Quarterback Rosier expects these changes with Hurricanes offense

BY BARRY JACKSON

A six-pack of Hurricanes notes on a Friday:

▪ Though the UM defense wasn’t good enough against Clemson and Wisconsin, here are three bigger reasons the Canes aren’t yet at the Alabama/Georgia level:

1). Three of the four teams in the playoffs last season finished in the top 17 in points per game, and Clemson was 32nd.

UM? A mediocre 59th of 130, at 29.1.

2). The four playoff teams all ranked in the top 50 in third-down conversions, with Clemson 11th at 45.6.

UM? The Canes were a dismal 127th at just 27.7 percent — ahead of only three teams (UTEP, Kent and Charlotte) that went a combined 3-33.

3). The playoff teams (Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Oklahoma) all scored touchdowns on between 70 and 73 percent of their red zone trips.

UM? Just 58 percent (25 for 43), which ranked in the bottom half in the country.

That’s why Mark Richt hopes these elite skill-position freshmen will help immediately and why some UM football people privately hope N’Kosi Perry or freshmen Jarren Williams show enough to begin to wrest the starting quarterback job from Malik Rosier when spring practice begins March 20, though Richt has said Rosier will likely keep the job if he improves his shortcomings.

Regardless of whether the quarterback changes, other things will change with the offense, according to Rosier.

“We were watching practice [last season], and [Richt] said, ‘Guys get ready, we’re going back to the I-formation [with a fullback at times],’” Rosier said, with UM having added the nation’s best fullback recruit in Realus George. “That’s going to be very interesting and a lot of fun for me. I know coach Richt loves the I-formation, loves downhill, very physical running game and he wants to get back to that.”

Rosier said: “I’m excited for this offense because the two tight ends [have] very different skills set. Brevin Jordan is more of a blocking tight end and he can split out wide. Will Mallory is probably more of like your 6-6 jump ball kind of kid. Coach Richt is excited because even with Michael Irvin, we can go into [two tight end] personnel, which we haven’t done much [in 2017] and create mismatches.

“And with running back, with [five-star addition] Lorenzo Lingard and Travis Homer, and even Deejay Dallas back there, you can put Deejay in the slot and have Lingard and Travis in the backfield. There are very different personnel groups we will mess around with.”

Plus, having George, “will be a huge asset,” Rosier said. “Sometimes having that fullback to clear a hole” is big.

▪ Four-star Class of 2019 Hollywood Chaminade Madonna cornerback Keontra Smith told Canesport.com that even though he’s a soft Kentucky commitment, Miami “has a high chance [to lure him]. That’s my dream school, and I always loved that school growing up as a kid.”

▪ Everybody loves dimunitive UM 5-7 point guard Chris Lykes. Even a referee this year has offered praise during a game.

“There are not many under 6 feet as good as he is,” ESPN’s Jay Bilas said on a conference call. “Lykes is really quick and fast and gets underneath you. He’s unafraid and fun to watch.”

But he struggled against North Carolina in Thursday’s loss, hitting 3 of 11 shots on a six-point night.

▪ Miami is 8-6 in Jim Larrañaga’s seven seasons in ACC tournament play, but UM failed to advance in the tournament for the first time in Larrañaga’s seven seasons, albeit with a double bye this year.

Larrañaga is 6-6 in his career against UNC, impressive considering the caliber of the Tar Heels program.

▪ NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein is projecting these departing UM football players for these rounds: Chad Thomas in Round 2 or 3, , Richard McIntosh Jr. in the third or fourth round, Mark Walton and Kendrick Norton in the fourth round, Chris Herndon in Round 4 or 5, Braxton Berrios in the sixth or seventh round and Kc McDermott in the seventh round or undrafted.

▪ Ex-Canes file: Cornerback Sam Shields decided to resume his career this week, signing with the Rams, despite concern over repeated concussions. Shields, who made the Pro Bowl in 2014, sustained his fourth of his career in the first game of the 2016 season and hasn't played since.

Fb is fun and all but richt going to have to understand you can’t just run in 3 times in a row in the goal line. You got to diversify the playbook in the endzone and in general fullback or not. I’m praying Perry or Williams steps up this spring. They are the most talented qbs we have had in a minute

If only Rick could understand what a skinny jean wearing teenager in Buckhead with no coaching experience understood, we’d be all set.

