Another what the college football playoffs should be thread

I’ll never support a playoff scheme that gives any team a bye. Play your way to championship.

8 team playoff is perfect, IMO.

Yeah, the playoff last year would have been soo much better with a PSU team that lost by 39 to michigan.

You don't get that teams grow and develop better as the season goes on? This is the exact reason we didn't play for the title in 2000. Computers decided that because we lost to Washington, around the 2nd game of the season, we didn't deserve a shot. We beat FSU, who did play for it and there's no team in the country at that point in time that would've beat us. Humans can see that and that's just our example from 17 years ago. We absolutely need to end committee bias and move to 8 teams.

Why 8 teams?

Under the current system, Miami would have made the playoffs in 2000 ...

I understand that but I feel there should be 5 champs, a team with an example like I gave above, where maybe that team lost to a good team and would be out of the top 4 (Washington played well and I think we were 3 or 4) and a non power 5 team like UCF this year. You have to have one more and there's always a team that fits the criteria and there can be very specific measures that have to be met.

theres an 8 team playoff that occurs during the last 4 weeks of the regular season, but its indirect so it functions like a soccer table. Expanding from 4 teams is meaningless and causes more problems than it fixes.

I missed this place.

Nowhere else on the internets can one get lost in the weeds so quickly.

the eventual solution is to have thee power 5 schools run their own show in football
this will lead to 4 conferences 2 divisions winners of division meet 8,4,2,1
i certainly do not need a committee that so far has no criteria or guidelines to selecting the teams.
get rid of all remnants of BCS group as well

I'd actually be for getting rid of the divisions within the conferences too. Spot on with the desire to minimize/eliminate the committee and their "eyetests" though.

People need to stop. We already arrived at the “solution.”

We don’t need Ohio State playing UCF and Auburn playing Miami for a shot at the title. None of those teams desereve a shot this year...so what exactly is this “solving” besides ruining the best regular season of any sport?

Neither does Alabama, so there's that.

Still say the conference champions should be the route to the playoffs.

Eliminates all shenanigans, and promotes tough OOC matchups.

Tired of OSU*, OU, Bama, etc getting automatic mulligans and a sure spot without winning their conference. Conference CGs shoulkd be the playoff qualifier.

If you are not a top 4 team, you do not DESERVE a shot at the title.

The playoffs has already ruined bowl season, and that's just with 4 teams.

Please don't ruin the best regular season in sports.

4 is ok because it prevents 2000 Miami from being jumped by Oklahoma and FSU....but I can't think of one time where I felt the #8 ranked team really deserved the ship.

Leave it at 4...MAX. Or go back to the old pre-BCS bowl structure and let the AP decide. But stop trying to ruin a great sport.

Actually, if you don't even make your conference title game you don't deserve to be in the playoffs. So yeah.

The “exact reason” we didnt play for the title in 2000 is because we didnt run up the score on ****** teams. Our only loss was to 11-1 Washington, and it was narrow. We didn’t lose by 39 points to a 10-3 michigan team, bud. Nor did we lose to an 8-4 team. Trying to draw parallels between that and Penn state last year is laughable.

You guys should stick to the NFL. Begging for more playoff spots for non-contenders. Terrible. Sad!

People can’t wait to ruin the best regular season in sports so that schools like Auburn and Wisconsin get shots at the title. Insane.

I normally agree with you but throw out the 4 vs 6 vs 8 arguments. Are you realllllly comfortable (especially as a Canes fan) with at its core a collection of inherently biased "experts" deciding this every year based on constantly changing criteria and their default "eye-test" rationale?

Sure, you can say that's what we had with the AP and even the BCS "computers" that were still influenced by human based/created polling but isn't THAT a major part of the reason so many people hated those systems?

At the end of the day I'm personally for anything that makes this a more objective process and severely limits subjective faux rationales. If that comes at a cost of mayyyybe letting in a perceived weaker team every once in a while then that's something I can live with. As I said before, it won't weaken the regular season and it certainly won't weaken what are seemingly meaningless conference championships now.

I think a lot of you guys arguing against expansion are doing it authentically but your biggest allies are also the biggest frauds on the matter- sports media and talk show hosts that absolutely love the attention, content and clicks that this manufactured controversy gives them every year.

We've been fvcked by the "polls" enough to know that the more teams in the playoffs the merrier.

We will end up owning that schit.

4 is enough. The only folks wanting 8 are the teams that didn’t win like they should have in the regular season. You want in? Just win.

College football is great because of the hyped regular season matchups. Those who don’t appreciate this and want to keep expanding have no appreciation for the regular season rivalries and matchups. Not to mention amateur athletes playing up to 16 games in a season is too much

Yes.

Have you EVER said to yourself "man the #8 team in the country really deserves a shot at this thing."

Nobody has ever said that. Because they don't. 8 teams will ruin college football. Better pray that never happens.
