Are “we” overconfident?

I just got through reading a piece about a forecast for the season, and it has us going six and three in the ACC and losing to Duke in the championship. I’ve also read quite a few quips where they think Stanford can upset Miami.
So I got to thinking, are we overconfident? What am I missing? This seems like our strongest team in, dare I say, decades.

At a school like Miami the roster should basically be stacked every year which is what Mario has restored, so really the ceiling of the team is set by the QB. The QB this year is an NFL prospect getting picked as the Heisman favorite by pundits, Heisman tier QB = championship expectations.

I think Miami has a better roster than ND tbh. Miami has the better weapons without debate and the better DL, ND are elite at DB and LB. Mensah v Carr is a debate I guess but I'll take Mensah.

Tengwall says ND's OL is #1 in CFB so we will see how they do against Moten et. al.

Also, the only Miami transfer that actually did anything so far is Popo Aguirre (NC State). All of the others that have played thus far have been duds or buried in the depth chart with no chance of breathing playing time. We have upgraded in each of those lost roster spots (minus Aguirre - his pass coverage was subpar but on run D, elite). Another reason to trust the staff on this roster. Too much PTSD from 20+ years of being cat **** seeping into the fanbase still. That's gotta stop.

There were big moments in big games where Bain and Mesidor shut the door for the opponent. There’s no arguing that.

On the flip side it’s fair to say our secondary, backer and interior play will be a step up from last year. No more 15 yard freebies from Blay and the like and the young bucks becoming men inside will be upgrades.

I think the fairest way to put it is this defense will be very good but different as well.

Agree! We don't need a Bain and Mesi, as much, with the back end we have this year as well as the interior of the DL being that much deeper and bigger than last year. We still have speed and elite athleticism at DE to make a huge impact on containment and wrecking OL's this year. Our "questionable" group would be LB (in pass coverage only) but that gets quickly corrected with the huge interior line and elite back end to lock up the OL and WR's. Basically, allowing for Toure and Smith to do what they do best, run stop and get after the QB on blitz'. Our D will be better because we have more players contributing at high levels like Bain and Mesi had to last year.

Good starting point, HOWEVER, in the modern landscape, I find predicting QB play harder than ever. Scheme/Fit/Situation matters so much and we have a million examples of it (Nix, Penix, Mendoza, Cam, Beck, Travis, etc. on the good side; Nussmeier, Klubnik, Allar, etc. on the bad side just last season)

There's every possibility that, for example, Davis Warren ends up putting together a Tyler Shough-like season....might happen, might not, wouldn't be a total shocker. Same with the BC kid that is transferring up...he's probably not great, but Trinidad Chambliss was a backup to start last season and now I think he is the best college QB in the country.

Yeah was rewatching OSU the other day

What Bain and Mesidor did, you gotta kinda watch it a few times to really get it to sink in

Bains game rivals Sean Taylor’s in the rain against FSU

He created the havoc that caused Scott’s pick 6 (not to take away what Scott did). He caused Sayin to miss the wide open TE on the play before it for a TD right in front of his face. He was simply unblockable in the 4th quarter when OSU needed to make a comeback

Not sure we have guys that can single handedly take over like that but collectively the defense is loaded. And you never know. Guys like Blount and Wilson were 5 start all world types for a reason

Completely agree and that’s why I used the term different.

But the element of having the two best ends, who could go inside at times as well and take over a game is a big void to fill. Looking forward to and optimistic what we will see though.

I’m with you for sure

Also really like the versatility we have with Scott and Moten having the middle locked

Someone like Keona Davis with his skill set I think could be very disruptive with how Heatherman throws some wild fronts together

Agree.

Hetherman will get more out of his resources than just about anyone else. Obviously plenty of talent to work around so I have little concern.

It's also Hethermans second year installing his defense, with a lot of the same dudes that were here last year so it won't be too much for them if he wants to get more creative with the defense.
