There's no question college football is the most popular sport in college athletics, followed by basketball and then baseball coming in at a distant third. All other sports are non-revenue sports and can't be compared to these three sports in college. I started wondering where Miami, Florida and Florida State are ranked all-time in the three sports and who would come out on top.
College Football
There are a bunch of all-time rankings out there and the results are mixed, so I went to the College Football Warehouse. They seem to have put together a simple formula to come up with an up-to-date ranking for the football programs. The three Florida teams are all ranked as follows:
College Football Warehouse All-Time Rankings
No. 12 Florida Gators
No. 14 Miami Hurricanes
No. 18 Florida State Seminoles
The thing that put the Gators ahead of the Canes and Noles is their strength of schedule points. Which might suggest there may be a tad bit of SEC bias creeping in here as well but that's hard to avoid.
College Basketball
ESPN put out a list of the Top 50 list in 2012, and the site http://fansided.com/2014/10/21/75-greatest-college-basketball-programs-time-statistically-ranked/4/ recently. The only team of the three Florida schools to be listed is Florida. The Gators came in at No. 40 in the ESPN rankings and No. 43 in the Fansided rankings. The Seminoles would have to come in second with the 1972 NCAA runner-up finish and 14 NCAA appearances. The Canes have a ways to go to catch up here.
College Baseball
An all-time ranking for college baseball is a bit hard to find, especially one that goes beyond the Top 10, but no matter where you look, Miami is the winner here hands down. The Canes are the only one of the three to win the College World Series and they also have the most players in the Major Leagues. Florida State isn't far behind and usually right around the No. 10 ranking. The only thing holding them back is the fact that they have never won the College World Series, despite making it to the World Series over 20 times (ouch). Miami was also responsible for keeping them winless by beating the Noles in the final round of the 1999 World Series. Florida has only recently been making some noise but they have nowhere near the Canes' and Noles' success.
So In college football, Florida leads the rankings, even though Miami has the most championships. In basketball, it's Florida all the way. In baseball, Miami is king with the Noles always being held back at the last round.
As far as national championships in the big three sports go, Miami is far ahead of the other two with nine championships. Florida has five titles and Florida State has three. Despite all the noise the Gators and Noles have been making in the last couple of decades, they still have a long ways to go before they can catch up to the Miami Hurricanes.
And just in case you were wondering, Miami wipes the tennis court with the Gators and Noles as well!
