not even 20 years ago. we didn't even sell out consistently 20 years ago. there are about 35-40k realistic diehard fans for the team in the area that attend. the rest are either going once in a while or with their friends as an outing. they all come out for big games though.

I wish wed do a take your kids for free day this weekend tbh. instead of taking them To Disney for the long weekend, bring them to the canes game for free and provide a free pre game tailgate.

However, I am disappointed that the Bethune game is not sold out. I recognize games like Bethune and other similar matchups have not been well attended historically and are unlikely to generate sellouts in the future. But, when one thinks about the financial commitment (finally) shown by the administration to the football program...the energy, passion and effort shown by Mario to revive this program…the changes in culture that have taken place...the commitment to excellence by every single member of the football staff...well, it’s truly remarkable and unimaginable a year ago.

That commitment and behavior should be rewarded. Every so-called ‘Canes fans in this town needs to show up on Saturday.

The University, administration, players, and coaching staff (especially Mario) has earned the right to play this first game in front of a sellout crowd. Future attendance will obviously depend on performance.

Miami has NEVER consistently sold out home games. Even when they were the best team in the country. There were a couple of seasons in the Orange Bowl where they averaged over 60,000 but that was also in a 73,000 seat stadium and the numbers for big games would get inflated because they’d add extra seating in the open end zone. Even back in 2001, there’d be 37,000 people in the crowd for a Temple or Rutgers snoozer.

02 was one of the seasons they averaged over 60k. I believe the other ones were immediately following a championship too. Even then, they still weren’t selling out games weekly. Maybe if they ever win another national title, they can get some people to jump on the band wagon again

eh. its miami bro. it isnt a sports town. the fanbase is small and the ones that attend is even smaller. much more comfortable for people to watch on their couches and still support.

its also Bethune which matters. no one cares that Mario is the coach when the attendance is heavily based on who we play not on our team (reason why the big game opponents get larger crowds no matter how good or bad we are).

we have 35k STHers this year. say 25K maybe 27K show up bc I can tell you that there are a decent amount of STHers who dont live in FL but have tickets bc they graduated from UM and want to have tix for the few games they show up to (its also cheaper doing this than buying a 100 level ticket on stubhub for FSU).

the rest will come from single game sales, employees, students. its Labor Day weekend so its a good weekend where some students will go home or go to the beach and hang out, tailgate and hit up the bars bc it is Bethune lol, etc.. id say 6 at best show up in the stands. its not employee day where its like a 3-1 ticket thing. they said they sold 50k tickets for the Bethune game. im gonna say 40-45 actually attend which is on par for that opponent any season good or bad

we did take your kids for free vs troy lol in 01. people forget that. this city isnt a sports town. its an event town. dont base attendance numbers like were a sports town.

I haven’t checked where they are selling tickets but I wish Rado could tarp those upper corners that sometimes have 4 total people in a whole section. That takes the total seating down to 52k I believe.

I am assuming we will have 45k for Saturday. If it was a night game I think they’d get close to selling out. Genuinely worried about Game 2 being at noon, that’s a nightmare always for UM from an attendance standpoint

Acoustics in HRS are terrible for clarity of sound. I went to Red Hot Chili Peppers last night and I won’t get relief from the ringing in my ears for days. It is a loud place and sound does not escape well. Place was packed (2/3rds because of the stage - every available seat was filled).

Fact of the matter is that this town follows a popularity contest and thus loves winners. If the team isn’t winning then it isn’t popular. If it is not popular, then people don’t go. This was the Heat. It was the Panthers (still is to come degree). It is the Marlins. And has been the Phins (hopefully things turnaround this year and ticket sales have gone through the roof with the recent spending). There are too many other things to do than to go to a .500 team and those others can’t get credibility by snapping a selfie at a game if the team isn’t popular or the fact of being there isn’t seen as important.

The Field of Dreams line totally applies here. “If you build it they will come”. We win, this is all moot. And they will come most weekends, not just the huge games. The reality is that selling the top of the corners of HRS is only relevant when the rest of the stadium is full. Adding those additional 5,000-10,000 fans will make a very loud stadium deafening, but not having those seats filled will still make home field advantage a true advantage.

the canes fanbase aren't the fins and heat etc. the diff is that the UF and FSU fan (there are A LOT if not equal amount of fans of those schools here as UM esp w the number of grads that live here or are from here) are still dolphins or heat fans. they are not canes though.

But, in my view, the University, administration, coaching staff, players and Mario deserve a sellout. I can accept lower attendance for future games given the reasons you outlined. It’s expected, quite frankly. However, this is the first game of a new era, not just a new coaching staff. Most of us could only dream about the financial commitments and cultural changes made in an effort to restore this program among CFB’s elite.

It’s a shame they will not get what they deserve. Pity really.

Hey man I’m going for that reason, and it’s actually the first one I attend since ND in 2017 I actually just realized. I ain’t paying no $15 for a bad beer or whatever it is now, but I do plan on packing a nice J and smoking it on the outside railing somewhere around kickoff. Should be a good time.

This. Either people have short memories or they never actually went to the games. Whether it was the 80s heyday, the 2001 dream season, or now, unless it's a huge game or in state rivalry, the stadium won't get close to filled. Whether it was the OB or Hard Rock/Joe Robbie/Landshark.

Positive influences on attendance = buzz around Cristobal, the in-state HBCUs Bethune/FAMU always draw better than you'd think because of area alumni who just want to come out, have a good time and support their team and band. Negative influence on attendance = it's gonna be mother ****ing hot.

Have you been going to games for the last 40 years to make this claim? I have! I have also seen the area and culture change during that time. Most people down here are more concerned with being seen at an event versus going to the event that they want to go to. This culture is entirely different than it once was and changes the dynamic entirely.

Back in the day, the OB would be mostly full for run of the mill games. Tulsa, West Virginia, San Diego State, Washington/Washington State, Arizona…you name the team. We would of course sell out the big ones (FSU, PSU, ND).

But we haven’t been relevant since being members of a real conference. And we haven’t been relevant in this South Florida atmosphere that loves being a follower of a winner, so I don’t know how you can make that claim. I could see us being mostly full for UVA, UNC, VT, NC State, Wake (in good years) and of course selling out for FSU and Clemson…so long as we are a top 10 team. The games are fun when we are spanking the teams that we should and even better when we are on top. But more so nowadays, we would be the popular draw, and that is what this culture loves most.

Bethune, FAMU, Central Connecticut St, Middle TN State, these games in the middle of the day/heat are only for the truly devoted fans, and will always be just that as no one else cares but the loyalist. But look at other stadiums for the likes of Morehead State or Austin Peay University. Even Alabama won’t fill a stadium for those games and there is nothing to do there as an alternative.

In the recent years we've been good, 2017 for example, we were top 25 in the country for attendance those years. We'll never be at Tennessee, A&M, LSU levels but if Miami is top 25 I don't know how anyone can say a **** thing.

I think we will see some change in the game day support. Miami has not been run right since the rise of social media and the ability to reach alot of people through non traditional means. That leaves us with alot of room to grow and a generation or 2 of South FL fans who been waiting on the canes. It was good to see all those empty seats at FSU, they never has sustained periods of losing and it shows their fans are no different from ours, except they are worse cuz they seen a a championship and playoffs within the last decade
