An overlooked improvement

28 points in regulation and I really dislike our pass blocking, especially on the right side of the line.

This is twice where Mensah looked rattled (Wake & FSU). This past week, just bad all the way around until Q4.

Are they really satisfied with that side of the line? It seems we are collapsing on that side forcing Mensah to his left and thus, struggling to throw against his body.

What has the re-watch or all 22 show?
Against that 91st ranked FSU defense per SP+ at that

We really could have 5-7 yarded FSU to death. Very ***, as in "bad," NTTIAWWT.

there are two problems. dawson designs long developing routes (yes, with a checkdown) and mensah fails to throw the easy peasy dink and dunk. it was available all game. by the way, in the second half, dawson called more plays with faster developing routes.

if he took what is given to him, we would have routed FSU

This is the biggest difference with Fletch and Mallory. Mallory finds the hole and explodes through it. Fletch chops his legs too much and misses the holes too often.
That's why all of his big runs in the playoff were heads of steam on the stretch zone out of pistol.

We've still only run it once or twice this year.

Hope they're just saving it for when we need it like we did last year

Lol… I like Pringle and hopes he sticks around. But this dude is not that significantly better off of 8 catches because he busted a long one or two, nor are the others liabilities

Do you have a ******* clue about what you are talking about? Ever?
Yes he is significantly better. Of course you're the type of idiot to think everything we see every game day is irrelevant I guess. Oh yeah all the other liabilities... lmao. Yall just make **** up.
Tell me where Lyle is proven to have been better. You don't know what you're seeing and its obvious.

Pringle:
85 carries, 461 yds, 5.4 y/a, 5 tds, 0 fum, 3.38 yds after contact/a, 14 forced miss tackles, 9 10+yd runs, 20 1st downs (23.5%)
8 catches on 9 targets, 96 yds, 12 y/rec, 1 td, 67.4% route%, 1.50 Y/RouteRun, 0 drops, 4 forced miss tackles, 6 1st downs (66.6% of targets), 148.1 Qb rating when targeted

vs

Lyle:
103 carries, 566 yds, 5.5 y/a, 5 tds, 1 fum, 3.52 yds after contact/a, 24 forced miss tackles, 13 10+yd runs, 25 1st downs (24.2%)
10 catches on 12 targets, 57 yds, 5.7 y/rec, 0 td, 71.2% route%, 0.68 Y/RouteRun, 1 drop, 1 forced miss tackle, 1 1st down (10% of targets), 86.5 Qb rating when targeted.

hmmmm. Oh and lets ignore 85% of Lyles stats were from his Frosh year in 2024 lmao.

But sure you can't say Pringle isn't signficantly better - especially as a receiving threat LIke I said lmao. Get out of here...

Was going to mention that in the post but he reads those a lot better then just A gap runs. Not sure why we haven't been going there, maybe they feel we can just run on whoever without needing it but would like to see that incorporated.

Not just this yr, in 2024 we didn't run pistol until final like 3 games of season.

It makes no ******* sense.
I've been a broken record for >2yrs now about the lack of use of pistol specifically FOR Fletcher. obviously I'm not saying we have to be utilizing it for pringle or even Lyle. But Mallory and Fletcher? ....

And with the overal RB rotation not making sense like 3 yrs in a row now. They just force weird ****. They were forcing Lyle in 24 in times it wasn't making sense. They were just straight up ******* weird in how they tried to force Lyle early in 2025 before injury and then late with how they treated pringle. And now they just straight up make zero sense how they use Pringle and then in 2nd OT forcing Lyle again. No other explanation than they just Love Lyle and he will always get preferential treatment imo.... Dude simple hasn't earned any of this **** yet, it's crazy. I have no problem with him getting carries (especially when Fletcher was too hurt), but the snaps he gets over Pringle are crazy. And when he's used is just dumb.

You keep saying that as if I've ever said he should start over Fletcher since playoffs began last yr.

Lyle has yet to prove a single thing. Idk if you've noticed but everyone was *****ing and moaning about Mensah not taking dump off passes to our RB - who btw went on routes like 85% of pass plays! (So much for needing such excellent pass blocking!)... Do you think Pringle is perfect for that or no? This **** is simple and people try to complicate it. Pringle is significantly more proven than Lyle and it's not close. Mallory has earned the RB2 role. But we need to put Pringle in more. But I'm not surprised we don't staff plays favorites constantly. That's why no LBs ever get any burn when we know how large of liability these 2 are in coverage and our coverage has struggled mightily.
I'm not downplaying Pringle's talent or saying he sucks. I'm just sick and tired of you and @ShadowSpring glazing the **** out of him when there are 2 rbs (3 if you include Brown) better than him. There's only so many touches/plays to go around. Don't act like you haven't been glazing him for months now.

Tell me where Lyle is proven to have been better.

Didn't say he was…Don't put words in my mouth you half a f aggot

Also, other backs on this team besides Lyle.

