Al Golden and Co. 2-Star evaluations...

The difference between other schools who are at the top of the recruiting rankings every year and never live up to expectation and AG is that with UM it isn't about the rankings but what they actually see. Larry Coker is one coach I honestly believe focused more on what he saw on recruiting sites and on tv instead of the local talent and the crazy potential from the underrated players and also the overlooked talent across the nation. Sure AG may not be everywhere with the top 20 recruits in the nation but he will alway get some of the most elite talent and with a great coaching staff that buys into what he's selling UM will continue to turn that talent into stars

Love him torpedoing the guy in the white polo AND talkin **** to Rex.

Funny you post these. Remember when we played UF in 08 up in Gainesville? We got pummeled, but I distinctly remember Bosher makin a couple nice open field tackles on Brandon James and lettin him know about it too. Definitely one of the more athletic kickers in the league

Coker was absolutely a list guy! Anyone who let's unemployable mailmen jock sniffers make their recruiting evaluations is going to have trouble.

No way a Temple guy can make it at a big time program like Miami. Only a guy like Shannon can.

What was Wilkerson of the Jets rated when The Don nabbed him at Temple? Next time any of you clowns feel like you're better at evaluating/developing DTs or feel like a 1st or 2nd year DT at UM is a bust or a JAG because he's not playing, go pop in a tape of the Jets Monday night game from last week against the Falcons. Wilkerson was KILLING people in that game.

No doubt. I tend to look at players that we take over more popular players as well. Scott was a big one. Rayshawn Jenkins was as well. People dogged those commits and I'm not talking about the drooling ****** clan, I'm talking "respected" recruiting guys.

How can Miami take Scott and Jenkins when there are so many just like them in Florida that are better?

Olsen Pierre handpicked. Gunter taken over 10,000 Florida DBs.

Sometimes you get lucky and scoop up a gem like Armbrister, and sometimes you compare players side by side and make the right calls, rankings be damned. Seems we can do both.

Highly rated 3 star 5.7. Close to 4.

olsen was a 4 star and number 2 prep de/Dt in country. Gunter was a high rated 3 star on 247.

I got away from the 2 star argument, though both were considered 2 stars by at least one recruiting service. All I'm saying is their offer sheets speak for themselves, especially Gunter.

247 has interesting rankings. Do they adjust them after the fact? Just curious because I'm 45 minutes away from Montgomery, and I don't remember hearing anything about Gunter at all. I'm fairly certain he wasn't ranked in any local montgomery rankings. I know he didn't make the Alabama all star team. I do remember a kid from JD that got some attention around that time although I can't remember his name. I do know, though, that it wasn't Gunter. I just find it kind of odd that a kid that isn't even ranked locally can be considered a 3 star nationally. Doesn't make much sense to me. How many 3 stars do they have?

No. Everything's finalized by the time these kids sign their NLI. Gunter came out of Juco and was a high rated 3 star out of there(fort Scott c.c.)

Its hard for any site to find and rank everyone. Look at the 6'7" WR kid from Texas , he just got ranked right before A&M and FSU offered. I really want him btw to along with Langham 6-5, Brady 6-3. Lane 6-3, Griffin 6-6 or 6-7, Devante Peete 6-5 and BB 6-2.

Going back to Al's first year, Armbrister was a 0 star guy that is probably playing better than a lot of 4-5 star LBs from 2011 right now.

That's been historical Miami recruiting. Did Russ Maryland, Cortez Kennedy, Geno Torretta, etc. have any stars? I don't think they did. Neither did Leon Searcy. Heck, I couldn't even find him on any of the recruiting lists. (That was the era of newsletters, before the internets--all of them).

Some kids emerge after spending some time at Juco, like Cortez Kennedy, Richard Newbill, Jeremy Shockey, Geoff Torretta, others. It's a whole new ball game after a year or two at Juco. Heck, we even had a starting OL in the '80's on one of our NC teams, Scott Provin, who didn't even play HS ball as I remember. Leon Searcy was a perennial all-pro, I think (although I didn't follow his pro career that much) but he was on no lists I could find for HS in Orlando. Bubba Franks was a sleeper. Where were Jimmy Graham and Jeremy Shockey on national lists. Ray Lewis was no a big name five star, I think he was just another good player in the state of Florida.

Sally Jenkins, who I consider one of the best sportswriters in the country (she used to cover the Canes extensively for the Washington Post in the '80's) used to tell me how Jimmy Johnson had the uncanny ability to look at a recruits' parents and tell what kind of football player he would be. He could also just look at his legs and feet. It was unbelievable. Nobody knew anything about Greg Mark, but when JJ saw him jump center for a HS basketball team, where he was the only white starter, convinced JJ that the kid was a special athlete. And he was. Pound-for-pound, one of the best ever to play for the U, a program with a lot of great players over the years. JJ used to say if he could one guy with him into a dark alley it would be Mark.

I don't believe it, Not for one minute. He might have been less than an outstanding recruiter, but I give him and his staff much more credit than that. I remember some of the guys he tried to recruit. He was fighting all the big programs for the most coveted recruits in the country, he just got beat. I don't think he ignored south Florida. He spent all day at Joe Cohen's house, only to lose him to UF. Cohen was not that great anyway. Good, but not great.

Oh ok. I thought you meant coming out of high school. With regards to JUCO rankings, from what I've noticed over the years, a 3 star is equivalent to a 2 star out of high school imo. JUCO rankings always seem to be inflated to me. For example, a high 3 star out of high school would have more offers than Indiana and North Texas.
