I can't remember who we were playing (GT? Colorado?), but it was at the Orange Bowl sometime after 2003. One of our players intercepted a pass and started returning it to the end zone, the QB gave chase and one of our other defensive players just absolutely destroyed him on a block. Under the rules at the time, it was a legal block, but the refs flew a flag anyway (likely b/c of how brutal it looked and that it was their QB).
Colorado I believe. Jon Beason.

St made that dude flip in the air sideways. That'd what I'll always remember from seeing that game live. Should of been a ******* fumble

The beauty of this lovely thread is the obvious annihilation of Semenholes. And I remember every single one of those hits.

The sadness is I can’t even dream of us returning to a menacing, fearsome defense like this because those are automatic ejections in today’s pvssyfied game.

The memories are priceless so thanks to each of you who contributed.

Barrow is my #1 because the hit itself was amazing, the timing was important and those were some of the greatest games in the history of CFB. Miami and FSU were both very stout and bitterly contested every inch of turf.

Sean Taylor had a bunch of incredible hits...one of which we never saw. Antrel Rolle told the story about the time Sean turned up late to practice and the Onion demoted him to 3rd team. Sean was supposed to drop way back in coverage on a play but instead he came roaring through to hit Jason Geathers in a way that Antrel described as "rocking his $#!&". Shannon then dismissed Sean from practice.

Honorable mentions:

Nate Webster: still seems to have the rep as the most consistent big hitter we've ever had. I see recency bias in this thread.

Rohan Marley: only 5'8" but he was an absolute missile. Played with reckless abandon for his body.

Bennie Blades: together with some of our other DBs in the 80s and 90s, they used to make WR think when they crossed the middle. Many of their hits wouldn't be legal today but they laid people out.

We've had some great ones.
