Would be nice to see this kid get on the field for once so he can be evaluated via the eye test vs all this playbook and academic issue mumbo jumbo we constantly hear about

Missing the off-season hurt him. He’s not a true LB like Flagg, he needs to keep sharpening mentally.

@DMoney, how much practice has Huff had? Did he miss both off-seasons? Because I remembered he enrolled in August 2019, so he missed all the early summer. Then he was declared academically ineligible. So I doubt he got much work on the field that Fall.

So bummed because this kid was considered one of the best, if not the best, linebacker in South Florida his class.

You have it right. Huff needs reps. He flashes on special teams so there is physical ability and willingness. Speeding up between the ears is key.

Remember, he was a WR for a while in HS.

The critical metric for LBs we don’t appear to focus on or quantify, though we could. We track 40 times and shuttles - which tell you something about how kids cover ground once they know where they’re going. Certainly important for WRs and DBs who often have a lot of ground to cover and fewer obstacles in between.

But at LB, reaction time and diagnosis are critical inputs. How quickly does the kid figure out where he needs to go and how often is he right, then how effective is he at getting there (vs getting taken out of play by blocker, e.g.). You can estimate this stuff with game film. Maybe we do. In game play, slow reaction time and bad accuracy can make a 4.5 kid look slow, and good time and accuracy can make a 4.8 kid look fast.

The good news is this stuff is somewhat trainable / developable for kids who put in the work.

Anyhow, excited to see how Huff and Brooks develop this year.

Huff reminds me of a hyped kid coming in and in reality his contribution will be as a special teams kid who will play as hard as he can there. Similar to a Carl walker if any of you remember the name. High rated kids who for whatever reason just can't get beyond that point of being just a special teams demon

That he could not sniff the field when the competition was wide open and we were desperate for decent LB play speaks volumes. Every LB flashed at times but I don't remember anything of note from him aside from missed tackles on kickoffs.

Blast from the past. Watching replays of the 2000 and 2001 season you hear his name called for some massive special teams hits. Can’t remember any plays he made on actual defense though.
