Any questions for a UGA fan about Richt in general?

I appreciate the extra info from the Georgia fans. I'll admit, I only casually paid attention to UGA football so it's good to hear some perspective from guys who know their team. I do root for the Bulldogs at least once a year though, when they play the gators in Jacksonville.

Yes '10 was richt's worst season. He was told he needed to win at least 9 games in '11 or he would be fired and he won 10 and the east so he stayed for a while. We went 6-7 that year including some inexcusable losses (mainly the bowl loss to UCF, 10-6. That team had aaron murray and AJ Green and put up 6 on UCF).

Which reminds me of another thing....early in his tenure probably the BIGGEST complaint people had was his unwillingness to put the nail in the coffin and put teams away. We had a string of FG kickers that would set a new SEC record taht was held by his precedessor because if we bogged down it was an automatic FG. No thought to going for it. However...in later years he got far more bold. Trick plays, onside kicks, going for it on 4th and short...we probably saw more of that in his last 5 years than we did in his first 10 combined.

I'm really hoping that he takes all the negatives from UGA and learned from them and corrects them while in miami.

Was Richt sleep walking through the second half of his time at UGA? Sounds like he got complacent and to a certain degree lazy. I don't think that will be the case at least not for the first few years.

Whats his history of beating teams that are more talented during his tenure at UGA? Since we have to face FSU I figure they will be more talented as I believe Jimbo is a better recruiter than Richt.

Tough question. I think around 05 a bit of complacency did set in. A SMALL bit. Here was a guy who had never been a head coach and within 5 years won the SEC east 3 times, the SEC twice, played in 2 BCS bowls, etc. I think promoting Martinez in 05 for DC was a really bad move and ultimately led to the downfall of the defense the next sevearl years. As far as lazy...that's also hard ot answer. I haven't been side by side with richt during work hours so I dont' know how hard or not hard he worked. I don't think you can be a major college HC and be lazy. I think in the later years he may not have been as gung ho on the recruiting trail, but I wouldn't point to laziness as beign a reason for any particular losses or anything like that.

As for beating teams that were more talented, there weren't all that many teams that were flat out better/more talented than us during his tenure. A lot of our losses were to teams equal to us or worse and we just got outplayed. Here is a quick rundown of teams we played that were simply much better and/or more talented than us and the outcome:

15:
Alabama- 28 point loss

14:
Clemson(maybe? this team may have been our equal)- 24 point win

13:
@Clemson- 3 point loss
LSU- 3 point win
@Auburn- 5 point loss

12:
UF- 8 point win
Alabama- 4 point loss

11:
Boise St- 14 point loss
SC- 3 point loss
LSU- 32 point loss
MSU- 3 point loss (3OT)

10:
Almost everyone was more talented, 7 losses

09:
@Ok St- 14 point loss
LSU- 7 point loss
UF- 24 point loss
@GT- 7 point win

08:
Alabama- 11 point loss
Florida- 39 point loss

06:
Florida- 7 point loss
@Auburn- 22 point win
Gt- 3 point win

04:
@Auburn- 18 point loss

03: LSU- 7 point loss
LSU- 23 point loss

What do you think about the assistants he brought (or have UGA ties) over with him?

Basically what has been reported:

Felder: Well received so far. Huge improvement over Swasey (not saying much)
Brown: Excellent RB coach. OC title is just that, title. Strong assistant.
Richt Jr: Typical coaches son hire. Knows the system. QB coach in name only. Reliable. No issues here.
Hartley: Supposed bagman. Probably not. Certified creeper. I'd rather have Golden coaching my TE
Searles: Huge improvement over Kehoe (also not saying much). Seems like a solid hire. Maybe not elite

You conveniently forgot to mention Manny Diaz. The most important hire on the staff, as the coordinator on the side of the ball Richt doesn't have a background in. There has never been an assistant hiring I've hated more when the hiring was first made, except maybe when Golden rehired Kehoe. I didn't even hate the Nix and Donofrio hirings when they were first made, although I hated them within 6 games.

And unfortunately Richt may face some political problems if he tries firing Diaz, since his daddy is the former mayor of Miami.

This post will be one that I probably can't offer too much on.

Felder- no clue
Brown- Excellent hire. The guy has excelled playing RB at UGA, coaching at UGA, and again at Wisconsin. Great hire.
Richt Jr- no clue at all.
Hartley- who knows? He was a player personnel/recruiting guy at UGA, I don't even know if he's been a position coach before. But the guy knows recruiting.
Searles- not bad, not great. Been at Texas and UGA so obviously the guy isn't a bum.

Wow, this is kind of a sobering thread. No disrespect to WC_Dawg who's providing some great insights and specific examples. I'm hoping we aren't all setting ourselves up for disappointment this season and beyond.

Hmm not sure why this would be sobering. I definitely don't think yall will be disappointed in the short term future. I think everyone needs to realize that this is a brand new staff, new mindset, new basically everything. So no, you aren't going to the playoffs this year. No, you likely aren't winning the ACC this year. BUT, that's not reason to be down. I can almost guarantee that y'all will win the coastal within 3 years.

I think you're speaking out of turn about our prospects this season. We have a very legitimate chance to win the costal, can still win the ACC, and going to the playoffs is not impossible, because the season hasn't even started yet. Urban Meyer and Tom Herman fielded very competitive teams after taking them over and I expect nothing less with the caliber of players, coaching staff, and division Miami is in. Truth be told, the personnel fits Richt's system much more than it ever did Golden's. Appreciate the insight but let's stop at your familiarity with Richt's tenure at UGA.

BTW, I followed and was a big fan of FSU during Richt's tenure as OC, before he was hired at UGA. Back then, his fast-break offenses were the best i'd ever seen, college or pro. It was a beauty to watch at the college level with elements of power-spread, pro style, no-huddle, and I was surprised to hear UGA took him away from what he did best! Sounds like the "peter principle" in action. He's an offensive guru and, with Kaaya saying he's already mastered the offense, the sky is the limit. All due respect but you have no idea about our roster and what's about to come out of Coral Gables. However, I thank you kindly for your responses.

I've been very forthright about not knowing much about your team, but at the same time I'm realistic. New head coach, new coordinators, new systems to install on both sides...that's typically going to take some growing pains. Richt's first year here he went 8-4. Meyer's first year at UF he went 9-3. SAban's first at bama he went 7-6, his first at LSU was 8-4.

I'm not saying UM is going to suck, not at all. Just saying common sense would dictate it'll take a year for everyone to get on the same page.

Common sense...there isn't a whole bunch of that swirling around this site these days...
