Are Older Lbs Going To Get Pushed Out?

So our linebacker depth is terrible. Scary thing is our depth in the secondary is even worse...

It might be possible that this defense will be worse than the ones we fielded the last couple years

. I doubt the D will be any worse than #69 in the country...Coaching makes all the difference.

3 of our top 4 linebackers are freshmans, and we only have 2 servicable cornerbacks. Just my opinion but I think it'll be ugly

Taking things too seriously. Its been 8 practices and one Spring game. I remember the days when Thomas Finnie was our starting DB fresh out of MiaCen in Spring ball. Take this stuff with a grain of salt. If this were August then I would be concerned. Lets give guys like Owens and Young and full summer of lifting and working on the playbook before we throw them away.

But I like the fact that the 3 young'ns are in the mix and are not just "happy to be there".

It's not a big deal right now because it's spring ball. The coaches already have film on the older guys. The spring really give the coaches a chance to move the younger guys to the front to see what they really have in terms of talent and depth (import for a new staff to do). Come fall if the older LB are not making plays then you will know that they are being passed over.

I doubt that...considering the older LB's have no experience in this system and needs to learn it just as much as the new guys do.
I sorta agree with this a bit more... cuz it's open season, especially at this position. No doubt in my mind Shaq will be a permanent starter! The kid has special talent...also looks like Pickney and Mcloud both have a chance to be in the full rotaiton. Our upperclassman had better perform at a much higher level than before or they will get surpassed. IMO

If we are in fact changing to something that resembles our old 4-3, Golden's image of an LB is out the window. Grace is more like our old LBs -- smaller, fast and aggressive. Al loved small Dlinemen moving back to LB. Our old system was more larger safeties moving forward. Speed forward. If were are to return, that will be the new norm. Shaq has the look of true MLB in 4-3, maybe a little bigger than some of our old ones.

Another flaw/virus that must be corrected is fighting off blocks the right way. The entire defense needs to learn how to quickly dismantle blockers! Before.
.... they'd put hands on a blockers chest area then get pushed back 5 yards allowing the runner to easily reach the second level .......or flatout get knocked on their *** allowing the runner to break! I guess younger kids like Shaq and Pickney don't have that mindset so...... maybe the staff is favoring their raw aggressiveness over the slower vet mindset still waiting on the virus scan to finish? Or like another poster said.....maybe the staff is giving them a strong look? My guess is....it's a little bit of both. "If"... the older kids don't improve fast enough, they will indefinitely lose ground in the rotation.

What happening is what Richt said in the beginning of spring. Generally the players with the most experience in the playbook play. Everything is new and fresh, the old players have to scrap everything they were taught. The freshman are learning it all for the first time it's a level playing field so the superior talent will play because everyone's experience is about the same with the playbook.

This is really the point of the day regarding this thread.

You think the field is level between Kaaya and Allison? It should be if we're using this flawed logic that you're espousing.

The field should not be level between a guy who should be in HS and a guy who has been in a D1 program for 2 or 3 years already. They're both learning a new playbook, but the guy who has been in a D1 program for 2 or 3 years should have a dramatic advantage over a guy who should be in HS. If it's level it's only because the guys who were already here are so terrible that they got bytch slapped by some 17 year old HS seniors.

Very shocked to see account make a dumb statement like this. All the new accounts on here have been so legit.

I'm sure he'll mention something along the lines of "We'll be lucky to win 7 or 8 games this year" any minute now.

I most excited to see what a healthy Owens can do in this system. He was a savage beast in his film.

I partially agree with you. All I was stating was that with new coaches brings a new system. Those 2-3 year D1 athletes have been taught a different system for the last three years (read and react). Now the 2-3 year guys are learning something new, same with the freshman. Yes, the others shouldnt be passed by freshman, they should be acclimated to college speed and they have gameday experience but they also had the Golden UFat program for S&C. The freshman are coming in motivated and ready to learn (a sponge of knowledge one might say) and had the advantage of beginning a true college S&C program (probably had less bad weight burn than the 2-3 year guys). I truly believe that Quarterman will be the only freshman starter for the LB core but the others will be in the rotation. So calm down with your flawed logic, just because someone should be in highschool compared to someone who has been on campus for a little while as an argument over athletic ability is dumb. You start the better player and in this case the freshman get an equal shot because everyone is learning a new system.

I usually don't agree with Francis but you guys would start every freshman class if you could.

I think we actually have pretty good depth at LB. Young is a good LB, but more of a MLB IMO. The fact that they switched him and Gordinier surprised me. I always thought of Gordinier as a guy who would outgrow LB and end up as a DE. That may still happen. Hope we see more real game situations in the Spring game.

Glad to see someone state their opinion , it's not childish

Not even close to the point I was making.. Quite the opposite actually

I wouldn't be shocked if the D isn't good, too many secondary holes and this type of defense will give up big plays every now an then

ACL tear. Ligament fuses at around 6 months. 8-10 months can be back after surgery. Then it depends on how well he moves around on it. Some people come back and don't miss a beat while others you see them back at their peak at about 14 months. Since we don't play anyone til October, I think he will be ready to go for the bulk of our schedule.
