Are things different ?

4. Quality coordinators on both sides of the ball.
This is a major reason we’re finally playing complimentary football. Heatherman has already gotten his flowers in this thread, and Dawson continues to improve year after year.

Both coaches are excellent at simplifying things while still having the ability to out-scheme opponents. Mario has finally built a complete, high-quality staff.

This one is huge, and IMO the biggest reason for our crappiness over the last two decades - Over 20+ years, the U has been operating at an X's and O's deficit in almost every single game in every single season. Think about the coordinators we've had over the years, you can count on one hand how many have been even just above the line, much less good. ****, Paul Johnson won this conference with an offense derived from schemes created when guys had nicknames like "Irish" and "Spanish flu survivor."

Our record over 2 decades is hovering around .500, but we've have had more talent than almost every team we've faced (whether you want to count it by incoming [recruiting rankings] or outgoing [NFL draft picks]). I'm not saying we had enough to compete for national titles, so anyone chiming in with that can take the strawman back to your bed to have *** with. I'm talking strictly finishing .500 or worse in the dogwater division in the dogcrap conference we played in, where we have as many conference title game appearances as Duke and SMU, and fewer than Pitt, GT, Wake and BC.

Not to nitpick but I don’t think it has had anything to do with handling success

We just weren’t a good all around football team. We didn’t have trap games or let downs because we weren’t prepared or got ****y

We just had glaring weaknesses that caught up with us
Yeah I think too many losses for fans get filed under not being prepared but honestly in college football it’s hard to make an in season adjustment when you’re hanging on for dear life on one side of the ball. Like Cal was a precursor to gtech but as a head coach in season personnel overhauls are hard cause it’s not like you have assistants with play calling experience beyond your coordinator. Like if coach O was an analyst last year maybe Mario makes an in season adjustment

There are a lot of contributing factors here:

-veteran QB who’s played a lot of ball
-veteran guys and difference makers in the trenches
- a punishing run game
- good depth
- good coordinators

I think we are also seeing the byproduct of a good culture and leadership. Kids who upset the apple cart get dismissed (ZP and MW).
Like that’s the thing yes Mario deserves game day criticism but I feel like we take what he does well for granted and that’s the harder part of his job actually like why didn’t ND replace Leonard? Why is Ohio state rolling with talented inexperience at qb? Mario checked that box easily

When everyone says over the past 25 years, I cringe because it’s not like we had the same coach in the same administration over that time things have changed. The one constant was we weren’t investing in the program like every time someone says oh we haven’t won the ACC since joining the conference like if that’s one coach’s fault that we haven’t fired. It’s been more of an administrative failure than a coaching failure

Something that needs cleaned up:

Three weeks in a row our DL has done an excellent job forcing right-armed QBs to run for their life to the left only to find a wide-open receiver down field for huge gains on the right side of secondary. It didn't really "hurt" us last night or with BC, but did cause some pain in the ND game with the TD. I realize we can't ask our secondary to be lock-down for 15-20 seconds, but these receivers have caught passes with nobody within 10 yards of them. It's been different guys each time, but it has to stop.
i was yelling at the tv when they hit that guy again. Said the same thing. Same play. Guy standing alone with no defender even close

our guys look like their having fun
they look like they know they are simply better
and they are playing like alphas finally

what made Miami truly great is when greentree practices were harder then the game
thats where we are at

i bet you our WRs getting pressed by lucas, oj, scott all week is harder than any DBs they have faced
(btw lucas is locking down everybody, you never hear his name when hes on the field)
you think francis has faced better edges than bain and mesidor and vice versa
the reason our lines can dominate any other line is bc were finally at that point where we can say practices truly are harder then the game

i never thought mario could actually do it
but he has
thats why this team feels looks and plays different

I want to see when they get punched in the mouth or in a tough environment . How they recover . That’s another step.
We’ve shown we dominate the LOS and good luck running against our front. Guys like Jakobe, Toure, and Scott really bring a level of physicality we haven’t had in a while.

I still have some questions mainly regarding our safeties against a better vertical passing attack.

Biggest takeaway for me: Our ENTIRE TEAM has an identity. Not a few players & not one side of the ball, but our entire team. We methodically execute our gameplan behind a culture of physicality and grit. After 20+ years of wondering how we can overcome deficiencies, I think I finally see a team that can just play its game, impose its will, and let the other team figure out how to overcome their deficiencies.

Absolutely correct. The trap was that we got suckered into a belief that "we were back".

the problem that I have is the issues that

I'm not worried about this team getting up for the big games. it's the ones in November where Miami may be undefeated going in looking down on teams and wanting no part in going out in playing in game that's 30 degrees out or **** weather. Will the leaders of the group keep this team focused on the goal and not allow for slips that have happened to other teams in the past
I've never understood the weather thing. We've had guys move on and kill it Buffalo, Green Bay etc.

Maybe take the kids who"ve never been out of So Fla to northern Mn during the second off week. And don't bring any coats.

We had a couple hiccups on defense with getting aligned but honestly to me Golesh seemed so desperate to make something happen that he cared more about getting us a penalty or catching us off guard than making an actual play
It was as if he saw with his own eyes the size and athleticism we displayed early, and often, in the game. I think then he realized he was screwed.

Extremely encouraged by this start.

- Tackling is better on defense.
- Communication on defense is light years better.
- Bain looks like a top 5 pick and we hit on Blay.
- Moten improved and has pushed Justin Scott to quality depth
- Keionte Scott is one of the top nickels in the country
- Tons of freshmen and 2nd year guys contributing
- Beck really good decision-making (for the most part)
- WRs are getting better each game.
- Kicking game is better than we thought (although hopefully we don't kick much this year)
- Samson has hit a breakthrough and is one of our top OL in pass pro
- Fletcher learning to run hard through contact
- Fast starts in general allowing our defense to be aggressive and our offense to settle in.

There’s so much more I can put in, but like Cribby said…these next two games will tell us a lot. Lose to UF or FSU, and it’s all for naught.

FSU is going to be a classic. Looking like it’s going to be a 3-4 pt spread. I want that gimmicky offense put in a blender, I want Castellanos to break in half.

But first, need to take care of a wounded, but dangerous UF team. They’ve only allowed 2 offensive touchdowns in three games, With Banks back at DT, they’re a good defense - undisciplined, but talented. Let’s get them reeling early and make Lagway chase…that’s when he gets into trouble. Pushing the ball downfield in a negative game script.

I believe he reinjured his foot (perpaps a fracture) and will miss the game. Big break (no pun intended) for the good guys.

Good post.

Banks is out per the HC

Yesterday’s game was jarring to me. In the best way. That game was never close. Not even for :10 of game time. There was never a point where we didn’t look bigger, stronger, or faster. Beck was in control. The OL is so dominant that it looks almost fake. Every position plays with urgency and physicality on both sides of the ball. I don’t think we even played our best game and it was an absolute laugher. It felt the same way in the stadium vs ND, too. The score was closer than the game. I am excited to see what happens this year
Beck had that Cam Ward moment where he had so much time he kinda softly stepped to the right because he had so much protection.
