New UM football policy limits available numbers for retail jerseys | Miami Herald Miami Herald
"University of Miami athletic director Blake James confirmed to the Miami Herald on Wednesday that UM’s new retail-jersey number policy will be to only produce one jersey with the current year and another with No. 1 – as in “We’re No. 1,’’ James said.
“This year is odd in that Brad Kaaya, obviously one of our most recognized names and players, is No. 15,’’ James said. “But it’s 15 for 2015 and No. 1 because we’re No. 1. Next year will be 16 and 1, the year after will be 17 and 1. The progression will continue for as far out in the future as you can see.’’
James said he implemented the change “because it makes sense"
Im sure people are gonna be lining up to get the punters number next year.
I think it's to prevent claims that the university is making money off of individual players likenesses. The N.W case plus the lawsuits that killed the ncaa games probably have everyone running scared.
I agree this is probably the reason. But the reason Blake James gave still confirms he is *****. The entire athletic department is a bunch of spineless losers.
This move, while being ****ty from a fan perspective, is actually being a head of the curve with the future landscape that is playing out with claims against the NCAA and Universities for profiting from players likenesses. This is a move that was suggested and made for legal reasons, and not one that was (or at least should not have been) made at the administrative level - though they had to agree to go along with the attorney's recommendation.

the entire statement James gave was written by lawyers. His job was to read it verbatim.
ExactlyHow about using players numbers, and even names, and when they are done with school they get a check for a percentage of what is owed them from sales? That way if someone like Kaaya gets injured this year and never plays again, he will at least get a cut from jersey sales. It would increase sales, and help the players as well. The fans would also get the merch they WANT.
Makes too much sense.
The transformation is complete. We are f*g**ts now.
We are the Caytlin Jenner's of NCAA football.

They don't want to get sued.
