It’s basically working with Mario on staff and recruiting and he will be another voice in the room. These days job titles mean very little the substance matters.

You might have a misunderstanding of this "another voice in the room" thing, based on the old video of the Golden staff arguing over what makes a safety recruit.

Alonzo is going to oversee a PROFESSIONAL approach to assembling video and cut-ups of all of the recruits, as well as doing a modern-version of the multi-year tracking of recruits that Butch-and-Pete pioneered. Alonzo will supervise a staff of people who will be bringing the intel to Mario and the assistants, allowing the "on-field staff" to focus on other aspects of their jobs, instead of splitting their time in the video room and/or on the recruiting websites.

It is not so much "Alonzo debates other coaches", as much as it will be "Alonzo going out and finding the video and the individual recruits with the attributes that the coaches are looking for". That way, you don't "recruit" 1,000 kids, you focus on 100 or 200 that are the right fit for what you want to put onto the field. You track all of the stuff that they are doing for their own development, from the high schools and camps they attend to the 7-on-7 events that they do, and you assemble a complete picture of both the tangible and intangible attributes. In this regard, the job of a pro scouting organization and a college scouting organization are similar.

But, yes, Alonzo will need to supplement his past experience with a newer emphasis on projecting the growth and physical development of these recruits, in order to forecast position changes and/or growth spurts.

So he is basically in charge of creating NFL level/style scouting department and modifying that system to fit a college operation...

"As general manager of football operations, Highsmith willwork directly with Cristobal to support all administrative functions of the football program, including budget related items, culture building, program imaging, and working directly with staff members both on and off the field. He will also serve as a liaison between the administration and football program, serve as a liaison between former Miami players and staff, assist with scouting and roster assessment and supervise NFL relations."

I wouldn't overthink this. Sometimes a duck is a duck.

Manny was fired after 2-4 (and allowed to coach out the season). Mario had already expressed interest in taking the job. Beta Blake had already **** the bed multiple times on the "what if I gave you a blank check" question. The wheels were already in motion, even if a precise timeline and procedure was not yet established.

That is all. I'm not sure of the motivation for people saying that "Kirk Herbstreit" and "4th and 14" were the determinants of UM's fate. I've tried to hint at this soooo many times previously, but there was a lot of pent-up frustration and there were a lot of moving parts that had already started to move. Kirk Herbstreit and 4th-and-14 were only the parts of the iceberg that were visible to the average viewer.

Remember, Manny's dad simply begged for Manny to be allowed to coach until the end of the year. He never got him a "well, if we win the next 6 or 7 or 8 games, we'll reconsider" guarantee. So all the hypothetical "if Manny wins out, will Miami be too sportswriter-shamed to fire him" stuff can just get tossed in the bin.

No big deal, all's well that ends well.

Manny was 100% gone after the the first several games, before FSU. Yet people keep spouting this narrative so they can either suck off 4-14/FSU or Herbie.

I’m not an insider and I never claimed to be nor do I front like that, but I’m around some of the big decision makers from time to time, they were so freaking unhappy after Michigan state I knew that Manny was done then. Here’s a picture from early November, before the FSU game, where I overheard a conversation, with Frank and someone who I know so I won’t mention their name so I blacked him out but it was funny because Frenk kept covering his mouth but I could hear what he was saying

Fantastic photo, sir. Glad you provided the context, because it certainly looks like Frenk is digging for gold...

As alums, we get our info and intel from a variety of people, very few of whom ever become "sources" for the paid sportswriters. Doesn't mean that the info is wrong, and it is quite often more accurate than what makes it into the press.

I've been tough on Frenkie, but between COVID and what he's done with the Athletic Department generally and Football specifically, I think he knew he had to do something pretty dramatic to get a new 5-year contract. Whatever the rationale, I'm happy he finally and belatedly did something. Maybe he was inspired by the late/great Dr. Martin Luther King...

Thank u. I'm just glad there's clarity for u guys now. He's been on staff since before Mario technically. Just in a different capacity. Now he can get his normal job goin and build this train up.

Iyho, do u think w/ Zo being in this capacity can lead to a smooth transition to a future AD role once Rad hang it up?

Wow we certainly have the dream staff. A lot of fancy titles, two sided business cards, hall of farmers ,former head coaches and consultants. Mediocrity seems to be a thing of the past. The intensity on the field should be fever pitched.

He was very involved in the genesis of this whole thing, without his buy-in it would obviously have been extremely difficult if not impossible, and I’ve been critical of him as well, but he realized that it finally reached a crisis point-of-no-return in the fall, and that he needed people around him that knew what they were doing.

I mean it’s really a simple as that.

He/they put together a transition team that reported to him, and stepped back and let them work they came up with recommendations - well you know the whole story.

And just to be clear, the seeds of this were already well germinating before the football season started. I it’s just that the fire started to burn much hotter during the season.

There’s more as we all know but that’s enough for now.

Bottom line, why I kept saying all fall, and I had some pretty big arguments with people on here about this, that Manny was gone. He was always going to be gone.

Your last paragraph is straight truth. I wish more people would just accept that and deal with that.

There's some things that you can't just say out loud, for contractual reasons. Manny leaving is one of them. Mario coming back to UM is another one.

Aye… y’all remember just a short time ago, when we thought Manny was the king of the off season? Mario don snatched that **** from him too….🤣
