Akheem Mesidor had his turn at the podium during ACC Media Days, stepping up as a veteran on a talented Miami Hurricanes defensive line group. Reflecting on last season’s struggles and the team’s offseason focus, Mesidor made one thing clear. It all starts with communication.

When asked what the Hurricanes need to improve on defensively, Mesidor didn’t hesitate:

“The biggest thing we've been emphasizing this offseason is communication. If you don't communicate, your defense is going to...

watched them not know how to communicate all year last year, we need alphas and hopefully our DC will change this but he needs to do this with certain leaders. it has to be established at every position - dline - lb - db

again this goes to having set captains and not rotating like the YMCA every game

I think that the lack of communication aspect of the defense last season had to do with Guidry's overly complicated scheme which became even more complex once the offense utilized motion. We saw it in every game last year. Once anyone went in motion, the defense, particularly the secondary had absolutely no clue what to do and it turned into a slapstick comedy routine consisting of widespread confusion and finger pointing.

I certainly don't think that the lack of communication was necessarily inherent to to our players. Instead in addition to an overly complex scheme what we witnessed was the result of poor coaching at every level of the defense. This is why I was so excited about the Hetherman hire. He is known as an excellent teacher as is every assistant coach we hired on defense. The new scheme is much simpler yet aggressive and has been shown to be very effective. Yet Hetherman didn't stress his scheme at first. He stressed mastering the fundamentals and communication as without those, scheme is meaningless. It also helps tremendously that we upgraded the entire secondary and added a proven LB in Mo Toure.

Dude is 24 years old. There’s a reason why he’s not in NFL. Why bother to recruiting Lightfoot and Lowe if you gonna keep starting 6th year seniors
Plenty of snaps to go around. Mesidor can play multiple positions. Lightfoot gonna get lots of burn too, he’s not big enough to play every down. Let him eat on passing situations like Garvin did in 17. We need them all.

Because you don't just play the two starters - several guys will be in the rotation. And injuries happen. Having Mesidor back is a good thing.

Multiple positions? Didn’t CIS got into an uproar because he was played out of position last year. One of the most massive problems with Miami over the span of 20 years is playing upperclassman based on seniority and not productivity. Was Akheem the first year he got here……yes and we haven’t seen it since

Right now he’s the healthiest he’s been since his first year here. I mean buddy had 5.5 sacks last year after missing all spring and almost all fall due to foot. Definitely someone we should be excited about.

So you want to put 5.5 sacks and 9 TFLs on the bench 🤦🏾‍♂️

I want the best players playing……period, we have two 5 star DEs that gonna dry rot on a bench for a player that’s gonna be projected no higher than an undrafted free agent
Of those 5 stars only Lightfoot plays the same position as Mesidor, and he will play a lot. He needed that shirt, the kid arrived to campus weight 212, there is no way he was ready last season.
