X's and O's Better Hire: Cristobal at Miami or Venables at Oklahoma

You need at least one elite side of the ball to get a shot to win it all. Venables will have that defense elite in time. Will Mario have either is the question. But Mario at least has the track record of success as HC.
It's no guarantee Venables fields an elite defense as HC. He could easily end up like Manny Diaz, who if you don't know was the HC at Miami the past 3 years, but prior to that he was their DC. He was a first time HC at Miami and his defenses were his downfall ironically enough.

I'd say about even. You know he's going to have a killer defense one day at OU. He's recruiting some monsters on that side of the ball as we speak. Lebby, will he work out? That'll determine the immediate future.

Mario, we'll see as well.

Neither though will be Riley good IMO. One is an elite DC, the other OL specialist. Both will hopefully bring respectability to their programs, so to me it's a push. Non-homer pick, the elite DC may push Venebles ever so slightly ahead, but he's never been a head coach. I really don't know.

At least Veneables losses have been to conference opponents and not getting manhandled by a mediocre G5 team. Not to mention losing your starting qb and a starting db to a possible career threatening injury mid game. Those losses are more excusable, especially for a 1st HC than someone on their 3rd HC coaching gig getting their teeth kicked in and mercilessly mocked for it by the other team's hc.

I think Mario is the better hire, but Venables is in a tougher situation. Your top playmakers and leaders all transfer out to USC or graduated, while losing majority of the recruiting class. I have more 1st year sympathy for Venables.

OU crushing it in recruiting, too

Veneables took over a program that has won 10 games 16/20 seasons, the lowest win total in those seasons? 8

Cristobal took over a team that has players who lost to FIU, La Tech, 2 win GT, 3 win Duke, FSU team that hasn’t had a winning record in 4 years

Considering one HC is proven Power 5 conference winner, and has won a NY6 bowl and has experience building programs from
Ground up, I would go with 8 million Mario.

Oklahoma found their niche in being an up tempo spread offense, they should have stayed with an offensive minded coach versus pulling a 180 for a defensive minded guy, rarely works in the long-term. By default: Mario
They hired a great defensive mind and kept the uptempo spread with Lebby. They need talent on defense and lots of it.

Yes, let's foolishly blame the state of the current roster on the newly hired head coach who is in his first full recruiting season.

The HC is only one piece of the larger puzzle. 1) Will Mario get the financial support via NIL to land and retain top talent? 2) Will Mario be able to overcome almost 20 years of bad results before Miami fans fly banners? 3) Can Brent recruit? 4) Can Brent get along with offensive minds and let them run that part of the show without conflict? Tons and tons of additional questions but you get the picture (not an Anal Banger)

Lebby is not as good as Riley but I agree. That defense is going to take some better players and the implementation of a better defensive culture
