AQM Suspended for the 2014 season

Suspended a whole semester for a ****ing fight?

This wouldn't happen at a school that gave a **** about its football program.

you sound like a Ray Rice fan.. it's all about the football and forget being responsible for your own actions

You sound like a douche.

This is the only case I've ever heard of where a kid with no priors is suspended an entire year for a fight.

Exactly, it's the only case. So clearly there is something more to this that warranted that reaction. Other students and other athletes have gotten less. They didn't just randomly decide that AQM would get more, there's a reason for it. But the university cannot talk about it, so you get to speculate and invent. Just like when it comes to recruiting and we here all of these silly stories that some recruits say about various schools when they don't get as much attention as they want, and the school has to just silently take it.

Can we stop with the "football players need to be treated like regular students" bull****? No they shouldn't, and at every other major (successful) program but here, they aren't.

No one had any problem with kicking out sickos like Figueora, but something as petty as this? An event that would get you a quarter suspension anywhere else? We are ******* doomed.

If the student code of conduct calls for a particular punishment, then being a student, yes, they must and should be treated the same.

Coincidentally, you're speculating and inventing here.

Also, does the school have to remain quiet and take it? Assuming this isn't academic, is there a statute that requires confidentiality in the event of disciplinary rulings? I'm not aware of that. Seems like schools comment on discipline all the time.

ND kicked its best player out for a year for cheating. It happens when code of conduct matters arise.

also didnt BYU lose one of their best players on the basketball team bc he violated the student code of conduct, as well? (this happened a couple years ago tho)

it was brandon davies and he was suspended for having *** with his girlfriend when the team was 27-2 and had jimmer wrecking the college basketball world. national title hopes disappeared overnight.

edit: suspended, not expelled.

don't make it a racial thing. the same thing applies to everyone at that school and she just happens to be white while he happens to be black.

Stick this in your "the same thing applies to everyone" pipe and smoke it.

I live in this godforsaken state. It's no secret round here about how minorities get treated at BYU.

interesting read, but an article written by someone with an ax to grind against byu, who singularly sources other people with grudges against byu, is hardly objective. the guys who "didn't know" about the honor code but signed anyway? that's on them. i don't believe for a second that they weren't educated on it because byu needs to keep players eligible to compete by university standards. utah sucks as it is and going to a mormon epicenter is a choice that they made on their own, especially going as a non-mormon.

that being said, that's just what the article looks like to me. since you live there and it's a known thing then i really can't comment further on it because you have more perspective than i do.

Agreed. But it would have been nice for them to silmply try and put on the act of not having a racist double standard at their university.

They don't even try to hide it.

i added a little addendum to my previous comment.

do you think there's a chance that it may be more because black mormons are kind of a rare thing and that prejudice stems from differing religious values, rather than race? because i've met my share of polynesian mormons and they seemed to get along pretty well with white mormons.

Without turning this into a religious discussion. Short answer is that the mormon church was racist in doctrine from the onset. Just google "mormons and black people". It's all out there.

interesting. i'll give it a look.

I hope he stays, but who would w/ this clown *** admin. We are not Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown or any of these other elitist east coast schools. We have a solid, top tier educational staple in America, but people still know us b/c of us being the U...our football program. You can't continue to trash the thing that's made us world renown, man. This is becoming ever frustrating.

theyre not trashing the football program. AQM violated the student code of conduct that every STUDENT must adhere to. if you dont, you deal w the consequences. you can't bend the rules for a select few. the football players and other athletes already get plenty of benefits that normal students do not. If he had just not broken a kids nose (regardless of the situation), he'd still be playing football right now. follow the rules, stay on the field. its really not that difficult. also, its a good lesson for him to learn in the future. the mature thing isn't to beat someone up if something occurs. hopefully he comes back in the spring and is hungry come next fall. take your aggression out on the field, not off the field.

Sounds good in theory. Reap what you sow. The thing is the consequence is a little over board. It is all about some fake image to me. The punishment should fit the crime.

IMG_0066.webp this is what can happen if you violate the code of conduct. we dont know what shape the kid was in outside of the broken nose since we dont have any pictures post beating and we dont know the full story since witnesses gave conflicting stories to the school about AQMs self defense claim. it seems like AQM went overboard though judging by the punishment.

1. AQM can blame nobody but himself. He has to be smarter.

2. I personally witnessed the brawl at FSU between some Sigmas, and some WRs. That brawl included
-The players starting the brawl by jumping a Sigma
-at least 10 people
-a girl with a broke nose after being hit by a chair
-a girl punched in the face after trying to break it up
-players throwing Sigmas down stairs
-two players arrested for
misdemeanor assault......Yet, all of the players involved received a one game suspension, while the Sigmas fraternity was not recognized for 2 years. This means either Golden has no influence, or the administration is full of people who are absolute jackasses. Probably both

pat whitely (vp who handled this case) is one of the worst administrators that i've ever been around in my life, as a student and as someone that works in higher ed. when i was a student, she sent me a cease-and-desist letter when i was trying to raise money for the va tech victims fund after the massacre because it was undermining the university's measly $10,000 donation. **** pat whitely.

Lol this would never happen

You would only get issued a cease and desist letter if you were using the University's name or brand without permission.

except for the time that it did. the plan was to make shirts and have the proceeds donated to vt and it was all handled through a facebook group. i got paul dee to approve the use of the u, which was still expressly under the athletic department's control back then. va tech's people asked me to get a student org to sponsor me so they could release their logo for use. then pat whitely sent me a wonderful email that told me to stop. i had to go through dean singleton to reach a compromise where the shirts with my design would help pay for the candlelight vigil.

if you were there in the spring of 2007, you may recognize this. 500 were printed, sold at $10 a piece, and they sold out within 2 hours. the proceeds of that were 1/4 of the university's total contribution.

I was there in the spring of 2007, and distinctly remember this. Good work.

None of you have any idea how bad the fight was. What if he really ****ed the other kid up?

How would you feel if a football player beat the **** out of your son, brother? UM probably had a lot of pressure from the roommates family (lawsuit, etc).

Rapes
Arrests
Multiple players assaulting students
Alcoholics
Robbery
Failed drug tests

Has Al Golden lost control of the progrum?

/no way a player at a school that cares about football gets suspended an entire year for a fight

I'm pretty sure that it's a code of conduct issue and there is nothing the athletic department can do about the decision.

Stop, you're making too much sense.

Anyone that thinks AG wanted this is a straight up imbecile.

You do stupid things, you pay the price. Happy we have him next year. Move on and hope the next guy can produce.
