Barry Article on Rosier (mechanics)

He needs to improve his vision and anticipation as well. With good QB play we are a playoff team. Weapons all over the field on O.

No. Not only did we need to beat Nebraska, we needed other help as well, which didn’t happen.
with the weapons we have stockpiled, with good OL play, you and I should be able to lead this offense.

I believe you have Dorsey confused with Kelly, I remember our receivers having to adjust to Kelly's throws more than anything.

Dorsey also had brass balls, go back and look at most of those throws He made during the game winning drive vs FSU in 2K.

Now I don't say all this to say that Kelly wasn't talented, He definitely was, but Dorsey was a perfect fit for what we were trying to do on O at the time.

I hope you're talking about Kenny Kelly.

Rosier broke records with poor mechanics. I don’t think any of the two things mentioned are an indictment. He never believed he would have a chance at being a starting QB here so he never took it seriously until last year.

Btw the difference between 54% and 60% could just be 2 incomplete passes per game. Qb percentage is an overblown topic on this board.
Not when you're throwing 30-40 passes. Plus those throws could be game changers or savers

Yes It is improtant, as is INT%, Comp%, and Y/A. So he failed 3/4 of the most important statistical metrics for qbs. Awesome.

"Statistics are used much like a drunk uses a lamppost: for support, not illumination."

Rosier, led the Canes to 10 wins, with almost no running game and pass protection that was substandard due to a poor offensive line. And during the final 3 games, the offense was riddled with injuries at significant positions. During the most critical parts of those 10 wins the kid was money!

Now that's...AWESOME!!

I am...I always felt that the offense was bipolar when KK was the QB.

We were under sanctions at that time. You can't compare. One of the most frustrating times ever as a Canes fan was watching KK try to complete deep outs to Santana at Doak. I wanted to throw up at that game.

It's possible to be happy with the 10 win season and expect to be better this season, and still recognize our qbs bad play. Rosier didn't cause those wins bruh.

LoL. Richt literally said the exact opposite when naming Rosier the starter to open fall camp. He said he went back and watched all the film, the replays, the coaches tapes, and realized just how well Rosier played at times. He specifically said that without him making plays, some of those games we won, we probably wouldn't have won.

Kelly only started one year (99').

And yes we were on sanctions, but if we didn't let ECU & PSU off the ropes, we go 11-2 in 99'.

Like I said, Kelly may have had more physical talent than Dorsey, but Dorsey was a better fit for what we were trying to do.

Dorsey was a timing passer, which is what that offense needed at the time. Dorsey would hit that 5th step on His 5 step drops, and that ball was out...whereas with Kelly, you never knew what you were going to get. Dorsey may have not had a rocket launcher for an arm, but His arm was plenty strong enough for what we were doing at the time.

Can't be Jim Kelly, never saw him play. I loved Dorsey but he just didn't have a strong arm. Still a fantastic QB for us and the point is it's not always the guy with the strongest arm, there is so much more to that puzzle. That was really Dorsey's only knock -- if he had a cannon in addition to being the cerebral player he was, he would have had a long career in the NFL as a player. Happy for him that he is doing well as a NFL assistant coach ...

Wait, what ... Kenny Kelly? OMG no comparison. I tried to block him from my memory of Canes QBs....

I'm just happy he is trying to fix his footwork problem and watching more film than a couple years ago. Would everyone be happier if he said he wasn't working on **** and he just keep doing what he has been doing?

Nonsense! I get it--you hate the kid and want him to fail, but your reasoning is devoid of reality.
No, actually I want him to succeed since hes our starter, and I doubt Richt makes any change. I'll be hoping he plays every game like he did vs Syracuse. But thats all that is - hope. Realistically I just don't think he can. I think he's at or near his ceiling, which is an inconsistent and inaccurate passer, who makes a lot of wrong reads. I absolutely wanted (and still want) one of the Freshman to take his spot, and don't think they were given a real opportunity to do so in the spring and summer camps. I just don't see how anyone can watch last season of a 4th year player and act like he played great, just because we won 10 games. Sure he played great for a total of like 4mins vs FSU and vs the complete trash cupcake teams, including Syracuse. but what else? He ran well vs VTech, but I haven't been saying his running ability was bad. I've been saying his throwing ability is bad. If anyone can honestly say FSU, VTech, ND, Clemson, Wisconsin he was anything but plain bad, I'd love to hear the argument. Plus UNC and Pitt he got benched.

I get being hopeful he took this huge step forward, and I do hope that, but honestly I don't expect that to happen. I think its more realistic that Rosier marginally improves but drags us down from being the CFP contender that we have the talent to be. If our OLine plays above average, I think we're going undefeated, even with Rosier. The thing is I think we can go undefeated with Rosier or any of the 3 freshman at QB. So imo it absolutely makes more sense to start one of the freshman, then hope they improve enough by the end of the season that we can beat Clemson and win the ACC at the end of the year, instead of getting blown out like we did last yr.

Thank you for your well thought out response, although I disagree with many of your conclusions. We are days away from learning if Rosier has markedly improved over the off-season or has remained static. If the offensive line can produce a significant running game and improved pass protection then I believe Rosier will have a special season. Time will tell...

As much as I wish you were wrong your analysis was spot on. To say I was stunned by Rosier's performance qualifies for the "Decade of Understatements Award". After the first 3 or 4 throws were jaw-dropping inaccurate I tried to convince myself that he was amped-up but would calm down and get into a rhythm. I was right! He got into a rhythm--a rhythm of throwing the ball everywhere the receivers weren't!

If there is a quarterback change in the offing then the offensive line must improve their pass blocking to see a significant improvement in play over Rosier. Not even remotely trying to manufacture an excuse for Rosier play, but LSU defenders basically set-up camp in the Canes offensive backfield.

Again...you were right, and I was wrong as wrong can get.
