ASU Fan: Thoughts on Pac12 ACC Partnership/Alliance

ASU fan here. I come in peace.

There have been rumors of ACC and Pac12 partnership (play conference games against each other and have champs play each other).

If this partnership occurs and Miami, FSU, and Clemson (maybe Oregon) were offered 20-30 percent more revenue year than other conference members, would Miami consider staying in the ACC long term?

If keeping up with the SEC/Big10 is the end game, this proposal may incentivize the top brands to stay (assuming the yearly payout it close to the Big10/SEC).

In this scenario, Miami could earn similar $ per year to the SEC and not have play in the SEC gauntlet

Thoughts?
I don't think you'll find any Canes fans that want to stay in the ACC. I'm pretty sure most of us want to see it burn burn burn... and go up in tobacco smoke. That being said, would love to come visit and check our your coeds!! We know your cheerleaders are hot, but how's your color guard?

The only question that matters is how strong is the ACC GOR, and do the B10/SEC want us. Those are the only 2 questions that matter. Either the ACC GOR is strong enough to keep us (and thus strong enough to keep all ACC members in Football), in which case it's in the P12s best interest to do this deal to appease the ACC so yall can be saved .... or the GOR isn't strong enough to keep everyone and the teams will leave if the B10/SEC come calling. It's quite simple:

ACC gives like $35M/yr per team. 20-30% increase would put us at $45M. **** just to make it more competitive lets just say the ACC will pay us $45M next year, and 30% premium on that would make it $58M/yr payout for us...

That's still less than we'd be making in the B10 and SEC by 20%+ who could be paying anywhere from $70-$100m/school or some crazy ****. It's really not even close.

The best case scenario for ASU imo is P12/B12/ACC merge and just get the remnants after all the top programs leave and try to keep the bottom of the barrel out of it. Honestly best case is yall can keep Oregon and UTah out of Pac and VTech and NCSt out of ACC. But all the while leaving out teams like Oregon State and Washington State in PAC, Maybe KState and WVU from B12, Wake Forest and Boston College from the ACC...
Problem with that scenario is twofold: The SEC/B1G will try to keep any other conference out of any playoff scenario
and
Lets be honest here....from a national perspective is anyone really interested in watching Colorado/Duke in fottball? On any given saturday youare gonna have Texas/Miami Alabama/Clemson Colorado/Duke....what games are eyeballs going to? Not colorado/duke. Othere than a handful of teams in the ACC (Miami, CLemson, FSU, maybe UNC) nobody cares about the rest except their fans.

You have come in peace and made a thoughtful post. Much respect.

As a 35-year UM student/alum/booster/season-ticket-holder, I can tell you that unequal revenue is not such a great "solution", unless you had very specific reasons and rationales for it. Granted, Miami's past experience was in the Big East, but the REASON why we had to make a change and go to the ACC was because our annual conference revenue fluctuated so greatly, as it was based heavily on football post-season and basketball NCAA success.

Now, if you toggled the "unequal revenue-share" to TV markets or something like that, it might make more practical sense. You would have unequal money, but it would be PREDICTABLE unequal money, so you would not have wild year-over-year fluctuations.

Keep in mind, though, "TV markets" would be different from "brand". For instance, F$U is very well known, but it's in a very small market within Florida. Even if you "gave" F$U the Penasacola and/or Jacksonville markets, I think it would be a huge stretch to give them credit for Orlando and Tampa, what with UCF and USF being there.

I have tremendous respect for the west coast teams, but y'all are FAAAAR apart (geographically). I hear your concerns about "making sure Miami gets more money", but in the southeast US, there are also a lot of other issues related to rivalries and bragging rights and "who is relevant" and whatnot. I do believe that there is a healthy fear that if any ACC teams "stay" in the ACC instead of jumping to the SEC/Big 10, then we lose out on recruits, we lose out on post-season, we lose out on AP/Coaches rankings, you name it.

At the end of the day, even if you gave Miami and F$U "more" money, you'd essentially have to give Duke and GaTech and Syracuse and BC "less" money. While it might seem like they are "OK" with that today, I'm not so sure that is great for the future, and I'm not so sure they don't eventually find another option. Plus, some of those schools (GaTech, BC) are in pretty sizable TV markets, so I'm not sure on what basis we would pay them LESS.

Finally, years ago during the last round of expansion, I brought up the idea of an "A&P Network", a combination of the ACC and the Pac 12. I don't know if this is the case everywhere, but my cable carrier in Florida has SIX channels for the Pac 12, and only ONE (of the two) ACC channels. It's bizarre. So I have always thought that if you could bracket both coasts, and provide Saturday content from 11 am (EST) to midnight (PST), you'd have a very compelling block of games for football fanatics to watch all day long. Same with hoops. Same with baseball. Even if we didn't use all eight (combined) channels, even if we had FOUR channels, we would have, by far, the best programming. And the most eyeballs.

Never happened though. And I think it might be too late. The ONLY way that this works is:

1. Convince ND to join the ACC
2. Take Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech, Houston, BYU, Kansas, K-State, and Oklahoma State to the Pac 12
3. Take UCF, Cincy, and USF to the ACC

18 team ACC. 18 team Pac 12.

NOW you've got something.

SEC and Big 10 can continue to have a d!ck-measuring contest. ACC and Pac 12 create an affiliation that spans both coasts. VERY competitive in California, Texas, and Florida, the three largest states. So-so in NY and PA (Syracuse/Pitt). Decent in IL (lots of ND fans in Chicago). Toeholds in OH and GA, the 7th and 8th largest states. Dominant in NC, the 9th largest state. Fvck Michigan, the 10th largest state.

