Article: Canes at a Crossroads Under Cristobal.

Texas A&M was 8-5 last year - a typical Jimbo season - with Elko at the helm. The example you're giving isn't really jiving with thte premise you're trying to attach to it. I'm not looking for an argument and I hope you didn't "hear" that tone in my comments.

I'm not saying that winning isn't important - it is. It's far more important than recruiting rankings because ultimately, that's what the program is judged by. Yes winning has an impact on draft success/recruiting. So we are completely on the same page there. I'm not buying the gloom and doom, that's all. We've had 4-5 years of recruiting classes under the new rules (that don't even really exist yet) and I don't think that's a big enough sample size to draw some of the conclusions you're trying to draw. You might end up being right. You might not. We will see. The End.
It was Elko's first class. Usually coaches have at least a 1 year honeymoon.

If he takes a step back this year or stalls again dont expect A&M to be a consistent top-5 team in recruiting.

Our Administration has ALWAYS given every coach all the time/opportunity to prove it - especially when they factually have shown tangible progress year over year

Diaz didn’t even get 2.5 seasons. And he got canned halfway through the 2021 season, coming off the 2020 season where Miami ended higher in the AP poll than Oregon, and while playing a much harder schedule.

I didn’t see a major upgrade in switching to Mario for 3x time the salary and I still don’t. You can say it brought in the big money donors, but 2026 is looking Diaz level. without NIL (which Diaz did NOT have), I think this 2026 recruiting class would probably end up ranked in the high 20s , low 30s.

And was a total coach in the program for like 6 years and we got progressively worse especially at his own ******* position, and the school had to pay Temple a buyout likely larger than all the assistants we have let go under Mario combined to even get him when he was fully unproven. Oh and the only reason he was let go at all is BECAUSE we secured Mario. Literally even after he was bad, he was 100% still getting at least another year if we didn't convince Mario to come...

he shouldn’t have been hired in the first place. But since he was, he should have been able to be the HC for 4 years. Thats enough time for a pre-NIL coach to reshape the program like he wants it. And after 4 years if there is no progress then make a change. A coach nowadays can turn a team around in 2 years. I cut HCs less slack now than I did 6 years ago. What do the Cristobal defenders always say- “we’ve sucked for 20 years so can’t expect miracles”. Did I miss the part where Miami was a perennial playoff contender under Shannon, Golden, and Richt, until Diaz came in and ruined everything?

Miami was never a playoff contender of the coaches you named. Who you smoking lol 🤣

You missed the fact that what you're describing was LITERALLY the plan unless they lured Mario here lol. What this argument is about is that this administration doesn't give the coaches here enough rope basically. Yet the ONLY reason Diaz was fired was because we had THE GUY they all wanted. Not because they were going to Fire Diaz lol. You don't see the big fat difference there? If we had a quick pull setup on Diaz he would have been out mid season and whether or not Mario agreed to come or not. But that wasn't the case, now was it?

Take a look at A&M

their recruiting after the #1 class took a hit.

They took a step back and went #19 and #15 respectively. Elko had the #10 class this year.

He currently has a top 3 class. If he craps the bed don't be surprised if he takes a hit this year and stumbles in next years class.

Again these kids want to win and go early in the draft. They are going to bag schools who are offering these two things as well.

Michigan State has a strong NIL program but as soon as they started losing their recruiting fell off with classes in the 20s to now the 40s and 50s.
Funny you mention Michigan State. I work with a guy who played there back in the late 2000s under Dantonio. Had a good college career and sniffed the league.

I asked him what he thought about MSU’s program. He said he was not too worried about NIL though they can never compete with OSU in terms of playing players.

But what he did say was that the Transfer Portal has hurt them the most. He said player evals and development were always MSU’s equalizer when it came to Michigan and OSU - same with schools like Wisconsin and Iowa.

They all had a puncher’s chance until the portal where guys leave after a year so you can’t develop them for the long haul anymore.

I can buy the “this is the year to show it” concept. However when I see “make or break year,” I’m not sure what that means. It sounds sort of like “we don’t win and we are done,” but again, what does “done” mean? No hot seat? No head coach fired? After reading this last reply, I highlighted what I think you meant by the “break” side of the equation. If that’s correct, are you tied in to the boosters who make the large NIL donations? Have they specifically told you they’re putting a lock on their donations if we don’t make the playoffs? I ask because as far as I can see, as long as we have money to put with our offers, recruiting won’t get that much harder. Fran Clown just pulled a 5 Star from Miami to Snowacuse.
I agree.

It's a test of whether this head coach can get this program to "perennial national contender" status rather than just being a top-15, top-20 program.

I've said previously that I don't look around the country and see head coaches that would have us in a better place as a program. I believe the program is what it is. The results are going to be the same.

They’re the ones paying the buy outs for all his firings sport . My post went over your head. Miami has been cheap hence why they wouldn’t fire people. They literally counted pennies . There’s a reason multiple coaches had to sue UM to get their money. So “ giving them every opportunity” is false . Miami was the dollar general of P4 programs for multiple decades. Al Golden wouldn’t have been able to keep moving on from coordinators and assistants every year because Miami wouldn’t eat that money.
I see this as the main reason why the program and our NIL backers won't panic if Mario stays in the 8+ win range. They know the school underfunded the football team for decades, and had 5 failed coaches (Elmer Fudd, Onion, Orange Tie, The Mark Richt and Yacht Boy) to show for it. They need to grin and bear it for at least a few more years.

For me, anything less than 10 wins, an ACCCG and playoff appearance is a failed opportunity. But I think the backers will be more forgiving provided Mario doesn't totally crap the bed.

Hmmmm, seems like some of us have been saying the same thing, but have been scarlet lettered as mopes or slurpers for others.
Anyone who doesn’t believe this is a make or break season is delusional. I believe the general consensus outside of a handful of absolute Mario Stans is that Miami HAS a to play in the ACCCG and make the playoffs this year.

Otherwise yes. We’re just Texas A&M without the *** male cheerleader squad.

Agree with all of that except the last part.

They may have a *** male cheerleader or two, but those dudes are likely straight as an arrow and have the best seat in the house at the games. Planted firmly underneath a good looking and fit woman with a view to the sky and out onto the field.

One of my old neighbors growing up two years younger than I was a male cheerleader at UF and the times I had when I'd swing through his place there was akin to attending a Playboy Mansion party. He made a good call on that and married an absolute dime. The good old days, but I got mine too, but those brief stops up there were an absolute blast.

1. Urban Meyer. Pay him all the monies. People with his ego can’t bear the idea of leaving a coaching career in disgrace.

2. Gruden. Make the prophecy finally come true. I doubt most people even remember the scandal.

3. DeBoer- shouldn’t have stepped into Sabans shoes. An excellent coach but I think Bamas entire model was premised on cheating and Sabans cult of personality. I don’t think he lasts two more years if he doesn’t win big soon.

4. Lashlee. He’s the poor man’s choice but I like his approach to the game.

5. Give Cristobal an extension. Just accept he’s the best we are going to do. I think he might be able to make a playoff push in year 7 or 8.
Gruden ????? come on homie your better than this

Cristobal - he got his extension in the first contract lol

Texas A&M doesn’t have female cheer leaders.

They have a competition cheer leading squad that has women on it but at the football games it’s 100% dudes.
