•With Darrion Owens out, UM coaches seem less than thrilled with the other veteran linebackers except Jermaine Grace, of course. Peter Ariz noted that early enrollees Shaquille Quarterman and Mike Pinckney played with the first team (with Grace) at Saturday's scrimmage.

Doesn't seem like a guy like young who a lot of people has hyped up has impressed the staff. Wouldn't be surprised to see mccray and smith get pushed out.

I guess they might bring in 3 this year to replace the older guys.

Typically, one of four things happens, the staff finds new positions for them, the staff takes their scholarships (which rarely happens), they spend their careers as practice players, or after consulting with the staff they elect to transfer.

Most of those older LBs are JAGs, shaq pickney and mccloud actually have a ton of talent doesnt surprise me that they are starting so far

Need the older players with experience on special teams. We're still thin at many skill positions. Young and other backers will be needed even if they aren't starters on defense.

Considering we lost 2 starting LB's to injury last season, I would think this type of depth would be a welcome sight..

It's certainly better than anything we rolled out under Golden

Young played well when we needed him to last season. I expect him to do the same this year

I thought Young did a good job too. Especially against the run. The rest of the veterans (besides Grace) really haven't done much outside of some special teams work.

McCray and Smith just aren't that good.

i got ripped on here when i made a remark about young's offer list scaring me. This could also be the staff pushing them harder.
what surprised me is hearing gordinier getting alot of reps. i expected perry but not him.

It's not a big deal right now because it's spring ball. The coaches already have film on the older guys. The spring really give the coaches a chance to move the younger guys to the front to see what they really have in terms of talent and depth (import for a new staff to do). Come fall if the older LB are not making plays then you will know that they are being passed over.

I wasn't impressed with the LB core for most of last season. Poor angle tackling, didn't attack the ball aggressively, no rememberable plays against top competition etc... That said, most of the blame goes to the previous staff. IMO our newbies never had the virus it makes sense to see them playing loose aggressive football. If, our old heads can't adjust to this new scheme, it makes since to go with newbies that are just as strong, more athletic, faster and most important..... learning without a "virus." When Owens comes back it's going to be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

Smith to me is a DE. Not a LB. But there might not be a role in this defense for him at DE.

McCrary is a DE too. Thats what he played at Ely and had 30 sacks in two years. But again..just might not be a role here for him at that position. They def are not LBs.

But I cant see why they cant be pass rushing LBs like the role they are using for Pinckney. Unless he is just that much better then them at it or they cant do that very good either. Which in that case they really have no role except ST.

They don't look like quick twitch guys at all. Smith did in HS when he was 40 pounds lighter and had healthy knees. McCray didn't ever look like a quick twitch guy. Can't see them ever being starting caliber guys on a top 25 team. Hopefully they contribute on STs & get their degrees.

McCray and Smith may look around but most of our LB's are young with the exception of Grace. Owens will be a Rs Sophomore this season.

Juwon is from Georgia and he couldn't get a Georgia offer, though he wanted one.

That's a bad back story when the coach who wouldn't offer you becomes your coach.

LB recruiting under fheg was horrible. He got denzel and grace by sheer luck otherwise he wanted big fat slow lbs

It appears Young may have missed his UGA offer because they were concerned with him qualifying ...

UGA may have felt there were comparably talented kids without qualifying issues ...

I received much pressure to put Juwon Young on this list and honestly he should probably be on it. However, I see him and Detric Dukes as very similar players, but I think Dukes has a better chance at qualifying and therefore you can be more confident that linebacker spot will stay filled post signing day in the 2014 class. Yes, the state of Georgia alone will produce some elite talent this year with names like Raekwon McMillan, Bryson Allen-Williams, Korie Rogers and Juwon Young, but Detric Dukes is just as good as those players.

So, I think Young is still in the mix for PT.
