Because Miami has a bad habit of recruiting athletes instead of recruiting football players. Because we use 7v7 camps and measurables to "project" how good a kid's "upside" will be, instead of just recruiting the kids who produce in actual high school football games.
Not talking about these three kids specifically, just our general way of recruiting.
Sometimes it works out. Our DT projections have been pretty good. Most of the time it doesn't.
Most people on CIS overvalue "development" and "coaching." Look.... coaches have a very limited time they can spend with each kid. For one, there are 85+ kids on the rooster and only a handful of coaches. For two, the NCAA limits the number of contact hours because we live in a country full of walking vaginas.
So that means, for the most part, you are what you are. The kids who are going to be good as seniors are the kids that are good as freshmen. Kids don't really develop in college, at any school. Some do, most don't. And the ones that do.... they're the kids that take it upon THEMSELVES to get better, who work with guys like Mark Duper in the offseason and who have that drive inside themselves to improve.
Especially at positions like linebacker, where it's just as much about instincts and making good, quick decisions as it is about athleticism.
