It’s a Miami thing. Jimmy Johnson famously made safeties into linebackers and linebackers into defensive ends. It’s a philosophy that’s usually worked for the program during championship seasons and underachieving seasons alike. Guys like Ray Lewis and Jonathan Vilma played MLB here at around 225lbs .
I get it. Somewhere DCs need to start outsmarting these HUNH RPO spread looks. I truly hope the defense can start catching up. At Bama, some of our defensive schemes have left me shaking my head against the hyper-spread teams. In the Ole Miss game, we were determined to play a lot of man to man and ran, I think, too many disguises and looks and shifts against a Kiffin offense that was simply determined to go fast and find space. You put the wrong scheme out there and you might as well be asking your guys to dig ditches with spoons. The next week Arkansas, with half our talent, and using even a couple of walk-ons on D shut down the rebels with a simple 3-8 zone look. They were jumping routes and simply keeping all the action in front of them. They picked Corral off 6 times and 2 for pick-sixes in their win. Simple offense met a simple defense and it was beautiful.
