Another great Beck breakdown

Interesting he said we have have WR’s this year that can take the top off the defense and didn’t have that last year. One of the biggest concerns by some of this years team was the WR room and that’s turned out to be, so far, a none issue.
Besides Beck the three biggest concerns have all come through so far.

DL
WR
DB's

success of the running game impacts that I think. Once the safeties creep in concerned about the run, our play action becomes much more effective to go over the top

SO FAR, those 3 groups have performed very well and the issues that were brought up have not been problems.
I think atm if we were looking for weaknesses it would be 1) Safety and the LB group 2) Bell's pass pro against more talented pass rushers with speed and power 3) ST execution. Maybe you could argue a more physically gifted complete #1 WR but Moore could be that in 5 or 6 games. Right now I think we have WRs that exhibit all the different elite traits but not one that can do it all except maybe Moore

This is splitting hairs though.

If Chase Smith can ascend it could be huge for the LB group. I dont think we have a Safety thay can unseat either Thomas or Poyser. I do like what Fitz is doing but hes not going to be a physical presence in that group

The other two issues I think are what they are and probably will not improve dramatically through this season.

I thought we caught the ball very well last year. We had some key drops here and there but in general were very reliable. I was genuinely concerned abiut that and the leadership of the room

Whelp cancel the **** out of both of those concerns

Linebacker was a bigger concern for me than DB. It’s not a great room and it just doesn’t have the talent to be great…but they are playing good enough. Chase Smith was shocking on Saturday. Toure has some Kiko in him where he just needs to go forward and he’s really good. Lance highlighted a great play in his breakdown showing how the communication is leaps and bounds ahead of last year (not saying much but still)

Carson is has always been one of the best QBs in the nation at play action.
His hiding of the ball down on the goal line for his TD scramble legit had everyone fooled. That will continue to be used to a great advantage once teams recognize it could be a hand-off, QB run, or pass. DEs won't just be able to crash in on the RB anymore, and if they do, they'll pay for it.

I’m not saying I believe it, but McShay and Stanford Steve were gushing about Bissainthe on McShay’s pod today, and he said talking to people in the league he thinks he may be a day 2 pick.

Again, I’ll believe it when I see it but that surprised me.

Mcshay sucks at evals.

Wes will make the nfl on measurables. He struggles with football IQ/instincts which will keep him out of day 2 and could see him as an UDFA

Not disagreeing. Just pointing it out. McShay wasn’t even the one that brought him up unprompted.

I got some **** on opening week for saying how thrilled I was with the play

Which was fair because frankly they weren’t very good BUT I saw some signs of major work put in during the offseason. Notre Dame was gonna cause us some huge issues. They would have torched us last year for many big plays.

It’s a work in progress and not sure they have a high ceiling but I’ve been seeing a lot to like when compared to years past

After the ND game I went from very concerned so feeling like they can hold up as long as health stays top notch and maybe a guy like Wiley continues to emerge

Part of the reason I said many months ago that this offense may be as good or better than last season is that Beck goes through his progressions. If he does not see anything open he goes to the outlet RB/TE. Or he just takes off and runs with a purpose.

Ward was fantastic but sometimes tried to play hero ball too much and make something out of nothing. Running around and at the last second being careless. We will not see much of that this season.