Tried to tell yall all offseason just how garbage our Offense was, but nooooo everybody wanted to just bash the Defense at all costs.

We had one of the worst Offenses in the ACC, I mean it was below average in several categories. With the additions of all the talent we have at RB, WR, TE & OL, there isn't a single excuse anymore.

And don't even waste my time tryna talk up Rosier, it's time for Richt to push this **** thing forward & develop one of his QB's.

Yeah only so much he could do with kaaya who’s arm was limited and can make most throws but not all and was inaccurate for a “accurate” passer down the field far too often. Not to mention his non existent mobile skills in the pocket. We all know with malik and his below average inaccuracies. Was missing throwws below average qbs wouldn’t even have missed which is just horrible. He got the most out of them he could have given all of the circumstances especially in 2017.

Let’s see what he does with the guys he recruited.

One thing is clear the 3rd down efficient needs to improve on both sides of the and we need to be more efficient in the redzone on offense.

And no we did not have one of the worst offenses in the acc, it was just horrible At converting 3rd downs consistently like a top 10 team should. In spite of all that we still got all the way up to the final regular season week being #2, to me that means great things are on the horizon for us because we were far from perfect but still made a bunch of progress even with all the stuff that transpired

I am REALLY looking forward to this season. If our defense was good last year I can't wait to see it when we actually have an Offense.

Just pray to God Rosier isn't our starter

Miami's DEFENSE wasn't perfect BUT our D, wasn't the problem in 2017'!! My only excuse on the OFFENSE behalf--late in the season the injury bug showed up BUT the O, was definitely a issue thru out the season (even in some WINS)..

I was a Rosier fan (and still am), BUT he has to make big improvements to be our starter this fall!! Too much talent on the OFFENSE for Miami's O, not to be amongst the top..

Yes we did... Here look it up for yourself > http://www.espn.com/college-football/conferences/statistics/team/_/stat/total/id/1

We were 7th in passing & 9th in rushing, there were teams in front of us that don't have half the talent we do.

It wasn't just 3rd down, we were bad on offense in basically every category. Go ahead & look up our offensive stats, not just within the ACC but our national rankings, find one we were top 30 in.

We should be a much better team this season, but I don't wanna hear any bs excuses about the QB, we got 3 young guns that are more than capable to leading this team to an ACC title.

Our offense was horrible. A predictable offense is a horrible one. I'm also aware that rosier handicapped alot of it.

We also won big because of a lackluster schedule. Which is why I was down to play Kosi and let him take his lumps because I felt we could still out talent a majority of our schedule. Which we did.

Miami played one less game than all of those teams listed ahead and it’s a reasonable expectation they would have put up 550 yards or so. Regardless we need to improve at the qb position, rosier is who he is and we can’t have it. 3rd down needs to be fixed on both sides of the period. I implore You to look up 3rd down stats on defense too because it’s a big issue

We agree on the QB problem.

I'm more than aware of the stats of Defense, but the fact is I can post at least 4-5 stats that our Defense was top 5-15 in nationally, can the same be done on offense?

3rd down on Defense is an issue but it's not anywhere near as bad as 3rd down & the rest of the offense. 127th in the nation, that's the worst stat of the entire team from last season on any side of the ball.

It’s been plaguing Miami for years, amazing that we were in the top 10 for majority of the season being that bad on 3rd down when every other contender had much better 3rd down play. We fix that on both sides of the ball then we are rolling

Rosier did not recognize coverages and the open receivers. Richt said as much after the GT game. Langham was not the open receiver, but some good luck helped the Canes out at the end of the game. All season, posters on this site complained that open receivers were not being thrown to. Questions also abound about his accuracy and arm strength. If Perry or Williams demonstrate a high QB-IQ, one of them will win the job.

The upgrades at RB will help. The incoming freshmen and the emergence of DJ will give plenty of depth at RB. The new FB will support an OL that has been suspect. The offense will improve this year. The loss of experienced DL players is a greater concern. UM has a good starting line, but depth is critical. That is the big question. I don't want to see opponents run all over the Canes.
