playmakers on espn was 100 times better. i'll watch next week but was disappointed with the pilot episode

it reminded me more of the old espn show playmakers, the NFL put pressure on espn to cancel the show it will be interesting to see how long this one lasts being on HBO you know much worse than things will happen, plus they are using real NFL team names

I would be surprised if HBO doesn't already have permission since they do the Hard Knocks show.

From what I've read they don't have permission and HBO just kind of shrugged their shoulders when asked about it.

The less anything is like Entourage should be viewed as a positive. I only saw the first 15 minutes last night but it seemed okay. It'll get renewed based on The Rock alone. On a slightly different note, I'm hearing HBO is reuninting Crockett and Tubbs for True Detective Season 3. Will also be set in Miami and is slated to be the most disturbing and grisly HBO vehicle to date. The plot will apparently center around who killed our program and tortured its fans for over a decade. Joe Zagacki will have a small cameo.

You watch your mouth when you speak about Entourage. Classic.

I don't get the Entourage comparisons at all. It really wasn't funny like a Entourage is, and I feel like it's going to be a much darker show than Entourage. The only similarity is Marky Mark's involvement in both.

Also, opening credits is Drake's verse on a Wayne song called Right Above It...

As Drake told us on his last mixtape: "it's our year... All year"

Haha. You get a pass on Entourage as every dude your age seems to be a fan. That said, that show was white douchedom at its max. We don't need a black version. I agree with you in the comparison not being accurate (at least so far) with Ballers. This seems like it'll be more of a mix between Any Given Sunday & Playmakers but with more comedy and possibly inferior acting. I finished the first episode and am still entertained enough to keep watching.

Possibly the worst show ever created.

Beyond cheesy.

Did anyone expect anything less? The Rock seems like one of the nicest guys in Hollywood, but that's his career in a nutshell. Cheesey movies, but lighthearted and fun. The same was true of his Fast partner who passed away. I never thought that series would last long, seven movies later....it's possible this series could go a while as he obviously has a fanbase.

Dumb summer show, fun to watch to kill some time, not going to win any Emmys.

Anyone who expected anything more than a chance for The Rock to make a show about being a footballer in which he gets to drop F bombs and bang hot girls is misguided. One instant edge over Entourage: The Rock actually has charisma and you can see why people on the show are supposed to like him, as opposed to Adrian Grenier, who was a bad actor playing a bad actor.

Also, a business note: Warner Bros and HBO are both owned by Time Warner, and The Rock is the surest box office bet that isn't in a superhero franchise, so when he came to the bosses with a passion project for TV they were probably more than happy to accommodate.

It also doesn't hurt that HBO is trying to bring in more folks with HBO Now to ward off the Netflix challenge, so having a show featuring a lot of black guys and hot chicks isn't a bad way to widen the net on a platform that is usually consumed by rich white people.
