Barry Jackson notes on Canes

It is Perry time! You have great receivers and great new back. Don’t waste this talent with a good back up QB like Rosier. We saw what he could do and it wasn’t great he made so many games close and when Defense coordinator figured him out we lost the last three games.. Time for our next step up..

If Rosier ends up starting we need to take a long, hard look at who we are recruiting at the QB position. The bar isn't set very high when you need to beat out out 45% passing with 9 TDs and 8 picks down the stretch. Perry and even Williams not projecting to easily eclipse that sends a pretty scary message for 2018.

after rosier's comments after the pitt game last season, he has no business being the starting qb anymore

saying stuff like "man I was just out there going through the motions.. oh look a rainbow! I like apples!" type of sh*t is how you lose a whole locker room

Might as well have said, "I know I'm the starter, and no matter how poorly I play I will still be the starter." That's exactly how he played all **** year. Played like junk enough that the backups had no prayer of getting mop up duty. If ever we needed the backup QBs to get mop up duty, it was last year. Instead, Rosier crapped the bed for 2 quarters pretty much every game. Every game, not just the last three.

You hyped up Shirreffs last preseason. You saw what he looked like the few times he got in last year. You should be happy we didn’t see more of the backup because the backup was putrefaction.

Rosier was the right choice last year. If he is again this year, we have a problem.

The I-form is great to PA pass out of. With the talent we have at WR, it could be deadly.

Key word “could” lol, we should just stick to spread and add more to like motions and unique route combos, im cool with I-formation on short yardage but using it more as a staple is a big mistake IMO

Second and 2, I-form. Teams expect run and you hit them with PA pass. It's all about timing. If teams are worried about the run and the pass in those situations, it makes your chances of getting a first down that much greater. Lately teams know we're going to try to run in those situations, regardless of formation, and we have seen the results.

Now, without good QB play it won't matter at all.

I do agree, I don't really want to see us be a full I-form team. I seriously doubt that will be the case with the amount of talent we are bringing in at WR. It will be situational.

Have you been following our QB recruiting for 2019/2020, and who we’ll have pushing Rosier this spring and summer.

The only problem I see is that Williams and Perry are really green. I’ll be really disappointed in Perry if he hasn’t picked things up by this point. It’s the one thing I’m concerned about him. Otherwise, I expect Rosier to get much better or get his job taken.

For me its pretty simple in thought but harder to do. We need much better QB and offensive line play and get a defensive stop more often than not on 3rd downs. The other stuff will sort itself out with elite talent. I'm pretty pumped with what we have and what is comin.

God im hoping the I-formation is only for short yardage

See, and I hope it's not. The biggest issue I have with being "multiple" is telegraphing plays based on personnel. While it's all well and good to say "we're going to run it, see if you can stop it", I feel it'd be much better to come out in just a couple formations and make the defense GUESS what you're going to run. If we trot out I-formation only on 3rd and 2 and just hand it to Homer or George every time, that's a waste of a formation, IMO.

If we're going to be a pro-style team a la Bama or UGA let's do that. If we're going to be a spread team a la Clemson or USF let's do that. Just like QBs, I believe if you have a "multiple" identity on offense, you have NO identity on offense. Personally, I think Richt would like to run what he ran his first few years at UGA - pro-style, but with QBs that can extend a play when things get wonky.

I've been watching which is why this decision will be so interesting. Assuming Rosier is who he is (which I do), going into game one feeling like neither of your two hand picked guys can exceed the very pedestrian numbers Rosier put up over the second half of last year will make me very worried about that position.

Understand experience will be a factor, but we can't go to Dallas thinking we can win with a QB who'll put up a completion percentage in the 40s.

IMO we need one of the two new guys to take control of the position by September.

Rosier won us some games, but he lost us some games too.

Other QB's better step up.

It's time.

And Richt better call better games - he's too predictable.
I never look at a QB as winning games. I hate that the media and everyone in the world started handing out wins and losses like a MLB pitcher. A baseball pitcher can strike out all the batter's without any help from his defense. He still needs his offense to score to get a win. Conversely, a QB needs so many other variables to do his job effectively. He needs the OL blocking, receivers to catch the ball, and a RB to share the load. If the defense can't stop anyone, then the team will lose.

The defense averaged nearly 3 turnovers per game. If the defense averaged one less turnover per game, we lose to FSU, UNC, GT, and maybe Syracuse. How does a 8-5 or 7-6 sound with no Coastal title? That's really what Rosier was. I nearly puked on myself when Rosier commented in an interview that he was a 10 game winner.

Rosier made some very good to exceptional plays during the season and the 4th qtr comebacks at FSU and home against GT were epic. Even in the 2nd half of the UVA game he was good. He showed great poise and leadership. I give him credit for that. He played very well against ND also.

However, I judge a QB based on his total body of work against his peers. Even that is subjective because other teams may have better or worse components to work with. His toal body of work showed inconsistency and a below average in accuracy and decision making on throws. Conversely, he did a better than average to very good job when choosing to run with the ball.

Some of the Rosier's 2nd half heroics would have not even been necessary if he performed just average in the 1st half of games. Let's not forget that if the defense doesn't get all those turnovers, Rosier doesn't even get those late game comeback opportunities.

As I said, I don't believe in QB wins and losses. But if you want to go that route, Rosier was a 7-6 or 6-7 QB based on his performances.

Rosier has a big advantage going into the Spring. That advantage is experience. A year of experience is worth it's weight in gold. He could be the starter for 2018 because he is battle tested even with all of his faults and should make some improvements.

I hope the under classmen push Rosier to be a better, more consistent QB or take the job outright. The good news is that the competition should produce better play from the QB position.

Even if Rosier holds onto the job in the Spring, he will have to play at high level during the season or he will be benched. He won't have the luxury of playing bad in the 1st half and making a comeback in the 2nd half. Unlike last year, another QB will get an opportunity if Rosier isn't getting it done.

So all we need is a better QB, better OL and better D?

Hard to argue against that.

So you judge QBs based on the totality of circumstances, yet you want to take away our close wins because the defense got some turnovers in those games? LOL. You guys are hilarious.

Rosier QB’d the team to 10 wins, not 7 or 8 no matter how badly you want to advance dopey agendas.

Rosier is not very good. I’d love to see someone beat him out, but he was our QB last year. And we had our best year in over a decade. Give the man some credit. You don’t have to make **** up to disparage him. His play spoke for itself.
