This doesn't have to be so difficult.
70-year old (next year) Butch Davis or a 60-year old Pagano, who's relegated back to defensive coordinator through the NFL old boys network, as Indy ran him off as head coach—a guy that's spent one year in the college game (2007, with Butch at UNC) since leaving Miami in 2000. THIS is who you want to turn the keys over to as the future of the program. Got it.
All that said, if there was a realistic way for Alonzo Highsmith to be considered for AD—it's worth the conversation—but never gonna happen.
As frustrated as fans are with James over football, his efforts behind the scenes to fundraise and upgrade facilities has him in good graces all around. He's not going anywhere anytime soon. There's more to the role of "athletic director" than hiring football coaches—and Highsmith knows nothing about any of that.
