This one is huge, and IMO the biggest reason for our crappiness over the last two decades - Over 20+ years, the U has been operating at an X's and O's deficit in almost every single game in every single season. Think about the coordinators we've had over the years, you can count on one hand how many have been even just above the line, much less good. ****, Paul Johnson won this conference with an offense derived from schemes created when guys had nicknames like "Irish" and "Spanish flu survivor."4. Quality coordinators on both sides of the ball.
This is a major reason we’re finally playing complimentary football. Heatherman has already gotten his flowers in this thread, and Dawson continues to improve year after year.
Both coaches are excellent at simplifying things while still having the ability to out-scheme opponents. Mario has finally built a complete, high-quality staff.
Our record over 2 decades is hovering around .500, but we've have had more talent than almost every team we've faced (whether you want to count it by incoming [recruiting rankings] or outgoing [NFL draft picks]). I'm not saying we had enough to compete for national titles, so anyone chiming in with that can take the strawman back to your bed to have *** with. I'm talking strictly finishing .500 or worse in the dogwater division in the dogcrap conference we played in, where we have as many conference title game appearances as Duke and SMU, and fewer than Pitt, GT, Wake and BC.
