Are we not going to talk about the Defense?

You can play the coulda, shoulda, woulda Game all day long on here. At some point you have to judge based on what actually happened.

If someone comes on here and talks about Mallory’s dropped two point conversion, the muffed punt, the miss chip shot field goals that make us 4-0 they are slammed as a blind homer.

That’s fine and I respect that because they didn’t get it done. But don’t turn around the next sentence and talk about plays other teams didn’t make.
I’m the last person to do that but it is what it is. Just keeping it a buck. I know we have narrow losses to uf/unc and should have won, no one is disputing that. But I also Didn’t like seeing guys from a group of 5 school consistently getting that open vs this “defense” baker done concocted up

100%. Because we KNEW the o-line was likely to struggle. Everyone (myself included) touted our DEs as being some incredible unit this year. Hands down the most disappointing personnel group based on preseason expectations. It's not even close.
I hear you. But I've stated for months most were underestimating the impact of losing Willis. I was told, no worries, we have Nesta. Add to that a green secondary. Again, no worries, we have our best CB (Bandy) and Hall Blades and Ivey were ballers.

I expected the line to be a problem but I don't think anyone thought they'd be this historically bad. Against CMD, the DE treated Nelson like a turnstile and frequently got to Williams within 3 seconds. Even in the spread is not going to help in that extreme.

that is a misleading number
bc in situational football, where our defense had to make a play, it failed miserably
for example it doesn't matter how many points the defense gives up if it cant stop 4th and 17 to basically win the game

How can actual points allowed be a misleading number?

Because they gave up a 4th and 17?

Ok

Ok

that number is misleading bc it does not tell you the full story about massive short comings of our defense
if that stat makes you feel good about the defense then go ahead
I hang my hat on the fact that when the game was on the line and it was 4th and 17 the defense came up short and lost the game

Even more than the offensive line?
There was a thread a few months back where we were talking abut Offensive expectations. I said I didn't expect us to be more than one touchdown better per game compared to last year, so my hopes for the Offense were always tempered (although I didn't think Enos would be this boring).

I expected some drop off at D-Tackle, but I had no idea or expectation that the D-Ends would be this bad. It's kind of shocking.

If not for two terrible self inflicted TOs inside our 35 yard line by UF they score at least another 6 points. If not for a hugely fortunate stumble by the UNC receiver who burned Romeo Finley with no help up top he walks into the endzone for another 4 points. If not for CMU being CMU they don't have nearly as many drops as they had, all of which were not difficult catches and with plenty of room to run.

A halfway competent offense is going to tear this defense apart.
Not disagreeing. They need to work on stuff, notably being out of position in the secondary too much for my taste. They need to tighten up.

Still, you can say "If Thomas doesn't muff the punt at the four, you can take 7 points off the gator scoreboard" "If the referees don't throw five flags on CMU's scoring drive, they don't get any points". A lot of things can change "If" only a few things go in a different direction.

The way I see things, losing a tackle as dominate as Willis played changes the dynamic of the whole line. If you don't have to worry about an inside rush, the offense can provide help on the edges. Add to that the ends playing contain a lot, trades off getting after the QB to limiting the run. Not to mention we don't have LBs that scrape down and cover the edges.

We can question the scheme, but overall, except for some dumb penalties, I don't believe the defensive line is the reason we are where we are.

Ford has been solid. He isn't a great pass rushing DT but he plays the run well and has shown a few flashes of.pushing the pocket.

You can talk about a lot of guys but you are WAY off base with talking about the DTs. They are controlling the LOS of playing the best run D I have seen from our DL in years. Ford and Bethel and Miller have been lights out against the run. That makes up for whatever they are lacking pass rush wise. Lets not get too carried away here .

Chigozie and Miller tandem > Ford and Bethel

I WAS ABOUT TO LIGHT GARVIN *** UP LAST GAME BUT I WATCHED HIM THEY'RE BLOCKING HIM WITH THE GUARD AND CHIPPING WITH THE BACK ON A LOT OF PLAYS. THEY KNOW HE'S ALL WE GOT SO AT ALL COST THEY'RE NOT LETTING HIM BEAT THEIR TACKLES.

HE'S BEING TRIPLE BLOCKED ON MANY PLAYS .

Que the "Our defense is overrated. Our defensive stats are misleading. We haven't played a real offense all year. If we ever did this defense would get EXPOSED BIG TIME! Trust me!" crowd. Yall have been saying this same **** for the last 3-4 years about our defense and now that we are back to the middle of the pack as far as defense is concerned you long for the defenses we had the last few years that yall bytched every week was overrated. Make a choice...

Don’t listen to the idiots you’re right to crap on the D. Trust your eyes and your eyes say this is going to get exposed by ACC teams. Lucky they dropped a bunch of balls and lucky franks is so bad at QB or the numbers would be worse.
My only point of contention is we did run just as much cover 1 (or close to it) under Diaz at times it was our staple but the 3 down lineman sending safety blitzes is fireable right there. No D flashbacks
