Assuming Mensah is good...

Just off the top of my head as far as guys I've heard will be in the conversation. Kiper put something out recently saying he predicts at least 5 QBs will be picked in Round 1. But he could see himself getting up to 12 Round 1 grades.

I believe Kiper had Moore and Arch as definite first-round locks, and then he said he could easily see Mensah, Carr, and Maiava playing their way in. Trinidad's size will likely keep him down the board, but obviously he's an incredible college player.

I agreewith 'will be in the conversation', realistically guys like Sellars will fall off sooner than later, same with Leavitt. Although i see him a mid 2 to early 3 guy. Consistency is key with those guys.

Maiava has to cut back on negative stuff also, but I still see him a mid 2 late 3 guy.

There are only going to be SO many 1st rd guys. And in that, Mensah has all of the tools to be a top 5 pick.

So bottom line, no he really should not be at UM next season, especially if he has the season he is expected to have.

Agreed, if he throws for 4000 yards and 40 TDs and is in NYC in December, I really don't see how he'd come back. And that's what I expect.

Also we can go in circles for days on this stuff, it's going to change so much. What would this board have done to me if I said, last September 8th, after the ND game, that Mendoza would go 1.1 and Beck would go in the 3rd round? I'll let it all play out, but there's no denying there are a lot of guys who are on scouts radar's for being Day 1 picks.

Mensah looks too good to stay another year, Think of someone like Mestamaker who just lost to Tulsa.

Taylor, like the former league MVP, came from a little country town in Mississippi and was overlooked by a lot of recruiters.

McShay ain't blowing smoke about Taylor's arm talent.

I watched him some as a true freshman at Mississippi State last season. He made a few of those JaMarcus Russell-type throws where it looks like the ball was shot out of a cannon and the pass ends up right on the money 60 yards down field

Man that list has 2, MAYBE 3 guys who will be able to play in the NFL.

Saw this kid last year and was intrigued, now I’ve moved past intrigued to highly interested.
 
mensah could put up video game numbers (and i think he will) and still probably won't be the top QB in the draft. his arm strength is nfl-caliber but not much more, and when nfl teams draft a QB in the top 5 they typically look for elite physical traits, of which mensah has none. not saying it's right or wrong, but it's how it is.

there's a very real world in which he's a late first/early 2nd round type player in a QB class as loaded as this one. and at that point him coming back starts to get a good bit more realistic.

I could not disagree more.

The NFL looks for a few key factors in a QB:

- Winning
- Vision and decision making. The ability to read the field, go through progressions, and pick apart defenses choosing the correct target.
- Accuracy
- Leading a team. Being able to carry a team on your shoulder.

Elite physical traits are just a plus. If theres a huge lack in them, it can also hurt. Mensah has no concerns with these.

First of all he is 6'3 205. Size check. Arm strength is not Josh Allen level, but plenty good for the NFL, check. He is fast enough, check.

If he puts up numbers like Ward did, he is #1.


Do you see elite (superior to Mensah) physical traits in Baker Mayfield? Joe Burrow? Mendoza?

all three of those guys have better arms than mensah. burrow is probably the closest, but he’s more capable of driving the ball and he also had arguably the greatest QB season of all time in college football. burrow and mendoza also have size on mensah- his height is fine but he has a comparatively slight build. mayfield is the true outlier here and it was a big point of discussion even at the time that he didn’t have the size or tools typical of a #1 pick QB! mendoza also benefited from a weak QB class and that likely won’t be the case this year.

anyway, I’m not saying it can’t happen or that it shouldn’t happen. we should all be rooting for mensah to go as high as possible, and maybe he will win over nfl evaluators this year. but there’s a reason he was getting 3rd round grades even after putting up ncaa-leading numbers at a p4 school last year.

Not worth arguing over. Mensah has one of the best arms in terms of touch that I've ever seen at the college level. Scouts are catching on and agreeing with what I said. I have seen credible people comparing his touch to Joe Montanas this week lol

he has unbelievable touch, there’s no arguing that. it’s velocity that he lacks.

dane brugler currently has mensah ranked 40th on his big board and he’s generally one of the more clued-in guys to how nfl teams are thinking throughout the year. he had mendoza 20th around this time last year, which shows how things can change, but also shows that mensah isn’t starting from a place of universal regard among these guys.

you’re right that it’s not really worth arguing over though. we should just enjoy him while we’ve got him lol.

Darian Mensah led the nation in downfield throws on third down during the 2025 college football season.
While playing for the Duke Blue Devils in 2025, the quarterback topped the country with 86 pass attempts that traveled at least 20 yards downfield on third down. [1]
On those critical third downs, Mensah attempted 119 total passes, completing 59% of them for 916 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. His downfield aggression helped power Duke to an ACC Championship

completely irrelevant. brock purdy was one of the best deep ball passers in the nfl last year and nobody would ever accuse him of having a cannon. as i already mentioned, what mensah doesn't have is the velocity to drive throws into the middle of the field. it's not some hugely limiting thing and he doesn't have a noodle arm, but he certainly would not be in the top half of nfl starters in terms of arm strength. look at literally any scouting report on mensah by a respected evaluator and you'll see "average at best arm strength" or something similar. it is what it is. doesn't mean he won't be awesome for us this year. beck's arm was weaker lol
