Al Golden

He may have been able to recruit at the top end but boy oh boy was he the king of filling the bottom half of the class with useless bodies at positions of need: James King, Terrance Henley, Bar Milo, Hayden Mahoney, D'Mauri Jones, Jerome Washington, Jake O'Donnell, Joe Brown, Jahair Jones, Brendan Loftus, Ryan Fines, Jelani Hamilton, Ryan Mayes, and countless others.

To Richt/Manny's credit they seem to bring in much fewer guys who just don't contribute whatsoever over the course of 4 years.
Some of those guys were 4 stars.. they just didn’t pan out.. happens everywhere

Naw bro; he’s no troll. I did a whole break down on our best seasons under Richt, and the % that was composed of Golden signed/recruited players, and each time a Golden signed/recruited player moved on & was replaced by a Richt signed/recruited player, we continually became worst.

The whole thought process was, wait til Richt gets his players, and the results have been utterly disappointing.

The guy couldn’t outcoach his way out of a paper bag but he could evaluate and recruit. Duke Johnson, Gus Edwards, Rayshawn Jenkins, Hurns, Herndon. These are all guys who are NFL players. There are plenty more. I dont see the playmakers on this team.
He targeted and recruited way better then these bums but he tried to fit square pegs into a circle.

Definitely agree. He can spot talent. Just sucked at coaching and loved cheeseburgers and doritos too much.

Golden's best recruits were NFL talents but it was painful to hear them evaluating 2-star DBs that former Cane greats felt belonged at a D II school. One of the poster's above is spot on that the bottom of Golden's classes were weak (loaded with players that simply weren't Miami caliber).

Nonetheless, Golden likely could have succeeded at Miami if he wasn't so darn stubborn about having NoD as the DC. Loyalty is commendable but flushing his career as a HC down the toilet was a seriously bad error.

Manny wouldn’t know talent if it smacked him the face. You think you are frustrated now. Just wait till you see Rousseau in the league and then think to your self. “How the **** did we only get six games out of this guy.”?

Look at Richt's classes at the bottom of his rosters. It was worse.

Golden did something amazing. He had a losing season and still put the 2nd most players in the NFL after Bama that year. Original post is correct, good evaluator, decent recruiter, decent talent developer, horrible winner.
But come on, he had the cloud of Nevin Shapiro all those years. What was he supposed to do?
😜

**** you mugs just can't give a guy anything :ROFLMAO:. Look I'd rather swim in a sewer than have Al Golden be here but it's not like the dude didn't have any good qualities. He did some good recruiting and he did care for his players.

Honestly he evaluated pretty well in a lot of areas. Right now I feel we have a lot of athletes but also a lot of guys who can't get it in the film room. Just don't have that football IQ.

But the UNC game was on the coaches, they didn't adjust and they recruited the guys who were out there, period. If we have Shaq out there it's a much different game but Diaz and Baker are responsible for who we are trotting out there and they failed in evaluating and recruiting. Edit to add, and of course their high school scheme they trotted out there.

You know we're hurting bad when we are talking about any success of Golden showers compared to the Manny.

Duke wasn't an evaluation. He was obvious. Same with Flowers, Bush, Howard. Credit for signing them though. Jenkins was a Dorito eval. Credit given. Edwards, meh. Did nothing at UM and had to leave to get burn. No credit. Hurns and Herndon, good evals.

If you're looking at evals, however, you have to remember Golden signed >125 kids, so you can't say he was good at evals based on a handful.

What about Larry Hope, Vernon Davis, Nate Dortch, R. Mayes, Knowles, K. Hester, M. Gayot at DB?

What about Brandon Loftus, Bar Milo, Jahair Jones, Hayden Mahoney, Gall, Knighton at OL?

What about Jalen Grimble, Dequan Ivery, Briscoe, E. Moore, J. Brown, R. Fines on DL?

What about Jerome Washington and J. O'Donnell at TE?

Danny Dillard at FB? D'Mauri Jones, Jontaveous Carter at WR?

?

Duke Johnson was not a product of elite evaluation. He was a universally confirmed 5 star recruit.

Oh, but maybe you are saying Al Golden was good at convincing elite RBs to stay home. Like, Dalvin Cook.

The 2 star safety was Colby Reeder who was recruited at safety but would have played linebacker for us. A reach?.. Maybe. But a laughing matter? His dad was an NFL running back. His older brother played at Penn State, transferred to Delaware, and now plays linebacker for the Rams. Colby was Mr. Delaware coming out of high school and would have been a good guy to have on our team compared to all the busts we have had in the last 15 years.

ok what did he hit on? 2 or 3 players a class and the rest was worse than dog ****. We had negative depth all the time and zero development.

Our fans have extremely short term memory. D’Eriq king is only prolonging the inevitable.

This is Al Golden's legacy. Enuff said.
