Are Older Lbs Going To Get Pushed Out?

Not sure how this coaching staff does thing but past coaching staffs always raved about the younger guys and when the depth chart came out during the fall it typically contained the older guys. The term "Greentree All-American" didn't become a stigma for nothing. Maybe Richt is different but he will find out this fall.

You have to throw out anything we heard from the last 3 staffs. The only kid Diaz is raving about is Grace. After that not so much. The three amigos come in this spring very heralded so they are going to play this fall. That being said the true freshman are learning so every day they'll get more comfortable in this defense.

You mean the Golden "under the radar" evaluations aren't working out?

Noooooo!!! :Y-u-no:

In all this talk of LB depth and the new guys bringing it and the obvious JAGs like Smith and McCray being passed up there has been zero mention of Charles Perry. Where does Perry fit in here? Is he also a jag? Does he belong at UM or not? I don't know much about him.

It's not a big deal right now because it's spring ball. The coaches already have film on the older guys. The spring really give the coaches a chance to move the younger guys to the front to see what they really have in terms of talent and depth (import for a new staff to do). Come fall if the older LB are not making plays then you will know that they are being passed over.

I doubt that...considering the older LB's have no experience in this system and needs to learn it just as much as the new guys do.
I sorta agree with this a bit more... cuz it's open season, especially at this position. No doubt in my mind Shaq will be a permanent starter! The kid has special talent...also looks like Pickney and Mcloud both have a chance to be in the full rotaiton. Our upperclassman had better perform at a much higher level than before or they will get surpassed. IMO

If we are in fact changing to something that resembles our old 4-3, Golden's image of an LB is out the window. Grace is more like our old LBs -- smaller, fast and aggressive. Al loved small Dlinemen moving back to LB. Our old system was more larger safeties moving forward. Speed forward. If were are to return, that will be the new norm. Shaq has the look of true MLB in 4-3, maybe a little bigger than some of our old ones.
I think you're right that's why Diaz is high on them. Also, most fans need to understand true freshman start everywhere these days. Like you said "change".....should be expected when a new staff takes over. I believe Shaq starts while the other two have a strong chance to be in the rotaion.

•With Darrion Owens out, UM coaches seem less than thrilled with the other veteran linebackers except Jermaine Grace, of course. Peter Ariz noted that early enrollees Shaquille Quarterman and Mike Pinckney played with the first team (with Grace) at Saturday's scrimmage.

Doesn't seem like a guy like young who a lot of people has hyped up has impressed the staff. Wouldn't be surprised to see mccray and smith get pushed out.

I guess they might bring in 3 this year to replace the older guys.

Dude come August there will be no better position to watch competition wise then the LB position with Owens, Young,Perry, Grace, Shaq , Pinckney and Zach. This is going to be open warfare for 3 spots. I would love to see all of August camp just to watch this position grouping go at it. Lot of hungry guys fighting for their careers, cause if the freshman win out they may never let go of their positions.

Juwon Young is a balla

Since when? You going by high school or him making tackles 10 yards down the field last year?

Every game I saw Juwon Young play, he stood out kid is all over the field. 3 double digit tackle games, caught a int against VT, forced a fumble against GT. He's a stud, just needs some more polishing.

Agree on Young's potential. The kid should be a RS-Soph, except for the terrible roster management of the prior staff.

i got ripped on here when i made a remark about young's offer list scaring me. This could also be the staff pushing them harder.
what surprised me is hearing gordinier getting alot of reps. i expected perry but not him.

Gordinier is so much better than the typical U fan knows. He will make some noise when called on. Perry is a special trainer. I bet you see him at FB eventually?

He is a redshirt sophmore
Edit: just checked, he's a junior

He was wasted on special teams as a freshman. Absolutely no reason for him to have played, IMO ... Other than they, likely, promised not to red-shirt him.

The players can't think like that though. So many things change over time that can affect everything. Kids get injured and someone else comes in and never looks back. Also, remember one thing with these three young guys. IF and I say IF because we dont really know yet....but IF all three are really that good, there is NO CHANCE that all three are here for 4 full years. Let's be honest, many of these kids are not coming for the education. I am not saying ALL....just saying many are coming to make it to the NFL. If they are that good, at least one of them leaves after two years and enters the draft. You listen to Shaw and he is a smart kid. I am sure that kid is going to get his degree BUT what if the NFL comes calling and Mel Kiper says this kid is a sure bet first rounder. Then it becomes a no brainer.
So other kids get opportunities. What about a kid like Young. He is a RS Soph, right? So say Pinckney goes pro in two years and all of a sudden JY is starting his senior year. What about Gordinier and he may be the best example. He is a RS freshman. Two things can happen.....Say Shaq wins the MIKE position (all signs point that way) and plays for two years and then goes pro. Gordinier is then a RS Junior and probably 250+ by then and could have an excellent two years starting career. Maybe he puts on even more weight and goes to DE. Clearly he is in the mix so you know he can play.
What about Perry? Maybe he too grows or gets a chance his senior year? Maybe he becomes a running back or fullback? my point that I am trying to make is that so many things can change or happen. If a kid transfers that does not guarantee them anything. College is not all about football. Some of these kids may go 4-5 years and play some special teams, and get some time and never start BUT they may actually get their master's degree in 5 years. That is not such a bad thing if these kids love the school and are contributing to the football team. If it ends up someone isn't good enough, I think the coaches will let them know that.

You have to be in college for 3 years to declare bud.

Destroys all his hypotheticals. Dude's got our 3 freshmans LBs re-writing NCAA rules and leaving after 2 years because they're doing well in spring practice on a roster very thin at the LB position. Take a breath.

I'm all for new blood at the LB position. Last season's Defense couldn't stop Hellen Keller running the ball. If the new guys are a clear upgrade who cares?

I agree... w/ ^^^

At least U knew what I meant. These other dudes are too focused on the fact I was wrong about the years until edible for draft!
Your son did a great job in the press yesterday. Great to hear from people that Shaq, Gordinier ,Smith and McCray all help each other.
