Barry Jackson's Latest: Mark, Blades & Soldinger

There's a fine line you have to walk when it comes to the previous generations of coaches. You always have to respect their accomplishments. Especially guys who have been part of multiple title winning teams. At some point you have to separate the past and present though. Just because things were a certain way 20 or 30 years ago doesn't mean they're still like that today. There's a certain mindset among UM fans that because we had success doing certain things a long time ago, we would have the same success if we did them today. Never mind the fact that the game is totally different from the rules, to the style of play, to the kids playing it today. Should Oklahoma fire Lincoln Riley and bring back the wishbone? I mean, look at all the titles they won doing that. You don't want to alienate the past greats but let's be real. There's a reason why guys like Kehoe and Solinger aren't coaching anymore. Clappy cleaned house over a decade ago.
When Clappy cleaned house...he forgot himself...

Soldinger at 70 coaches circles around anybody on this staff, he'd straightened out offensive side of the ball in a minute.
The line of schools looking to hire him is incredibly long.

Would love to have Solly back. He hit it on the head with the entitlement comment regarding present-day college football.

Soldinger is a no-BS kinda guy.

Consider his comments - he calls it as he sees it - and lets the rough end drag.

He could probably **** off more candy-*** players in less time than any other person I can think of - but simultaneously - maybe **** them off in a manner that highly motivates them to pick up their game and get serious.

After all, it's this same attitude that he and the other coaches brought to UM that won - rose to the top - and brought those players to do things they'd never have done - left to lesser devices.

Mark Richt was part of a championship staff 20 years ago too. We should consult him.

I used to see Ted at this bar when I was a kid, my brother and I would toss the football around in the parking lot and when Ted would come out he would join us.
He was a cool guy you could see the surgical scars on his knees from his years of playing and he had this insane sounding voice that was still intimidating as he got older.
He loved to drink and it was probably too kill all that pain he suffered from his passing days.
Yup my gramps was just like that. Drank beer all day from being crippled. He played at CAL and Canadian football and 1 season as a raider

Soldinger would be a horrible recruiter today. He sounded lot a old out of touch man. Talking bout these kids text and take too many pictures with their phones. You recruit these days through social media and shît.

No doubt he knows the game, but can he and the players relate to each other?
Nothing but praise for him from those who he has coached and he has coached some great ones. You don't have to be young to relate,
you have to be knowledgeable and passionate about coaching - and those that desire to be great will relate

I'm sure there's some bitterness there ever since Clappy sacked him.
But I particularly agree with his comments telling players to "stop texting, get off the phones, and get their asses to work"

Do we think Bennie Blades wouldn’t have had some fun with IG and Twitter back in the day if it existed?

It’s a part of reality now. We have no idea whose work ethic is better based on social media posts.

Hand to Based Gawd.....I didn't mean this to turn into a bash Oldhead Soldy fest. That said, the dude could've mustered up one optimistic thing about the future of the program.

How about if one of these entitled kids "kept it real" and asked him why he hasn't had a real job in football since 2005 (despite being the victim of a spineless move by Clappy)?

This stuff cuts both ways. One can't be alllll about the results when your *** has essentially been unemployed for almost 15 years. That's too much time on one's hands to not understand the lunacy in suggesting Kehoe should be getting a third stint here too. It's also pretty convenient that he'd suggest a staff hire like that versus pining for one his former players to get a job.

Give Soldinger Cooney's job and see what kind of class you get. Guy only knows one thing - WIN

Talk to EJ, Gore, Portis or any of the other backs he's coached, he's more qualified than anyone on the current offensive staff.
Yeah I mean, thank god for his incredible coaching because that list of superstars would have sucked without him to show them the way.

No issue with Sol being someone Manny and the staff consult with on occasion. Anything (almost) to bridge the time gap between #TNM and the players and coaches from the 80s-90s is fine.

Bring Sol back for Paradise camp.

Had to lol at this bit of blatant hypocrisy:

“A lot of the work ethic and the values that these guys here tonight - Greg, Bennie - had is not there now,” Soldinger said. “It’s entitlement. It’s where’s the easiest place to go, where are they going to take care of me, what are they going to give me. Kids need to go to work and stop with ‘me, me, texting, taking pictures [on their phones].’”

Though Diaz has two staffers who were players at UM (cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph and DeMarcus Van Dyke), Soldinger wishes Diaz had more people on staff with a link to the Canes’ glory years.

The sense of entitlement isn't limited to these players that think they deserve a spot rather needing to compete for it every single day. It extends to these coaches who believe they deserve a spot because they were a good player for us once. They need to compete with the entire coaches market for the spot, and earn their salary every season. So don't talk to me about what you did for The U. Show me what you've done as a coach and what you can do for The U now.

The problem with the last regime was lack of accountability on every level. Time will tell if Diaz truly fixes that and erases the softness it breeds.

That’s where the new punter comes in
Soldinger wasn't talking about Kehoe, he was talking about himself. And he was right.

The magic element is that old, wise sage who has been through everything with the program.

We need a 'Canes Gandalf, if you will.
thats where this new Australian punter comes in.