It could work. Whether the ACC and Pac 12 have the leadership to get stuff done quickly, who knows?

sounds good but ACC commissioners have made 1 bad decision after another lengthy TV contract, revenue rights
as well as Phillips rejecting 12 team expansion that the biggest Dawg in the room SEC commissioner G.Sankey wanted
and worked over a year to put together. i think the ACC is still run by Tobacco road Bball guys and i that we( Miami) must move on
hopefully SEC......along with FSU,Clemson maybe UNC if not UNC( could go to B1G) then Va.Tech
also would the potential match up have the "juice" to excite ESPN or Fox $$$$ wise
your idea on more money for success is great, and i think this is an idea that will start to gain traction
. Why should Vandy get the same payout as Bama or UGA ?. were moving to play for pay, why not challenge schools to perform as well.......same goes for all B1G schools who consistently underperform

Hey bud.

It's really, really simple. Any and every school that has a chance to go B1G/SEC will. Period. End of story. No "if's." That goes for the Miami, Clemson and UNC's, as well as the Oregon's and Washington's of the world. ASU/UA seem destined to be left out right now, though I guess you can campaign on the PHX TV market. It's a tough beat, you guys deserve better.

Also we're not scared of any "gauntlets." Bring it on.
that's the reality of the situation, I for 1 want to get away from ACC ASAP , a whole mess of bad decision adding ND to all sports except for football foolishly thinking they would give up independence for ACC, lengthy TV deal, GOR .....
as well as Phillips spearheading the 12 team football playoff expansion when the biggest Dawg in the room SEC commish Sankey wanted was another massive mistake as well. Sankey tipped his hand right after when he commented on the decision maybe there won't be a next time.......its all about the Benjamin's at end of the day

If Miami stays in the ACC while everyone else hops to the big 2 they should just dissolve the football program. Outside of the top 2 there will be “the rest” all on par with the current G5. Standing pat will likely be suicide

Thanks for the post,
But sorry to say, the ACC and PAC are dead conferences walking. If they were on their game, they should've fully merged when OU and TX joined the SEC.
Looks like youse guys along with Arizona, Oregon and Oregon State, UW and WSU may go to the Big XII, which is cool and all, but, TBH, it's likely the best move for ASU. I mean, it won't be the SEC or BIG, 2nd tier maybe, but at least UT wouldn't be hitched to a sinking ship. It is what it is.

Here’s an interesting read, w/ some insight. But both the PAC-12 & ACC made some costly missteps; the ACC had zero excuses for it’s missteps, being that I believe they were the last P5 conference to sign an exclusive network deal, so they had templates from the SEC & B1G to follow, and a template from the PAC-12 to avoid. The PAC-12 Network was a unmitigated disaster. Here I am on the WC, in their biggest market, & I can’t even get the PAC-12 Network. The ACCN was the same bull chit, so how did both ***** up this badly?

I’m not sure what a merge does for us. Unless ESPN is going to pay $1.5B/yr for both conferences to have this partnership, I’m not sure the benefit; b/c right now, B1G teams r set to be in the $70m/range distribution. If we’re at a $30m distribution range under this partnership, it don’t do chit for us.

Has anybody on this board actually ever seen the revised ACC agreement that was extended to 2036? That 247 article that mentioned "malleable" terminology or clauses was a cause for hope. The original agreement was only a 4 page document and apparently didn't even have standard clauses such as the State in which the agreement would be litigated in the event some litigation was required. The NEW agreement is apparently a 20 page agreement that was said to contain some sort of "competitive revenue" clause. Would be outstanding if Radakovich were able to make an announcement that "the exit of UM from the ACC has been agreed to with the ACC, ESPN, and the move to the SEC will take place commencing with the 2024 season".

Perhaps CBS might expand their CFB coverage, or Amazon or Apple?

But I agree, Miami needs to be $EC or B1G.

ASU? Sweet, I used to skate with Chris McGaha in Mesa/Tempe. Some of the best hands to ever come through that school.

Question "ASU-Fan":

How did you randomly come across CIS and then decide to "come in peace"?

Obviously the porster base here at CIS is world famous, as you can look no further than our consitent quoting on MBG (they just jelly bïtches).

What drove you embark on your reverse Lewis & Clark Expedition to SoFL?

Also, you have some mighty fine snapper who attends your school. Please get with our very own @Baba Yaga to share some pics.

Nope!!!!

I was listening to a podcast where the SEC and B1G will be getting over $100M each when the new teams our added. That's just too much of a gap not to jump. Especially when Miami wants to be in the top group of teams playing for a national title.

I think once the B1G and SEC finish their realignment of ACC and PAC-12 teams (probably in 2025/2026), the remaining teams from the PAC-12/BIG-12/ACC should merge into 1 or 2 conferences. I think that would provide in the ballpark of the same revenue the ACC and PAC-12 are getting now.

Perhaps the Pac12 / ACC could do something different from the P2 to stand out and make it unique. Reality is that a lot of good teams in bad markets arent getting a P2 invite, so they desperately need something to keep fans interested and make the teams somewhat relevant. Let's say the PacAcc also merged in AAC teams and maybe a couple other G5 conferences, then set up a tiered system with relegation like many soccer leagues. The legacy P5 schools could start off in the top tier, which comes with a bigger share of TV $$$. Suppose WSU sucks a couple years in a row and UCF wins 10+ games in back to back seasons. WSU would get bumped down to Tier 2 and UCF goes up to Tier 1 and gets a bigger piece of the pie. It would raise the stakes significantly and make for interesting TV.

I just don’t think this is viable anymore. I see it like Miami moving from the Big East to the ACC, it would still be a second tier conference. And in a world of 3 conferences with the other two in the top tier, that’s no place to be.

Miami needs to go to the strongest conference that will take us, not try to make something average into something great.