Next. Run and play, junior

I've been a broken record for >2yrs now

Its gotta be a "save it for when we need it" kind of thing. Much like a lot of the stuff we used on the last scoring drive in regulation and the 2pt conversion play.

Last year we ran trickery early to blow teams out because we needed the style points after dropping 2 games. Now its just win and keep stuff hidden until we need it. Caveat that with the fact that we dropped 2 games because we refused to do anything different and didn't use our full ****nal when we needed to and could have easily done.

I'm to the point I think it makes more sense to just go in the bag for a playcall and dagger teams early. We needed the dagger against Wake in the 3rd quarter to put us up 38-7 and we didn't do it. Could have avoided a ton of injuries just riding Luke Nickel and the 2's the rest of the way.

We went 3 and out after FSU turning over on downs both times. Take the momentum and then kill it right away. Literally would have ended them if they turned it over on downs (just like they did against Louisville) and we just shredded them for a full drive with trickery and bag plays and went up 14-0. Instead, let them back in it 7-7 and then let them tie it at 14-14 again instead of 21-7.

I also like to look at 20+ yard runs.

In 2025, we averaged 0.6 such runs per game. We only had 9 runs of 20+ yards in 15 FBS games.

In 2026, we have 6 already, in 5 games. 1.2 per game. Literally double.

We're not quite to that 2024 level, though. We had 21 in 12 games (1.75 per game). But we're trending where we need to be. The really good teams rip off close to 2 of these runs every single game.

When you have Mensah and Mali and this passing game, if you can rip off 20+ yard runs a couple times a week, you're borderline impossible to stop.

By the way, Javian Mallory is now at 6.07 yards per carry against FBS teams. I'm not envious of anyone who has to determine playing time for this backfield, we know what Fletcher is and how good he is in pass pro, and now you've got Mallory emerging as one of the best players on the team and Lyle looked like he was running really hard Saturday night. Even losing Marty and not even really deploying Pringle, this still looks like a very formidable RB group.

IMO we still have a lot to get to in the running game as well. Virtually no pistol yet to this point, and obviously we know that's in the playbook. Very little 2 back sets where we run wide. I wouldn't hate seeing 11 personnel, but put Lofton in the backfield in split backs and run wide zone with him leading the way. Can also get him into the flats and vertical. There's still so much Dawson can do that we haven't shown yet because of our versatility.
To be fair, 4 of these runs came against Florida A&M. I do think the running game has improved, but we should be throwing out the stats from that game to make sure the picture is clear.

Stupidest comparison possible.
We had the easiest opening stretch we've had in years.
We have a far superior QB and WRs and pass game this yr so OF COURSE the run game is opening more
Our Run game last yr before Pringle and then playoffs was ******* absolute dog**** cause we literally did nothing but run up the middle.
Anyone that believe our Run blocking purely from our OLine this yr is superior to last season is full of ****.
Smfh

Rb1 - Fletcher
Rb2 - Mallory

RB3a - Pringle (needs significantly more reps in pass situations, every other RB is a liability in this department)
Rb3b - Lyle

Rb5 - CWH

Anyone saying different is funny.
For what it is worth, we absolutely do NOT have superior receivers in any sense of the word. I would take last year's group back in a heartbeat.

2025 (on October 19th)

Rushing Yards Per Game-
86th (133.6 Yards)

Rushing Yards Per Carry- 93rd (3.8 YPC)

2026

Rushing Yards Per Game-
34th (185.8 yards)

Rushing Yards Per Carry- 19th (5.2 YPC)

The schedule has something to do with it, but I think the improvement in the run game is real. The OL is getting better, TE blocking has improved from last year and the Fletcher/Mallory combo is rolling.

I'm not an OL guru, but I also suspect we've been running more zone schemes and incorporating a LOT of pullers (guards, TEs).

Last year it seemed we were running a ton of A gap duo and then also using the WRs extensively (after bringing them in motion to the LOS) in the run game as key blockers. Don't see that as much this year.

They learned the hard way last year. Hope it doesn’t happen that way again

I’m with you. If we can go up a couple of scores we also put our Defense in much better situations. I’m hopefully injecting Mallory earlier in games can help break the running game open more. Not sure why we haven’t seen some wheel routes or easy throws to the flats with Pringle. Mensah also has to shoulder some blame especially last game. He had several plays he missed guys wide open like when we were backed up at our 2. It was just bad complementary football all around.

Its a combination of the schedule and having a passing attack that teams genuinely fear. Last year teams were willing to stack the box and dare Beck to beat them. Not the case with Mensah and rightfully so, add that we have Barkate plus a year older Mali it gives defenses more to think about

I also didn't like all the smiling Mensah was doing on the sidelines when we were down! I am all for calm and cool, but let's be honest he was very lucky two times when he should have been picked off, and one would have been a pick 6
I sit in the end zone he was throwing away from and I fully anticipated FSU running back my way with the ball.

That would’ve been awful. We got lucky there.
