Bat Signal UP!!! Purdue DT Branson Deen Transfers to Miami

is 6'2 290 really "undersized" in college football? i'm sure the staff could easily throw 10 pounds on him by the beginning of the season but I feel like the board wants a 350 pound dt who plays 2 snaps and is done for half a quarter rather than these 'near' 300 pound studs we've been targeting/landing
This seems like a good addition, no ones' questioning that. But I'm being to believe that DT is almost like two positions that you have to recruit for: a 3 tech that can get inside penetration, and a 0 tech that can take on multiple blockers. It seems like most we're getting are best suited for the 3 tech role. We don't have anyone that can fill the role that Courtel Jenkins did.

It's super rare to find someone that can fill both roles such as Vince Wilfork or Cortez Kennedy.

Better to hack it up than it remain in your lungs! That sounds like progress mate, great to hear, keep it going 😊
Sucks man today my eye was shut with that green ****. I'm like wtf, but everything still coming out so I assume and feel like I'm on the right track. It's crazy cause everyone has this ****. It's like passing around in Jersey and then COVID hitting hard again. I never seen anything like this where everyone has this respiratory thing going on. Highly contagious too man....I had people in my crib for 15 minutes and they get it two three days later.

I have read a lot about Steele and I’m convinced he was brought in to install a more physical system and will move on soon. I’m not a fan of what he ran, but they needed a teacher and a coach who could make the transition to gap-sound, rather than havoc defense.

To me, you want more eyes on QB’s than we see with old hats on defense. You create more turnovers, tackle better, and handle running QB’s a bit better. You also give up fewer 3rd & longs. Trade off is that accurate and poised QB’s can dice you up at times.

Cover-6, robbers, quarters with matching all are newer variations on defense that advanced teams are running.

You can remove the beginning to believe. It is 100% a different position. It’s an entirely different role.

What you really want is the unicorn like you mentioned. A 1T who can also rush the passer. Having a 1T that can do that changes your defense. Not only does it allow your defense to be base-heavy, you aren’t exposed as much by tempo because your 1T can play both run and pass. If an offense gets your slug 1T out there and gets that first 1st down, you tend to see tempo without subbing so that player can’t get off the field and you have little rush. Or vice versa if you get stuck with a DE inside, they’ll pound it.

Lots of 1T talk, and nice to have as an option. But how often do we actually have someone playing a 1T? Less than 20% of the time I'd guess.
Maybe because we have no one that can play the position competently. It also explains why our run defense is so poor.

Uga NT is 6’5 295
That isnt small.

But they played like 3 guys at the 1t and they are all pretty big.

I also doubt Bear Alexander who was a tf is 305 as well.

Are Mario and Steele going full old school Jimmy Johnson 4-3?
No sarcasm. It’s a real question.

Are you talking about guys who play at a lighter weight, and have a lot of speed and length (pause, for @Confidence1000 )?

If so, I think that would be accurate.

Don't get me wrong, I love Vince Wilfork, but if @Lance Roffers is saying that you only really NEED a big NT for about 15-20% of the snaps, then it seems like we could succeed at somewhat lower weights.

I just want to see our front 7 be our leading tacklers, instead of Kam Kinchens and James Williams.

Thanks for hitting the button (PAUSE)

You still prefer your 3tech, yes I’m using it broadly in this case, to be bigger if they can be. 280 can be effective but you would prefer guys above 300 to give you versatility. Just like you would most prefer a war daddy that can take on doubles on run plays and rush the passer, like Jordan Davis, but those just don’t grow on trees. I also believe that if we had a true 1 tech we would play him as such more than what we did. Believe the staff realized quickly what DJ’s strengths and weaknesses were.

@Lance Roffers did you think based on your film review and analysis that Jackson's play for Miami got worse as the season wore on, or was that me just imagining it? I say that because I started wondering once he announced he was transferring that he had his foot out the door before the season ended after FSU started tampering. I may be off as according to PFF Jackson was our 6th best player vs. Clemson even though the grade vs. Clemson wasn't great, and 2nd best vs. FSU. He wasn't a top 10 player vs. UVA, GT, or Pittsburgh though. Jordan Miller was actually graded higher down the stretch in most games than Jackson.

All I’m saying is some of the top run defenses didn’t have huge DTs. Pitt starters were 280&300, Iowa 289&275, clemson 300&305, marshall 294&296, jmu 276&281, south bama, 304&274, ncstate runs a 3-3-5 and used 3 DTs and none was over 305, Iowa state 292&300, osu 295&282. All these were ranked in the top 15 in run D

Good breakdown. I dont think we need someone 330 lbs to be effective but we do need someone who is strong, can hold up against doubles and is nasty enough that they actually LIKE mixing it up in a phone both holding the point. I dont think we have anyone with that mentality and man strength.

Supposedly Deen is very strong

He was one of our worst players against FSU. Jordan Miller far outplayed in the same role.

Yes, he seemed to wear down. Another thing that makes Deen so valuable is he played 80+ more snaps than Jackson. That’s a 20% increase of DJ snaps and still played better.

Still wish Jordan Miller had stayed, not sure why he left for SMU.

Lighter workload?

I think too many of these kids are just hyper-focused on their own personal situation and their own personal feelings, and they are not fully taking into account how things might change if a particular teammate or a particular coach moves on.

That's one option the other option is having a LB usually a Will who is able to handle taking on an OL in the run game and very aggressive and tackle sound with at least average coverage ability, which again, is a unicorn.
