New UM football policy limits available numbers for retail jerseys | Miami Herald Miami Herald

"University of Miami athletic director Blake James confirmed to the Miami Herald on Wednesday that UM’s new retail-jersey number policy will be to only produce one jersey with the current year and another with No. 1 – as in “We’re No. 1,’’ James said.

“This year is odd in that Brad Kaaya, obviously one of our most recognized names and players, is No. 15,’’ James said. “But it’s 15 for 2015 and No. 1 because we’re No. 1. Next year will be 16 and 1, the year after will be 17 and 1. The progression will continue for as far out in the future as you can see.’’

James said he implemented the change “because it makes sense"

Im sure people are gonna be lining up to get the punters number next year.

I think it's to prevent claims that the university is making money off of individual players likenesses. The N.W case plus the lawsuits that killed the ncaa games probably have everyone running scared.

I agree this is probably the reason. But the reason Blake James gave still confirms he is *****. The entire athletic department is a bunch of spineless losers.

the entire statement James gave was written by lawyers. His job was to read it verbatim.

This move, while being ****ty from a fan perspective, is actually being a head of the curve with the future landscape that is playing out with claims against the NCAA and Universities for profiting from players likenesses. This is a move that was suggested and made for legal reasons, and not one that was (or at least should not have been) made at the administrative level - though they had to agree to go along with the attorney's recommendation.

No it's not. It' s a retroactive move showing just how dumb our administration is and removed from the current landscape of sports. If they were smart, they would encourage the individual numbers of each individual player will be sold WITH EACH PLAYER being able to receive a portion of their jersey's sold how the NFL and NFLPA split fees with their players. When the Federal District Court of Appeals affirms the lower court decision of the O'Bannon case, and the Supreme Court denies certiorari, it will give UM the ability to recruit better and to actually pay its players in a legal capacity that the NCAA can't stop. By addressing this need now and not have this antiquated policy, it would help with recruiting as a financial incentive would be there for a player to legally be paid.

But go ahead and think that this policy is "good for the school." It's a terrible policy.

I'm getting a custom "6-7" with a tie on the front.

The transformation is complete. We are f*g**ts now.

We are the Caytlin Jenner's of NCAA football.

How about using players numbers, and even names, and when they are done with school they get a check for a percentage of what is owed them from sales? That way if someone like Kaaya gets injured this year and never plays again, he will at least get a cut from jersey sales. It would increase sales, and help the players as well. The fans would also get the merch they WANT.

Makes too much sense.
Exactly

Easbay had a sale on tons of canes nike gear a few months ago. I'd love to buy it ,but I refuse to spend another dime on a program that doesn't give two ***** about football.

No cash as long as Dough Paturdo roams the sideline

This program and the people that run it are just epically LAME in every phase. I definitely believe this university is totally committed to killing this football program altogether (but they want to do it while still grabbing every $ they can before the inevitable end when we are booted from the ACC). It is NAUSEATING to watch, especially when the alums and fans can't do anything to stop it.

Would be nice to keep the numbers and give the players a share of the jersey sales, but that requires contracts and collective bargaining and all that other ****. I think most teams will go this route. I can see the Alabamas of the world giving players a portion of jersey sales but that could be a slippery slope.

with that being said, Blake James is an incompetent ******

I heard Flake's wife tells him he too is #1 each night before she punches him in the face for not making her evening protein shake properly.
