never become elite in USA. They don't care. That said, Messi is a WORLD Superstar, arguably the #1 Athlete on the Planet. #1 in jerseys sold, #1 in WC goals scored, #1 in viewership and not even close.

Anyone who says Mali is borderline psychotic. If Messi and Mali were to host a meet and greet at a mall or something— Messi would literally shut down the mall and Mali would maybe get a few hundred people if that. Absolutely ridiculous that this is even a conversation.

Every 4 years during the WC we have to hear how soccer is growing in popularity in the US blah blah blah. It’s because there is literally nothing else to watch. Lol.. Is it popular globally? Absolutely. But nobody respects the sport in the US. After Sunday, things will go back to normal. See you in another 4 years.

As far as who is a bigger celebrity locally? It can go either way. I won’t disrespect Messi by saying a 19 year old college player is more popular than him in South Florida. There is enough room in this city for both to be icons.
 
Speaking of Messi..a popular food reviewer I was watching on Youtube reviewed Messi's restaurant in Miami and did not give it rave reviews at all. It was actually pretty bad. Embarrassing type bad. Interested to hear if some of you had the same experience.

It can’t ever be elite in America because it is the 5th most popular sport here. All our best athletes go to football basketball baseball or hockey and I’ll even throw in wrestling. Don’t get me wrong I love watching the World Cup but soccer is pretty boring tbh
